Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon. Xan rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.
One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge–with dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Deadly birds with uncertain intentions flock nearby. A volcano, quiet for centuries, rumbles just beneath the earth’s surface. And the woman with the Tiger’s heart is on the prowl . . .

I was introduced to this book during a long term substitute teaching assignment with a 5th grade class. It was near the end of the school year and the book was recommended (and loaned) to me by another 5th grade teacher. Most of the year’s work and testing were complete. So, I wanted something productive we could do during the last couple of weeks. I read the book aloud to the students. The students really enjoyed it and wanted me to read more every time we read. It really held their attention and we had some great discussions. We, as a class, were only able to read about half the book before the end of the school year, However, I really enjoyed the book and wanted to finish the story. So, I purchased my own copy and read it during the summer. The book was a very satisfying read and I’ve recommended it to others a number of times.
I like it but i was a little confused
As I read this book I co had soon figure out why it was given an award. The magic and mystery of it all is amazing and it you are into that sort of thing then this book is a must read.
The best book I read all year. Lots of magic. Lots of love. Lots of mistakes despite all that. Beautifully written and inspiringly told.
This is my all time favorite book, I have read it almost three times and it still excites me every time. I love all the characters so much and will always hold their story close to my heart.
The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a wonderful story that kept me turning pages to unravel the story. The changing of point of views throughout the book really kept things interesting. I truly recommend this book to everyone.
I had trouble getting into this book so I would read a bit and set it aside. The characters were so well written that I always come back to it. Glad I did! By halfway I couldn’t put it down.
I did find the chapter titles confusing and distracting so I started skipping them.
A great fantasy book. Will read more by this author.
Fits into the fantasy of Cornelia Funk. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and happily gave it to my ten year old granddaughter.
Fabulous fairy tale, absolutely marvelous
The language of the book is mesmerizing and beautiful.
Was disappointed, provided it got award.
This book was a pure joy to read. I loved the magic, especially when Luna is a child and magic flows out of her everywhere. Enchanting.
Loved it!
its good
The vocabulary is not easy for a child, but the story is very creative and really lets your imagination flow.
Loved it! Couldn’t put it down.
I loved this book!
Wonderful new fairy tale. Perfect to share with all your loved ones.
I loved this book! I can’t wait to read it to the grandkids.
This book reads like a storybook or fairy tale, with each chapter reading like a small story of its own that fits into a larger puzzle. Each chapter title begins with “In Which…such and such takes place” and reads like a miniature story. While it is a continuation of the larger story, it doesn’t feel that way when you’re reading it. I felt drawn into each individual character’s story. I was enchanted.
I loved the story of Luna. She is the baby sacrificed to the Witch in the woods and then saved, enmagicked, and raised by none other than the Witch herself who, it turns out, is quite kind. Luna must be protected, though, from her magic. She is simply too young to know how to handle all of that power. So Xan (the kind old Witch), Glerk (the old swamp monster), and Fyrian (the tiny dragon) raise Luna together in the woods. But one day, another witch comes looking for her…and this one is not so kind.
I loved this story. I would recommend it for anyone who loves stories filled with imagination and magic!
