Violet and Miller’s story is bittersweet but so full of Love. As you turn the pages you will be sad from all the reality that surrounds them both but in the end you will be comforted from it as well.
Now we wait for River and Holden’s story next!
I feel it’s my civic duty to share this gem by Emma Scott….which I finished in less than 48 hours.
It was so good I chose to bury myself in the lives of Violet and Miller and ignore my own family 😉
You would think the age difference between the characters and me would create a disconnect, but you would be wrong.
At times, it reminded me SO much of my past. Other times, I wanted to hug Violet and Miller so dang tight…like I do my own teenagers.
If you’re looking for a good read with hear and soul, check out The Girl In The Love Song.
OMG absolutely loved this story. The way that Violet and Miller’s friendship starts and progresses is well written. The challenges that they faced, with their families, classmates, friends and even health, made me cheer for Miller and I couldn’t wait until Violet realized his love for her. The supporting characters were also so likeable, I hope to read their stories soon.
I won a copy of this book from the author in a Goodreads Giveaway and asked to leave a review when done.
I’ve only read 3 books by the author but the first one made me fall in love with her writing and characters and now I cannot stay away from anything she writes.
Miller and Violet are perfect together. Friends from teenage times, going through the ups and downs of life and hard decisions for their future, there’s only one constant thing in their life-their hearts belong to each other. No matter what happens and where they go, nothing will change that.
It’s another beautifully written story that will pull at your heartstrings and give you hope for a love story that will stay with you for a while.
Get ready for a story that will have your heart taken on a journey from Miller Stratton and Violet McNamara’s first meeting when they were are just starting out as teenagers. They grew up on opposite sides of the tracks and while both of them dealt with challenging issues in life they were the one constant in each of their lives in good and in bad. Over time it grew in something more; however, the want for more held them back afraid of the possibility that they could lose each other.
This was not just another friends to lovers story. It goes deeper with the issues of being homeless and dealing with chronic diseases along with dealing with life that are thrown at you in between. Author Emma Scott knows how to grasp your emotions to come from all directions. It was heartwarming, unexpectant, and filled with moments that will have you swooning.
As always Emma Scott gave everything and once again delivered a perfect romance book that I loved from the start. Like her previous books, this one ignited all the feelings in me.
The Girl in the Love Song is an amazing and moving friends-to-lovers and firsts love story that certainly doesn’t belong to these shallow stories about young love. The author has included many threads in this book that have added more depth to the whole story and kept my interest up to the last pages.
Miller and Violet are beautifully created characters with hard family life. Violet – a wise, ambitious, sociable girl and Miller a talented, determined outcast. Such a pair can be considered as a little cliché but their story is so much more.
The Girl in the Love Song is a story not only about love but also about overcoming fear, about forgiveness, sacrifice, determination, and building beautiful friendships.
I am so happy that Emma Scott decided to create a series that will include Ronan and Holden’s story. I can’t wait to get to know about them and their stories a little more.

Wow this was a beautiful captivating story about Violet and Miller who meet when they are 13. They go through so much in a short time. so many feels. Cannot wait for more Lost Boys
This book is funny, and sweet and all the things a good romance book should be. I really enjoyed it!
Every once in awhile I have a mind altering, emotionally stirring, and soul satisfying experience while reading an author’s work for the first time. Such is the case with Emma Scott’s The Girl In The Love Song! As I closed the book, I was left with tears on my cheeks, a smile on my lips, and a compelling need to read more by this gifted writer.
Violet first met Miller, the boy with holes in his pants, the one who lived in a station wagon and also has juvenile diabetes when they were 13. Since then they both have been best friends. Fast forward through out the years Miller always knew he was in love with Violet since the first time they met, he wrote songs for her and played them to her. But Violet at the time didn’t want to acknowledge her feelings for Miller because she didn’t believe in love. She didn’t want to ruin the friendship she had with Miller over Love as she has witnessed first hand about failed marriages because of her parents.
When I started this book, I’m going to be honest, I was bored. I was basically just skimming through the pages trying to finish it or waiting for things to become interesting as I didn’t want to DNF another book.
Miller and Violet both loved each other but their issue was that they weren’t really doing anything about it. Miller was chickening out from confessing his feelings to Violet and Violet was too busy ignoring all of Millers songs that were clearly written for her. It took Miller trying to date someone else for Violet to admit that she actually has feelings for her best friend. But again no one did anything about it. They just watched each other with other people and finally when the hormones couldn’t be kept at bay they kissed each other.
