Written with the chilling, twisty suspense of The Wife Between Us and Something in the Water, a seductive debut thriller about greed, lust, secrets, and deadly lies involving identical twin sisters.Twin sisters Iris and Summer are startlingly alike, but beyond what the eye can see lies a darkness that sets them apart. Cynical and insecure, Iris has long been envious of Summer’s seemingly … long been envious of Summer’s seemingly never-ending good fortune, including her perfect husband Adam.
Called to Thailand to help her sister sail the family yacht to the Seychelles, Iris nurtures her own secret hopes for what might happen on the journey. But when she unexpectedly finds herself alone in the middle of the Indian Ocean, everything changes. When she makes it to land, Iris allows herself to be swept up by Adam, who assumes that she is Summer.
Iris recklessly goes along with his mistake. Not only does she finally have the golden life she’s always envied, with her sister gone, she’s one step closer to the hundred-million-dollar inheritance left by her manipulative father. All Iris has to do is be the first of his seven children to produce an heir.
Iris’s “new” life lurches between glamorous dream and paranoid nightmare. On the edge of being exposed, how far will she go to ensure no one discovers the truth?
And just what did happen to Summer on the yacht?
Only Iris knows . . .

I personally think the synopsis for this one gave too much away. Lucky for me, I remembered the basics and not the details before I started reading.
Once I heard about this novel, I couldn’t wait to read it. The theme was right up my alley! A huge inheritance left for only one of a father’s children —the first to produce a child. Two identical twins with very different lives are in the running. Summer, well-off, married, and insisting she’ll only procreate for love, and Iris, struggling and on the verge of a divorce. When the two sisters set sail to bring Summer’s yacht back home after a medical emergency, it looks like it’s a chance for the two sisters to bond. But then Summer admits she’s gotten herself pregnant. And before you can say congratulations, one of them goes overboard…
Though you may think you have all the answers, keep reading. The twists and turns keep coming. Though I thought I had an inkling of what was going on, there were definitely surprises and this one kept me engaged. Well worth the read.
That ending tho…
ris and Summer are identical twin sisters. At least on the outside. Summer has the perfect life while Iris is very insecure and her life is in chaos. When Iris agrees to help Summer sail Summer’s yacht home from Thailand the unthinkable happens when Summer is accidentally hit in the head and falls overboard. Iris searches for a long time to no avail. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll stop now. This book is full of twists and turns and the ending…well you’ll have to read it for yourself. I couldn’t put this book down! I highly recommend it!
I enjoyed this book. I felt for the characters and felt like I was there with them. I was shocked at the end!! A must read and I would recommend this book.
This book started a little slow for me since I was in a small reading slump…but once I picked it up again and got into it I couldn’t put it down. This book has some crazy twists and turns that will make your brain hurt, but in a good way. This is a thriller that the ending was nothing that I guessed. I like it when an author can keep me guessing, but my guesses are wrong. Definitely worth the read.
Thanks to Book Club Girls, Scene of the Crime, William Morrow / Harper Collins and NetGalley for offering me this ARC. This book was a treat to read, full of greed, suspicion, cunning, treachery, deception, and a twisted plot.
Summer and Iris are nearly identical twins, but they are actually mirror images of each other. Summer has always been regarded as sweet and kind, and Iris is an afterthought. Ben is their younger brother, and is studying abroad in NYC.
The family discovers that their cunning father, Ridge, set up a statute in his will that the first of his children to marry and produce an heir would get $100 million. Not only did Ridge have these three children with second wife Annabeth, he also has additional children with his third wife, Francine. Francine is hopeful that her daughters will produce the heir. Annabeth hopes that one of her children will be the one to inherit the Carmichael estate.
Summer is in a perfect marriage to Adam, after his first wife died. They have a son (from the first marriage) who is sick, so Summer begs Iris to help them by sailing their yacht safely back to Australia from Thailand. Iris, who recently broke up with her husband, Noah, agrees. While on the yacht, tragedy strikes. What happens next is a twisted tale of deception.
I wasn’t completely surprised at the ending as I felt it was building to that all along, but I do think it was quite a well-spun tale!

4.5 rounded up to 5 since Goodreads and BookBub won’t let me do half stars.
The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle is OUT OF CONTROL, and I fully mean that in the best way possible. This debut novel has an ending that will blow you away, and I literally had to reread the last two pages about three times because I could NOT wrap my head around what I had just read. You do have to suspend some disbelief, but if you can do that it is so worth it to read this. It would also be helpful to do it as a buddy read since there is no way you can’t discuss the ending. Frankly, I just need a conversation with the author right now!
This was a crazy fast read, and totally bingeable if you are looking for something you can read in one sitting. I was a little lost with the sailing terms, but I ended up not even caring because the end made everything worth it. The Girl in the Mirror is a great one to go into blind (as I feel most books are), so I don’t want to say too much about it. Just know, it is super twisty and will have you racing to the end!
