The Girl in the Love Song is an engrossing, gripping coming of age romance that will touch your heart and give you all the feels. I loved everything about this book and could not put it down as it had me glued to the paged from beginning to end.
This novel will take you on a roller coaster ride and will give you all the feels. It was emotional, angsty, intense and so beautifully written you will be left thinking about it long after you’ve finished reading.
These characters will consume you. Violet and Miller had a once in a lifetime love and they will own your heart. Their relationship from the start was beautiful and I loved their devotion to each other throughout the years, however love is not always easy and these two had quite a journey ahead of them. Additionally Emma Scott gave us a cast of secondary characters who were all so compelling you will not stop thinking about them.
The story will have you riveted and as each chapter unfolds and we get more involved in the story you will be amazed at the extent to which this novel was so much more than just a coming of age romance. The author touched on so many relevant issues affecting today’s society, including homelessness, poverty, bullying, abuse, medical issues, abandonment and so much more.
With complex well-developed characters each battling their own issues, a layered storyline with so many different dynamics and an epilogue that will make you smile and bring you to tears The Girl in the Love Song was a definite 5 star read and an epic start to this Lost Boys series.
Just Beautiful!!
I don’t think I’ve ever read an Emma Scott book without wanting more. She has a way with her words that entrap you with the characters and you want it to go on and on until they’ve fulfilled each other wholeheartedly.
This story begins with Violet & Miller as teenagers in high school. They meet by chance and immediately become best friends.
Violet has her life all planned out but she didn’t expect Miller in her life. She so stuck in her goals and what she thinks her life experiences need to be she misses the one important person right in front of her. Miller.
This story has a little of everything, every first!
Young lovers who fight through every obstacle that is thrown their way and stay true to their love for one another. Full of angst and emotions you just can’t keep hidden.
I can’t wait for the rest of the series! The boys are everything!
6 stars!
Violet McNamara had everything money could buy, but wasn’t really seen. She was the nerdy, brilliant overachiever, who strived to be a doctor even at age thirteen. She has always been kind, positive, dedicated, and caring.
When Miller Stratton stumbled into her life one day, she decided to keep him. His home life was a wreck and she made sure he was cared for and appreciated. They became best friends and even through challenging times, they never wavered.
By age seventeen, things had started to shift. Miller knew he was in love with her but was afraid to tell her, so just kept writing love songs about her. And Violet’s social status was changing, but she was still loyal to Miller as her best friend and did not want to risk losing him by trying something different. As they make new friendships and deal with new challenges, their lives are constantly changing. Eventually, it will be time to deal with their feelings and their futures. And that takes the story in even more different directions.
These characters are developed so well that they felt real to me. Not just the main couple, but also the Lost Boys and the others: Ronan, Holden, River, Shiloh, and Evelyn. All of them have secrets, challenges, pain, and fears…no matter how it looks on the outside. My heart hurt for them and rejoiced with them. There is definite angst, lots of issues, and frustrating miscommunication. I may have shouted at my kindle a couple of times. But I was totally immersed in this world and these characters. It is a longish book and took me several nights to read, but I found myself staying up and reading later than I should and excited to get back to it the next night.
This is an epic, emotional, intense, angsty, and touching story of friendship, soul mates, family ties, and how they can shape people. None of them had it easy. But somehow along the way they found each other and made their own family, but are also faced with change and loss.
This book brings all the feels and I will admit I shed some tears(and I usually do not in books). Miller and Violet are that couple that you know are meant to be together, but have to endure so much. But I adored them and their devotion to each other. I do not give out six stars often, but this is just so special and it made my heart sing. I am so ridiculously excited about the next couple in The Shadows of Yesterday! Their relationship has been teased and I am all in. And I am looking forward to Ronan’s story as well.
And I have to remark on this amazing cover, that just is Miller Stratton personified. And there is an amazing little surprise embedded in the book that just brings him and his words even more to life. Miller is just such a broken, vulnerable, lovable hero and he stole my heart. And Violet is just the right girl to love him enough to try to piece him back together. Don’t miss this slow-burn, friends-to-lovers, rock star romance that is hopeful, poignant, and inspiring.
Be ready with tissues and wine because Emma Scott is going to take you on a heartwrenching trip in The Girl in the Love Song. She put my heart through hell and I am completely obliterated! What an inspiring and riveting story of friendship and love!