“I’m sorry, Vi. For a lot of things. I’m sorry I went silent on you. Disappeared. I’m sorry I ran to another girl when I should have told you the truth, that we always felt like more than friends. From the very first day. But I said nothing.”
After they officially got to together the book started to get a tad bit interesting. Miller signed a contract with a record label, recorded his first album and started touring with Ed Sheeran, while Violet was in Texas perusing her medical degree. The second half of the book was how they tried to make long relationship work. I loved how there was no OW or cheating scandal drama. Miller stayed loyal towards the end.
“I want to marry you, Vi. I want to grow old with you. I want to celebrate wedding anniversaries with you that make people stand up and applaud when they hear the number. I want to tell people that you’re the love of my life and that I knew that was true because I met you when I was thirteen years old. And that was it. There was never going to be anyone else.”
I’m like confused with the rating, I didn’t LOVE the book but didn’t hate it either. It’s like in the middle for me. So I’ll keep it safe and give it 3 stars. This is a light summer read, I’m sure if you like reading contemporary romance/less angst books then I’m sure you will love this one

I am going preface this review by saying Emma Scott is one of my top favourite authors. I have never ever read a book of hers that I didn’t like and that includes this one. While this book was not my favourite I am still glad I read it and base my review on the fact that I am not a fan of the young adult genre. I gave this a chance because I love Emma’s writing but the high school drama, the back and forth, and inability to communicate drove me absolutely crazy for the first half of the book. Having said that this story is still a beautiful telling of a young girl who seems to have it all on the outside and a young boy living in poverty and how they fell in love.
From an outsider looking in Violet seems to have it all. She comes from money, lives in a fancy house in a ritzy part of town and is popular at school. But it really is all about appearances because Violet’s home life is not so cushy and has some tough stuff going on with her parents. Violet is driven, focused and beautiful. She has a huge heart and I adored her connection to Miller from the moment they met. What I didn’t like was her inability to communicate with Miller and the way she made rash decisions based on emotion only. Overtime she does eventually start to mature and make better decisions and is able to admit to herself that she and Miller were destined to be together.
“An understanding that he and I were inevitable. Fated. The boy with diabetes and the girl who was going to be a doctor. The girl with the romantic heart and the boy who wrote love songs.”
Right from the start of the book you know Miller is a complex character. He is hurting because his father up and left he and his mother and him in poverty. He is then diagnosed with a medical condition that makes life even tougher for him. The moment he meets Violet he is taken with her and keeps coming back. They built a beautiful friendship before all else. At 13 years old Miller knew he loved Violet.
“I don’t like her. I love her with every goddamn piece of my soul.”
Every single lyric Miller writes from the time he was 13 years old was for Violet. He adores her and tries to keep his feelings for her pushed away and makes some stupid decisions along the way. He makes it big in the music industry but never ever looses sight of his love for Violet.
“Every note, every tune, every phrase and lyric were born from the same place in me that loved her and always would.”
All in all this was okay read. I adored the epilogue and ending. So freaking sweet!
***5 “Inevitable!!!” stars***
“A person often meets her destiny on the road she takes to avoid it.”
Honestly, i really don’t know what i would like to tell you about this story!!!
Emma Scott is one of my favorite authors and for a good reason!!!
She is making me feel everything in the maximum…
From the very first moment, she squeezed my heart in the palm of her hand and she wasn’t letting me go…
I love her stories so much, i adore her characters and my heart is beating for them throughtout the book and after!!!!
It’s impossible to forget them!!!! Ever!
“It’s very difficult to look at someone you love and see only the day they might leave you. The urge to protect one’s heart is the strongest urge of all. But it’s also impossible if you want to live a rich, full life.”
Miller and Violet met each other under odd circumstances when they were both thirteen.
From the very first moment, they forced an impenetrable bond and there were connecting with a big love and affection.
Is it possible to fell in love at age thirteen???
I believe it is and our heroes had proven that fact to us, but…. the road ahead of them were full on bumps and thorns…
Their friendship were too important to be jeopardized!!!
“He and I are impossible.”
“I loved her in a thousand ways, but she cherished our friendship above all else and so I gritted my teeth and respected that.”
Four years later, at age seventeen, Miller and Violet are still best friends…
But this year everything are going to change…
They will drift apart… They will start living seperate lives and that it might bring their downfall..
Can their love and friendship survive after everything that are standing between them???
Miller knows that he is in love with Violet and he is trying to hide it on his lyric and to show her through his music.
Violet is scared of love and future and in order to not destroy everything that she is sharing with Miller, she is living on denial.