“Other people can’t see the difference, but when I look in the mirror, I don’t see myself. I see Summer.”
Summer and Iris are identical twins – except they are mirror twins. One is right handed, the other left handed. One has their internal organs on the opposite side as the other.
Iris has always been jealous of Summer. Now that they’re grown up, Summer is the one that is married to the perfect husband, has the adorable stepson, and her and her husband bought the family yacht, the BATHSHEBA, that Iris has always loves and covets.
When Summer asks Iris help sailing the yacht from Thailand to the Seychelles, Iris doesn’t refuse. She loves sailing the yacht, even if it isn’t hers.
But she doesn’t foresee the terrible events that happen during that trip with Iris or the way she handles the aftermath.
This was a strange, compelling suspense thriller full of very twisty twists. I would have rated it 4 1/2 stars if I could have but it didn’t quite hit all the right buttons enough to round it up to five stars.
I highly recommend this story if you like thrillers at all.
I received this book from William Morrow Books through Edelweiss in the hopes that I would read it and leave a review.
This is a pulpy thriller featuring rich people behaving badly. It includes exotic locales, beautiful mirror-identical twins, a yacht, a wicked stepmother, and a $100 million inheritance with strings attached. If you’re seeking a break from reality, this a great escape.
Twin sisters Summer and Iris are the main characters who lead readers through exploits around the globe, from Thailand to Australia and beyond. Many members of this far-branching family are involved in the scheming as well. I found myself skimming the nautical terminology in the first part of the novel, but kept going and was glad I did. After reading, I’m pondering the author’s first name and the imagery of roses throughout the story.
Thank you to the Book Club Girl group at William Morris for the gifted copy.
Summer was the first born twin and the most shy. Iris was a surprise a few minutes later. She was not as shy as Summer.
In fact, Iris was always jealous of Summer. Summer seemed to just have everything handed to her and was prettier.
As they grew into adults, they were friends, but Iris was still jealous.
When their father died, his will made things between them a bit tricky because even though they didn’t discuss it, they were or at least Iris was competing to be the first to become pregnant to inherit their father’s hundred million dollar fortune.
Only one child could inherit the money and not share it with any of the other siblings that included the siblings their father had with his two other wives.
We then meet the sisters when Iris has left her husband and Summer needs Iris to help take the family yacht across the ocean.
The two sisters take the yacht together, but what Summer tells Iris while they are on their way will change everything. What happens the next morning is even worse.
Summer was no where to be found, and she hadn’t awakened Iris at midnight as planned.
Where could Summer be? Of course Iris thinks the worst, and knows the worst has happened.
But…has the worst happened?
Iris always wanted to be Summer. Maybe she could be Summer now that she is gone.
The decision was easily made for Iris/Summer when she made it to shore, and the deceit begins.
It was nerve wracking thinking how Iris was going to pull all of this off. She even thought twice about it herself.
Many surprises await the reader as the book continues. Does Iris/Summer get away with what she did?
The girl in the mirror will keep you guessing, and keep you turning the pages.
Those readers who enjoy nautical jargon and journeys on a yacht will also be pulled in. 4/5

This is the first book I have read from this author. This was one of my 2 BOTM picks for October.

What the hell did I just read? We follow twin sisters Iris and Summer who are startlingly alike, but beyond what the eye can see lies a darkness that sets them apart. Iris has been envious of summer for a long time.
This book was a damn good thriller that had me hooked from the start. I felt like I was along for a very cynical ride with lies and secrets. The pacing fit the story well, and was a joy for me to read. I must say the ending to me was mind blowing, and something I seriously didn’t see coming. I definitely recommend this book to thriller readers who want a domestic family thriller full of lies sending you in multiple directions!!!!
OMG! This is a book like no other! When money is concerned why do people have to be so rapacious and rogue?? Someday they will regret what they have done to other people when it comes back to bite them on the *#*! This book is exceptionally well written but the subject disgusts me. Enjoy!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Oh man. I don’t even know where to begin to unpack this book. It’s the ultimate game of clue- winner takes all. In a oddly structured, blended family, the death of the patriarch leaves both sadness, and a bizarre will, behind.
Getting to know the characters in this novel was seriously wonderful. The dynamic storytelling, and the lead-up to the twist is insane. You will seriously not be able to put this one down.
I really enjoyed the themes of self-reflection, and the grass not always being greener on the other side, and things and people not being what they seem throughout this novel. It is so well played, and it is so relatable in terms of relationships.
This is my first Rose Carlyle novel, and I can honestly say it will not be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing. Her characters all had such depth and dimension. She dangled the plot in front of you, like a carrot on a stick, and she keeps the pages turning with her seriously devious, suspenseful, twists. I am so please with my October BOTM selection.