Miller and Violent are from two sides of social spectrum. Miller is fighting with poverty and just trying to stay afloat. It’s more difficult with his Diabetes. And Violet is from more affluent family but the most precious thing about her is her kindness. Their unlikely story started at thirteen years of age. And the story begins to become more complex as they grow up. Miller is a talented musician but it’s possibly not enough for him to get his mom and himself out of their shady life. And Violet wants to become a doctor and slowly she is getting engulfed by the politics and popularity and typical shenanigans of senior year. Can they still stay best friends? Are they only best friends?
This story is the first in a new series by one of my most favourite author. And this was an amazing start. It’s an epic love story spanning over years and places. You experience the evolution and growth and change of the characters. Also I feel this story has a range of awesome secondary characters. Like rich but not giving a shit to popularity boy Holden. Like angry but fair and misunderstood bad boy Ronan. Queen bee Evelyn. Violet’s best friend Shiloh and River, the quarterback with secret issues. It was a colourful and interesting assortment. So many complex and intriguing dynamics was around. Emma Scott went into depths of high school angst and identity crisis and I loved the emotional impact.
Then of course you have the broken and tortured musician pining for his best friend. The feels were so overwhelming. They hurt each other even when they needed each other. Their love was a living breathing sensation that infiltrated my heart and soul. And I felt every joy, every ache, every heartbreak, every ecstasy and every twist. That’s the power of Emma Scott’s writing. They tried to avoid falling in love to save their precious friendship as they both didn’t have good example in their lives. But it was inevitable, undeniable and extraordinary. The story was equal parts pain and contentment. And it took me to the very edge of loss and sadness! The HEA was magical and so well deserved after everything they went through.
The Girl in the Love Song by Emma Scott was a blissfully aching read. It left me with a heart full of emotional scars but I relished every moment of it! A breathtaking story of life changing love.
Received ARC for honest review
Oh my goodness.. my heart. Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions. Be prepared to fall in love with Miller by 14% into the book.
This book is a slow burn that builds. You will yell in frustration and sigh with a tear rolling down your cheek.
Violet and Miller are pure perfection.

If ever there comes a time that I don’t get hit with all the emotions while reading an Emma Scott book, someone call for help, as I am clearly not okay.
This cast of characters. My goodness.
Violet & her dreams. Miller & his destiny. Their friends hiding in the shadow, trying so hard to wait for their books.
This was an incredible story. Of friendship. Of love. Of finding what’s important and WORKING for it.
I was consumed by the words on the page, and in return I devoured them in record time.
Long time fans of the author will see classic Scott style in these pages, but new readers will be introduced to something that they haven’t experienced with another author.
I never cry over a book, but The Girl in the Love Song was heartwrenching, passionate, and beautiful. From the beginning to the end, the reader will see the pain but also the growth that both Violet and Miller go through. I immediately fell in love with Miller and the strength that he has shown from the beginning. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster that I never wanted to get off. Although this book had me in tears, I was so sad when it ended. This will be one of my top books of the year.
My heart broke several times and I loved it! This book has all the feels: love, hate, despair, disappointment, envy, jealousy, friendship, disdain, bullying. This perfect book will take you through all of these feelings, leaving you winded from such an emotional ride. I fell in love with these two kids, laughed and cried through their journey to adulthood, despaired at all of the obstacles in their way, and rejoiced in their HEA. And I got to share their trip with them!
Violet watched her parents fight constantly, and it made her lose her faith in love. Miller has anger because his father abandoned him and his mother and left them destitute. Now he doesn’t trust in love’s permanence. So when Miller appears in Violet’s life, they form a strong connection, he recognizes she’s the love of his life but fears that she will go away. Likewise, Violet will forever try to stick Miller in the friend zone so she will never lose him, like her parents lost each other.
My heart broke in so many parts where their situations were dire, and I loved the devotion they had for each other. They are both devoted and generous in their love, supporting to each other. Miller is a musician, writing music is his superpower, and all his songs are for Violet. True to her beliefs, they made a blood bond to always be friends.
“I wanted to laugh and tell her how impossible that is. How I crossed a boundary the night we met. How all the broken pieces of my life come together when I’m with her, even for a little while. How we’d been hanging out for months and every minute I tried to find the courage to tell her that this poor homeless kid with nothing to offer would die for her.”