But their friendship and their love are balancing in a very tight rope…
Will they salvage their hearts from hurt??? Or this will be the end of them???
“Every note, every tune, every phrase and lyric were born from the same place in me that loved her and always would.”
“Our love for each other melding us together, while circumstance pulled us apart.”
“That’s why she’s fighting so hard. In her mind, things are either falling apart or they’re standing still. Never becoming something beautiful. She’s trying to hold the two of you still, so you don’t fall apart.”
Well, i really loved this story…
It was so sweet, so heartbreaking, so raw and real…
I loved Miller so much!!! This guy broke my heart so many times… He was such an amazing person… A rough diamond hidden in plain sight. Miller was everything…
He had such a rough beginning in his life and still he never stopped fighting… For everyone!!!
His music was his lifeline except from Violet, the girl in his love songs…
His love for this girl was shining so brightly and when he was losing his courage, my heart was aching for him.
“This is yours. Always. I’ll be whatever you want me to be. I’ll be your friend if that’s what you want… Or I’ll be… more. I’ll be nothing. All I want is for you to be happy.”
Violet was also a very kind and beautiful person.
She seemed to have everything, but you never know what is happening behind close doors. Right???
And everything that were happening in there, was making her to deny love in order to not ever lose her best friend.
To be totally honest with you, at some point, i got mad with her and that stupid denial cause she was letting something amazing slip through her fingers… And i couldn’t stand Miller’s pain!!!
But i can not deny that Violet was one of a kind girl!!!! She deserved to be the girl in Miller’s love songs, after all!!!
“My crush on River had begun long before I met Miller, but now I felt like I was clinging to it as a safety net. Miller’s kiss cut the wires, and now, I was falling.”
Honestly, as much as I’ll say about this book, it will be so little.
This story was magnificent. A story that’s been written with permanent marker inside your heart and it would be impossible to ever forget it!!!
That’s the beauty of Emma Scott’s writing!!! You’ll never forget!!!
Miller and Violet were absolutely perfect!!!!
“It’s like we’re at opposite ends of a maze, and every time we get close, someone takes a wrong turn.”
But i can’t forget that in here, there were too many secondary characters that had made a great impact to me… Thank God that this book is a part of a series, cause i’m waiting ike crazy the next book in the series…
The lost boys got under my skin for good and the bond that they managed to forge in just a few months was amazing!!!!
The only thing that i didn’t like very much in here was that i felt that the lost boys lost touch after school… Hopefully, that will change in the next books..
Can’t wait to find out more about Ronan and Holden!!!
“An odd trio: a grungy musician, atattooed bad boy, and a billionaire genius who dressed like he was walking the winter runways in Milan every day. None of whom gave a crap what anyone thought of them.”
**********************************************
“That’s what they all want. Someone like you, looking at them the way you look at Violet. They all want to be the girl in your love song.”

** 4.5 STARS!! **
Violet McNamara, at thirteen, has three convictions in life: she will become a surgeon, attend the university of her city, Santa Cruz, and will never fall in love, despite her crush on River Whitmore. How can she fall in love if love then turns into hatred, quarrels, bad words and broken dishes as has been happening to her parents for some time now?
Safe in her room, Violet dreams of her future and wonders how it is possible that her family is no longer the perfect portrait of happiness it was before. She feels lonely, although her best friend Shiloh is always by her side, but one night from her window she sees the silhouette of a boy emerging from the forest surrounding her house. He is Miller Stratton, thirteen years old like Violet, he has just moved to Santa Cruz with his mother. He too has three convictions in life: music, wanting to change his life in order to give a better future to himself and his mother, cause they live in a car after being abandoned by his father, and that one day when he will have his own family he will never go away and will do everything to protect it. Miller couldn’t be more different from Violet; she comes from a good family, she’s good at school and determined on her future. He is scruffy, uncertain and very hard and suspicious of others. But there is something about Violet that attracts him; and that is why from that moment the two will become inseparable. Miller will climb every evening on the trellis of Violet’s house and enter her room from the window, as Joey did in Dawson’s Creek when she sneaked into Dawson’s room.
In that room the two will share their secrets, their dreams and their fears until one evening, Miller feels bad and ends up in a hospital and Violet saves his life without even knowing it. He suffers from diabetes, and if Violet hadn’t helped him, it would have ended very badly. In that hospital bed our protagonists will make a blood pact: whatever happens, they will never stop being best friends.
