When Orchid gets adopted by Suzannah and Noel everyone was hoping for the perfect happy family. But things start to go wrong. Little things at first, but then it grows into bigger things. Suzannah tries to tell Noel, but he doesn’t really listen. Then things get worse. What happens? You will have to read the book to find out. A very good mystery/thriller story. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.
Suzannah and Noel are finally getting the child they’ve so desperately wanted, and nine-year-old Orchid calls them Mummy and Daddy from the start. She’s a precocious child who is certainly a bit different than what Suzannah was expecting, and she will admit she’s a bit disappointed she’s especially close to Noel but glad that he’s such a doting father.
Things start to go from odd to drastically weird after Orchid moves in and Noel isn’t much of a sounding board for Suzannah, he thinks Suzannah’s imagination is running wild. Thankfully she has her best friend Lila to talk to about all the odd things that are happening around the house since Orchid moved in. When things start to get dangerous, will she have Noel’s support to figure out what is going on with the house and Orchid?
I don’t want to say too much about the book and spoil anything for other readers. Dounaeva has made the perfect setup for a creepy thriller/mystery and once I started reading, I was hooked, and read this in one sitting. In addition to a fantastically creepy setting, the characters and storyline were wonderful. Such an incredibly fun read!
This author is adept at keeping the reader guessing to what is happening. Good read. I finished the book on Halloween when we had only two sets of visitors because of Covid-19…so it was an apropos choice. Thank you for the entertainment!
Hauntingly good story! I knew there had to be a twist and I wasn’t disappointed when it came.It held my interest all the way. Thanks so much!

The author is clearly a talented writer and knows how to draw you in with the characters. I couldn’t put this book down. I had to know what happened next and it just kept on going, getting more exciting with each chapter. It is easy to relate to the characters and it is easy to imagine you are right there in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a suspenseful, haunting story that keeps you turning the pages and wanting more. VERY WELL DONE!

Really great storyline. Newly adopted orchid seems to b a strange child but her new parents seem to love her without exception. Not everyone feels that way about her however. I was a little slow in getting into it but glad I kept on reading
This is a suspenseful, creepy, psychological thriller about a couple who adopt a nine year old girl named Orchid thinking they would have a perfect family. When weird things start happening around the house I was hooked on this page turning mystery. You definitely need to check out The Girl In The Woods.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s different to my usual reads, nonetheless, it kept me hooked and entertained. The author did a brilliant job of putting together a great story with wonderful characters.

Kept me guessing. Couldn’t wait to finish.
True Koontz form. Surprise ending.
This book was a fast read. It was complex, but not so much so that the reader struggles to keep all the pieces of the puzzle in mind.
It was difficult to put the book down. Scary, with unexpected turns, that became more significant as the book progressed. There were good lessons in the book to be learned once you understood where the horror came from.
I am really on the fence about this book. At times I liked it, but others times i thought “Why Finish”. It was rather slow, repetitive, and wordy.