The book encompasses the years since they were thirteen up to Violet’s first year of college. We get to meet other friends who add so much to this story. Holden is the rich boy, broken but hides it behind his wealth and expensive clothes. Ronan is the strong, silent type, heavily tatted, mysteriously absent from school many days, most of them in detention. They made this strange association, and were dubbed the lost boys by Violet’s friends.
There’s Shiloh, wise and bohemian, and Evelyn, scheming and envious of Violet’s popularity. Riven, Violet’s crush since grammar school, has secrets and is strangely weird when they are crowned homecoming king and queen. Miller’s mother is the epitome of despair. Abandoned by her husband, working two jobs and not able to make ends meet, she surrenders to bad decisions. There’s a hopelessness in her that just breaks your heart.
In spite of the intensity of their feelings, Violet and Miller have moments when they are close and moments when they are estranged. Notwithstanding their situation, their love is always there, they run to each other when they had medical emergencies (there are a few!), there is a constant devotion and desire for each other’s happiness. I loved the grace with which Miller dealt with all his situations.
After I finished reading, and I was reeling from all the feelings, I savored the memory of this beautiful romantic story. They just needed to go through their paces to cement their love for ever after. And my heart was mended again! One of my 2020 favorite books!
I loved this one. Miller has had a rough childhood. Miller is sweet and nice. Things didn’t always go good for him but he’s a character that you’ll root for to get his dreams. He become friends with Violet. They come from different backgrounds but are perfect friends. Violet’s family has money but she’s not a snobby girl. She studies hard and works hard. As Miller and Violet grow there are more then friends feelings between them but hey never seems to be on the same page. They have ups and downs and it’s emotional at times. This is a great read. I definitely suggest you pick this one up.
I didn’t realize to the end of the book that this one is book one in The Lost Boys series. Miller and Violet’s story finishes up nicely in this one and the next book in the series will be other about other charters we meet in this one.
I have a very tumultuous relationship with Emma Scott’s work. She writes tropes, that are hard for me.
I never pick up angsty romance books set in High School, as I have plenty of teenage angst living under my roof… The exception being an Emma Scott book!
I can’t NOT read her words.
Beneath all the teenage drama, Emma is building the foundation for this deeply emotional telling of pure innocent adoration growing into a forcefield of love that hits me right in the gut. And as with all her work, I am left in tears.
Every time I pick up an Emma book, I know it will not be an easy read. She does not write to make our lives easier or to forget our troubles. She writes to put a spotlight on hard issues. To broaden our horizon. I know I have to do my part, climb the mountain, to get to the exquisite view and have my emotional rush. I do it gladly, scared of what she might put me through, but knowing it will be worth it in the end.
A coming of age story of Miller and Violet.
This is one of the most emotional coming of age stories I have read in a long time. Emma Scott has a very special voice when creating these characters. Each character is complex and adds so much to the story. The emotions of this story seem to bleed from the pages creating a truly powerful love story.
The Girl in the Love song is a very well written story full of teenage drama, growing pains, evolution of friendship. All of the characters are beautifully flawed both the main and the supporting characters. Each character adds so much to the story. This once in a lifetime love in this story gives you so much hope for Miller and Violet. At such a young age they seem to overcome so many the obstacles in their way. This isn’t your everyday Rockstar romance. I wouldn’t even really call it a Rockstar romance. It is more about finding your missing piecing, a once in a lifetime love.
This was a story of self-discovery and following your heart. This was a 4/5 read for me. It is very well written and a wonderful story. I would classify this as more a Mature YA read over a New Adult Genre. Also, this isn’t really a Rockstar romance, it is more about navigating they trials of growing up and finding your place.
Oh wow – just found a new great author! I loved this book and I’m so glad it is the start of a series!!! I could not get enough of Miller and Violet. Even the rest of the characters had my heart. This friends to lovers story that spans over years blew me away starting when they meet at thirteen. The Girl In the Love Song had me on the best emotional rollercoaster from friendship, young love to more with all the feels, up and downs I never expected. Have Kleenex ready! This book is so much more than I can put into words. I loved every page and can’t wait for more in this series!!!