Psychological thriller,The Girl in the Mirror, is Rose Carlyle’s debut novel. Identical twins Iris and Summer’s father had an unusual will where he left his fortune to the child that produces the first Carmichael grandchild. Carmichael had three wives and the twins have a brother and several step sisters.
Summer and Iris take the family yacht from Thailand to the Seychelles. Something horrible happens on the yacht which leaves one of the twins trying to win the inheritance. I liked this debut thriller, but I felt I was on that yacht for a year. After arriving in the Seychelles, the book moved much faster, and I figured out some of the twists I think the author needed to develop the character of Ben, the twin’s brother. The ending wasa bit abrupt. I also feel that the book needed a short epilogue that takes place five or ten years later. I look forward to reading a second novel by this author. Thank you Harper Collins for this ARC. The opinions in this review are my own.
Wow this was certainly a book with a interesting twist. Iris and Summer are twins, not just any twins but mirror image twins. This was my first book by this author and she wrote an amazing book. This type of genre is one of my all time favorites, and look forward to reading more of her books in the future. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that loves this genre of books.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher William Morrow and am under no obligation to leave a favorable review, all opinions expressed here are my own.
What just happened? I so didn’t see this book’s twist coming that I’m pretty sure I have whiplash. And I mean that in a good way.
Let’s start with the plot. Summer and Iris are identical twins who are literally the mirror image of each other – Iris’s left side is the perfect reflection of Summer’s right. All their lives, no one has been able to tell them apart but Iris knows they’re not the same – she sees Summer as the “good” twin, the one everyone loves. “Everywhere she goes, she’s the sun in the morning sky. The first rose of spring. And I’m her shadow, her double, her ultimate accessory.” Iris is jealous of her sister’s life, including her marriage to perfect Adam, but would still do anything for her so when Summer calls asking her twin to fly to Thailand to help sail the family yacht to the Seychelles, Iris agrees. But when Summer mysteriously disappears from the boat one night, everything changes. Adam assumes Iris is Summer and she doesn’t correct his mistake, stepping into the life she always wished was hers with no one the wiser. Can she keep up the deception to get everything she wants or will what seemed like a dream come true become the ultimate nightmare?
Let me tell you, I’ve never been so glad my twin girls are fraternal as when I was reading this book! Despite her flaws, you can’t help but feel for Iris and while the lengths she goes to are extreme, I rooted for her to come out on top, whatever that might end up meaning. @Rose Carlyle keeps the story moving and the twists coming and like I said, the ending totally surprised me. This is a great debut thriller and I’m excited for what she writes next.
Thanks to NetGalley, Harper Collins and the author for an advanced copy to review.
Twin sisters. Identical but not the same.
The Girl in the Mirror is a suspenseful and twisted read! Lies and betrayal? YES! I love a good thriller and this book delivered. The pacing of the story was slow in some places but I was invested in the story so it didn’t bother me too much. These characters were insane! Some of the choices and actions they made, had my head spinning. It made for a great read though! Twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. I reached the ending and I closed the book and just sat there saying to myself, wooooow.
A wonderful debut! I enjoyed her writing style. Her storytelling style kept me engaged. I look forward to what she comes out with next. Miss Carlyle has a new fan! I give this 4 stars.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC ebook. The Girl in the Mirror is a psychological thriller about identical twins, Summer and Iris, a father’s manipulative game involving a one hundred million dollar inheritance, greed and the desperate lengths people will go to in order to secure their financial future. Iris, forever comparing herself to her perfect twin, Summer rushes to Thailand when called agreeing to sail the family’s boat to the Seychelles with brother in law Adam. But when Summer, not Adam leaves with Iris and a tragedy occurs at sea the deception begins. Told from Iris’ perspective The Girl in the Mirror is a satisfying twisty game of cat and mouse that won’t disappoint.
Wow mind blown & it’s been awhile! I’ve always heard the term “mirror image” but never knew it’s a medical term. So this story was very intriguing and the character of Iris is so wickedly evil it was actually entertaining. Mirror image twins Summer and Iris look exactly alike but with opposite features. Iris sees Summer as beautiful & perfect, which makes Iris grudgingly envious! An opportunity arises when Summer asks Iris to sail the family’s yacht from Thailand to Seychelles, but when the yacht arrives only Iris is there. Iris pretends to be Summer, but what did happen to Summer? This is an intense, paranoid, twisty read! Thanks to Harper Collins for an ebook ARC. This is my honest review.
Rose Carlyle’s debut psychological suspense THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR left me gobsmacked. With its exotic setting, incredibly drawn characters, masterfully intricate plot, and an ending I absolutely did not see coming, Carlyle doesn’t just knock the ball out of the park—she sends it flying into the next universe. THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR is a triumph, one of the best books I’ve read all year.
