For thriller-writer Ella Daniels, the house on the cliff, where she’s moved with her young family, is the perfect place to overcome writer’s block. But there’s a strange atmosphere that settles once they move in – and Ella’s intrigued when she hears stories of brutal murders in the house next door more than 150 years ago. When Ella uncovers a portrait of a beautiful young girl named Violet Hargreaves, who went missing at the same time as the horrific crimes, she becomes determined to find out what happened. And in trying to lay Violet’s ghost to rest, Ella must face ghosts of her own…
This haunting timeslip tale is perfect for fans of Kate Riordan, Tracy Rees, Kate Morton and Lucinda Riley.

This story started a little slow for me, but once the story started to unfold, I had difficulty putting it down and stayed up way too late finishing it. Violet is a wonderful character, though Ella was a bit annoying at times. I loved the mystery around the disappearance of the girl in the picture, and though I would’ve liked a happier ending, I thought the book was clever. At times, The Girl in the Picture reminded me of Daughters of the Lake, though this novel left out all the sensational haunting found in Daughters of the Lake. I would recommend this to fans of historical fiction who also like a good mystery.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book. It also kept me guessing. It’s a great read.
Historical Mystery (Note: not a Romance.) I like how this story switched between present day and historical settings. Engaging and interesting.
I have never read this author before, but will definitely read another of hers and hope I’m just as satisfied with the next one as I was with this story. This is a story that goes between 1855 and 2016. I loved the characters from both time periods–they’re well-developed. The story that takes place in 1855 was accurate in its portrayal of the role of woman which, thank God, has changed. Ella is a crime write and when she discovers a mystery set in her home, she’s determined woman to solve a 150 year old mystery and put her writing of mysteries on hold. The ending (or pretty close to the actual ending) is a surprise.
I’ve never read this author before, but after reading this book I want to read more. I don’t usually like books that go back and forth in time, but it didn’t bother me a bit. From the moment I saturated reading it, I was invested in the characters and wanted to know what would happen. The ending was not predictable and I didn’t figure it out until it was happening. For as many mysteries as I read, that’s really saying something and allowed me to give this author five stars. Well done!
G
A wonderful book. Enjoyed it so much. Surprise
ending.
I found the book interesting how it flipped back in forth in time between the two story lines. It was a good story.
Enjoyed
Truly an amazing and unusual plot.
I’m a big fan of books set in more than one time period. I thought this one did it well. Will definitely read this author again.
Great reading. Many characters, but the author was able to keep everything in order and you were able to not loose the trend and story line.
Very decent mystery, honestly, I skimmed a lot trying to get to the end.
Awesome book.
Great read!
Characters were well developed. Haunting reminder of women’s role in history. Enjoyed the book. Would recommend to others. Probably would not read it again.
Brilliant writing–mixing fiction with some facts–could feel the emotion
of the characters in a very realistic way.
U predictable
Well written
Very good mystery. Couldn’t put it down.