*4,5-5 stars*
Stop what you are doing and read this book ‘cuz this is a story is one that will turn your world upside down and make you believe in the good of people as it was not only a heartwarming but also a heartbreaking story that gets to all of your emotions. One of the things this author really is so good at is that whenever you read a book by her, it always pulls on your heartstrings. That’s why she’s really become one of my favorite authors. Violet but especially Miller will take your heart by storm!
Violet may have all the things her heart desires but nothing is what it seems. When she first meets Miller, there’s just something about him that draws her closer to him and they become fast friends. But when she finds out Miller is hiding something important, she’ll do whatever it takes to keep him safe. Years go by and their bond grows stronger but the future is still unclear. Violet is trying to get into college and becoming a doctor to help people but something will jeopardize everything she has worked so hard for and when she and Miller go through a rough patch, it’ll be harder for them to hold on to the friendship they have built. Although feelings have grown throughout the years between them, Violet still doesn’t know how Miller truly feels and when he is trying to make it in the music business, he may get the opportunity of a lifetime. Will they find their way to each other? And will both finally be able to have everything they’ve dreamed about… together?…
No one hits me in the feels with their words quite the way Emma Scott does. You can tell what a truly beautiful heart she has every time you pick up one of her books. I don’t really know how to explain it, it’s really something you have to just experience by reading her work to really grasp, but you can feel how much artistic beauty bleeds into every character she writes. It’s something I’ve only every really experienced with her writing and something I find myself loving every time. No matter how different the characters, no matter how different the story the heart and soul she puts into her writing pours off the pages.
The Girl in the Love Song is angsty, it’s emotional. It’s full of first love, teenage dreams, and growing pains. It’s packed with characters who don’t have perfect lives and are beautifully flawed. But most importantly it’s filled with once in a lifetime love that gives you hope that love really can overcome the obstacles life throws in the way. This isn’t your everyday rockstar romance. This book is a lifetime of love, failure and success that keeps you riveted to Miller and Violet’s story through all their ups and downs.
You will cry, you will yell, you will shout with joy then cry again with tears of happiness while reading this one.
Emma Scott is one of those kind of writers whose books I read without even knowing the synopsis and it is always certain that I will fall in love. With The Girl in the Love Songs, it was no different. She brought to life characters so real that it seems that we already know them from somewhere.
Violet is a normal girl with a crush on the most beautiful boy in school and who has everything she wants except a quiet family. His parents lately look like strangers and can only scream at each other. Right on her birthday as they fight, she sees a boy she doesn’t know from her window and even though he is a total stranger, she can’t resist getting close because of the loneliness that she feels in her room.
Miller is a suffering boy who saw his life collapse overnight and witness his mother’s constant struggle to give her son a roof and food without success. In a distressing night, he decides to take a walk to escape his harsh reality and ends up meeting the sweet Violet.
From there, a beautiful, painful and exciting new journey begins for these two young people.
The book is divided into three parts each showing a moment in their lives since the moment they met at thirteen years old and I confess that the part I loved most was without a doubt the one that shows they discovering love.
I loved Miller’s friends so much and fell in love with Rider too. I can already imagine how tense and strong book two will be. I also loved the songs and the moment when they are presented. I loved the cover and all the sweetness transmitted by it.
5/5 stars
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.
This story was so moving. I am all sorts of torn up inside right now. This book reaches so far down inside you that it touches parts of your heart that you didn’t know existed. This is such a transformative story that I can’t sing my praise for loud enough!
Emma Scott’s writing style is light and airy but at the same time, it is full of depth. There is so much emotion packed into the words on the page. I fell into this story instantly. I thought that the plotting of the story was brilliantly done. This was a story that I couldn’t get enough of.
Violet and Miller were characters that had so much depth. There was so much to their personalities and identities. They had beautiful aspirations and they also had struggles that took a little piece of them. Their lives weren’t perfect and they had intense backstories that really made their personalities shine. Both Violet and Miller were relatable and likable characters that you couldn’t help but root for. Falling in love with these characters wasn’t even an option for me, it was automatic. This book also boasts a fantastic cast of secondary characters. I can’t tell you how excited I am to read the rest of the books in this series!
