I’m an illusionist, not a psychic.Going on TV is supposed to advance my career, but things go wrong.Like vampires and zombies kind of wrong. My name is Sasha Urban, and this is how I learned what I am.
Audiobook wonderfully narrated by Emily Durante. Normally I’m partial to male narrators but this story was so interesting and the reader was exceptionally good, I fell into it with very little resistance. We have one Sasha Urban a lady illusionist finally getting her big break on television, when all kinds of hell break loose! We are talking about vampires and zombies and a revelation, Oh my! That all of this shakes down on this woman’s special day is horrible. But it’s something about her that makes this come about. The synopsis for this book is intentionally vague and I asked you to treat your self by discovering this fascinating world!

The woman who recommended The Girl Who Sees told me it was a slow start but to stick with it – I’m glad I did. As well as fantastic world-building, Zales offers an intriguing look into how to effect illusions and magic tricks. My catnip is a book where I can learn something new through the eyes of a character and this delivered.

Sasha is an illusionist and her dream is to quit her job at a hedge fund and have a career on tv. When she gets the chance to appear on a show she thinks that her only problem will be her fear of public speaking! But when she starts seeing the future and is attacked by what appears to be dead people, and all that during a live show, she begins to realise that her life will never be the same again and that nothing, and no one, in her life is what it appears to be. The Girl Who Sees is the first book I read by Dima Zales and I loved it, I read it in one sitting! I loved the characters, Sasha is so funny and adorable and I loved the fact that she dealt with difficult situations with bravery and humour. And she has her friends and roommates to rely on, Ariel and Felix, who are wonderful but also have secrets of their own! There’s also Nero, her mysterious and demanding boss, who she can’t help feeling attracted to! This is the first book in a trilogy and there’s a new and exciting world for the reader to explore! New York has a secret world that few people can see! I can’t wait for the next books!

4 STARS to The Girl Who Sees!
An exciting new Urban Fantasy Series, with Seers and Vampires and Necromancers, oh my!
Meet Sasha Urban. By day she’s a Hedge Fund Analyst, by night she’s an Illusionist.
This girl does not play tricks and don’t tell her she does either!
Sasha is looking at honing in on her special effects to leave her boring day job and pursue her passion of making magic. For Sasha, her abilities are an effect, she has yet to discover (or understand?) how innate her skills actually are. She wants to be the first famous female Illusionist and join the ranks of other famous magicians like Harry Houdini and my all time fav Criss Angel!
Sash gets her big lucky break when she’s invited on a live talk show to demonstrate her abilities. But something goes wrong, or quite likely right, that puts Sasha on a path to discovering who she really is.
Sasha’s history is shrouded in mystery. She has adoptive parents but no recollection of her biological mom and dad. What else is mysterious is the course of events that keep putting her in danger. Let’s just say that after her shocking revelation during her live TV spiel, life takes a turn for the worse, or better yet, her life is in danger and all Sasha can do is react to the course of events that could end her life!
This is an action pact story full of twists and turns where Sasha discovers that a supernatural world exists and she’s a part of that world. The urgency of this story is in the non-stop action that takes place over the course of a few days.
The Girl Who Sees is a fun read that promises to take you into the world(s) of the supernatural. I really enjoyed Sasha’s character. She’s upbeat, determined, and on the verge of life changing events. As the story unfolds you learn snippets of Sasha’s life, her friendships, her mysterious boss and the newbie interlopers that attempt to take her down a course of events that will forever change her. Book One ends on an exciting note and I was really disappointed that there wasn’t more. On another note, the pop culture references were awesome! If you like the realities of our world infused in your fantasy, you will not be disappointed. This part of the author’s writing is fantastic!
Now that Sasha is thrust into her new state of existence I’m hoping the author will take some time to have Sasha be a bit more reflective. While book one was full of action, Sasha had no time to breathe and really contemplate her situation. She just simply reacted from one tumultuous event to the next. Between being chased down by zombie-like creatures for most of the book and meeting the council, you don’t get a strong read on Sasha’s relationships with her roommates and others. – Sasha isn’t even terrified by the dead bodies that keep coming after her. I was hoping for a bit more angst in this regard. Now that doors have closed for Sasha and others have opened, I’m hoping there will be some time for Sasha to explore the mystery that is her life!
This is my very first time reading a book by Dima Zales. While I’m not new to Urban Fantasy books, the author’s writing style is new to me. I’m looking forward to reading how he builds this world. The biggest intrigue being the mystery of Nero and what he wants from Sasha. Will this become a love interest or a potential enemy? This inquiring mind wants to know!
I was kindly provided an ARC for an honest review. All opinions shared here are my own.
Completely looking forward to see what happens to Sasha in Misfortune Teller. CAN’T WAIT!

Surprisingly good and enthralling. From the title I was groaning and thinking YA. But not so much, really good Urban Fiction. The alien twist is a little cringey. But the magician stuff is cool. The world is unique. The players are a mixture of cool and fail but overall would recommend and would read the next one. In fact, I’d look forward to the next one.

Very beautiful and captivating YA Fantasy Book !

A very good surprise for this YA fantasy novel with a story full of twists and turns, captivating and enigmatic characters : a fabulous mixture of genres (zombies, wizards, werewolves, vampires…).
The main character of Sasha is complex and captivating. You can’t guess her reactions in advance, which makes the novel absolutely addictive.
I couldn’t let go of the novel, I read it in one go.
A series to discover absolutely.

I absolutely loved this book. So much that I had to get the next one and the next one. Sasha is stand down awesome, the fact that she adapts but shows fear is perfect.
I love how stubborn and determined she is even working through her fear.
Honestly this book is a twist on paranormal and I love the world and imagination that comes with it. Honestly it all makes perfect sense and can actually be cruelly believable in this real world or what we think.
I love the play with magic and magic, how much the author had to research is mind blowing but also brings more truth to the magician part of Sasha.
Yes I reccomend this book, just be prepared to buy the test after reading it.

Every time I put down this book to do things in the real world I kept getting pulled back. I just wanted to learn more with Sasha. There’s a lot of crazy stuff happening to her and she doesn’t know what’s going on, but then she gets these visions that drop just enough hints to make you guess what’s going on. The author did a wonderful job with this book. I can’t wait to find out who’s hiding what and what the bigger picture is. I’m pretty sure more surprises await us in book two.
The Girl Who Sees is the first book in the Sasha Urban series.

You can expect zombies, vampires, demons, dragons, and a lot of action, suspense, mystery, danger, humor, romance, and many twists and turns! Never a dull moment in Sasha adventures!