This love story was like my kryptonite with the childhood friends trope. Violet and Miller meet when they are thirteen years old and it happens during a traumatic time in Miller’s life. Violet’s home life isn’t a piece of cake either and they form this intense bond. The connection that they had, from the time they were thirteen years old, is such a tangible and palpable thing. The love that forms between them from such a young age carries through with them as they get older. Their love story is just beautiful from start to finish.
Overall, this is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story that will cut your edges and smooth them over again. This book definitely takes your heart for a journey. These Lost Boys have won over my heart and I truly cannot wait for the rest of their stories!
Well, she’s done it again…Emma Scott just went and drop kicked me right in the chest. I’m not even mad about it. I did hug my pillow while I was reading The Girl in the Love Song though.
There was something so sweet and heartbreaking about Violet and Miller. The challenges they faced both together and apart. The love that transformed from friendship to youthful wonder to deep and adult. They were it for each other, if only they could get out of their own way.
No lie, Violet and Miller’s journey was hard. They battled circumstance and high school and hormones and life that was less than kind. But their love was timeless. Pure. Sweet. It came from the best parts of who they were. Drowned out their fears and faults and lifted them up when they were at their lowest.
From first kisses to first times to forever and everything in between, The Girl in the Love Song was the most tender, full of feels, friends-to-lovers romance. Yes it was angsty. Yes it slayed me- this is Emma Scott we’re talking about. But my heart is full to bursting with joy at the way Miller and Violet’s story ended.
6 stars!!!
Miller and Violet meet at 13 when Miller stumbles out of the woods into Violet’s yard. The friendship that quickly forms is sweet, strong, and the most stable relationship in either of their lives. Miller knows struggle: at the time he meets Violet he is experiencing severe poverty, and even as they progress through high school, his family’s financial situation is always precarious. Violet’s family is rich, but things aren’t perfect in her household either. They lean on each other to deal with the challenges in their home lives. As they age though, the feelings deepen and develop into more, but Violet can’t let feelings get in the way of her plans, nor can she risk ruining the most important friendship she has.
Though they form their friendship fast and early, the rest of their relationship is a slow-burning struggle. Miller is such a thoughtful, caring soul, but he has a lot of personal pain that he turns to his music to process. It’s no surprise when his song writing turns to the feelings building between him and Violet, but Violet doesn’t see herself as the girl in his songs. She is focused on her education and career aspirations, but encourages him to share his musical gift with the world.
These two are not perfect, but they are perfect for each other. I loved how they each supported and pushed the other to reach for their dreams without compromising, even if it meant they had to say goodbye. But there is also a deeper thread tying them together that had me worried for their hearts and their future.
This is a huge coming of age story spanning their entire teenage-hood and into their 20s. The timeline alone makes this a sweeping story, but the depth of emotions they face throughout makes it even more special. I was not expecting to fall quite so hard, but I loved every character in this story. Even characters I initially didn’t like found a way to redeem themselves and I found myself liking them by the end.
These Lost Boys each stole a piece of my heart in their own rag-tag way. They have a bond formed by their lack of conformity, and the family they form by choice had me in love with all of them and anticipating the stories that will follow this one.
This is the first book I’ve read by Emma Scott, but I can’t wait to read more, both from this series and her other works in general. I was talking about this for days after I finished, and am still thinking about the depth of the connections. I was afraid to start another book when I finished for fear that whatever book I picked up next would pale in comparison.
What A Story. I never read a book that sucked me in as quick as this book did. I can honestly say this is possibly the best story I have read in the friends to lovers trope. The book is more than a journey for me. It’s a coming of age tale without a doubt. The growth in this book is beautiful to read.
Miller and Violet’s story is one I feel will stay with me for a very long time. I was so so emotional reading this book. I cried many tears, my heart broke for these two people for so many reasons. For the cards they were both dealt and for the life and time, they wasted for fear of making the mistakes of their parents.
The characters that support this story are amazing and I am so invested in those as well. So I hope and pray we get to hear other lost boys’ stories soon. I have purposefully been vague with this review as this is a story that must be experienced first hand. The feels I got from this book, is the reason for my silence. I wouldn’t want to steal that feeling from someone else.
This is the first read for me from this author and I don’t know why I waited so long. I will wait with bated breath for the books to come in the Lost Boys series. I totally recommend this beautiful romance. That is one of the most touching reads I have read for a long, long time. I think this is my book of the year, as it will take a lot to beat it, for me.