Four years go by, Violet and Miller go to high school; she from ugly duckling has become a beautiful swan with black hair and blue eyes, while Miller has remained the same. Now fortunately he and his mother no longer live in a car, but in an apartment in the suburbs of the city. Violet always has that crush on River, Miller instead understood from the first evening that Violet would be the girl in all of his songs, his greatest inspiration. But they had made a deal, and he has no intentions of breaking that promise, even if it means suffering and loving her from afar. He will limit himself to writing about her in his songs, with the hope that one day Violet will understand that there is much more to them than just friendship.
What about Violet? After having had the chance to finally go out with River, the boy she’s always had a crush on, will she fall in love with him or will she finally understand that Miller is the keeper of her heart?
Once again Emma Scott doesn’t disappoint; she gives us a story of hope, compassion, absolute love, fear for the future and for what is unknown, but also of romance and second chances. Her characters are never trivial or obvious, but they are true, real, with their strengths and flaws, with their weaknesses and dreams to achieve. I suffered for Miller and his mother, for the situation in which they found themselves and for the thousands of jobs (some of them not very valuable) that his mother found herself having to do in order to give her son a dignified life and a roof over his head. I must say that at the beginning Miller also made me a little angry with his caveman attitude towards Violet; he was possessive, he didn’t want for her to live certain experiences that are practically normal in high school, all without having the courage to tell her his feelings for fear of a rejection. I found him perhaps a little coward in this, I would have liked him to throw himself and take risks, but perhaps if he had done it, the story wouldn’t have been so beautiful and would have lost its polish. And above all we would not have known Holden and Ronan, the other two Lost Boys, who will be respectively the protagonists of the second and third volumes of the series.
I appreciated Violet a lot, instead. Determined, intelligent, romantic, with a strong personality and a lot of education, a girl well-liked by everyone and that you can hardly not like. A girl who finds herself, at a certain point, seeing her dreams endangered and having to fight to make them come true, all with her own strength and without her parents’ help. I felt bad for her, and as a mother I have to say that I understood many things. Emma Scott also taught me how NOT to behave with my son, how certain actions could affect his life and future.
Violet and Miller are two lost souls who reunite, who find salvation in each other from an otherwise hard and sad life. Miller ‘s great talent for music left me stunned, I loved the fact that he always remained himself, for better or for worse, and that he always put family, friends and Violet in first place. In short, as you may have understood, if there is someone who knows how to raise the bar well beyond the limit when it comes to the perfect ideal man, that is Emma! xD
By now I already know that when I’ll go to read one of her novels I will fall in love with everything: the protagonists, the secondary characters, the setting, the story and her writing that always overwhelms me. Her delicacy in describing certain scenes and situations, in outlining the characters and experiences of her protagonists is unique, with her you will never fall into the banal, you will never get bored. Once again, the reading went through quickly and smoothly, with an excellent balance between romantic scenes, sex scenes, ironic scenes that made me smile, strange but unforgettable characters and scenes that moved me (yes, the ending made me cry, can you believe it? Lol!)
In short, for me she is now a guarantee, and I can say with absolute certainty that she is one of my favorite authors! If you love slow burn novels, first loves, quarrels and crushes in high school, perfectly imperfect but real and wonderful protagonists despite their weaknesses, if you are romantic by nature and in love with love, this is the book for you.
*ARC received from Valentine PR in exchange for an honest review*
This much awaited book by Emma was not a disappointment. Miller and Vi will always have a place in my heart. Their love for each other grew out of a teenage friendship, almost star-crossed lovers. The bond they had between them only grew as they did. Each having their own plights in life, made being there for each other strengthened their need for one another. They both had dreams and visions so totally different from each other. Even though they wanted each others dreams come true, they didn’t want to part. Theirs is a great love story, Through in some great characters like Holden and Evelyn and you have some fun and angst. There were times when I cried and times when I laughed, even times when I was scared, fearing what was going to happen… but so glad I took the journey.
Every time I finish reading an Emma Scott book I feel content and this sense of calmness sets over me. Emma’s writing is poetry—I’m overcome with so many emotions when reading her words. She has an impeccable way of making me so invested in her characters, and it’s no surprise that Miller and Violet made their way into my heart and firmly stayed there.
From the very first pages Violet and Miller captured my heart. These two had me feeling everything. Violet and Miller form a special bond at the age of thirteen. From that first encounter it was set in stone they’d share a friendship like no other. I found myself rooting so hard for them and the undoubtable happiness they both deserved.
Violet has always wanted to become a doctor. She’s had her life mapped out and hopes to fulfill her dream. Vi has such a beautiful and selfless heart. Her kindness knows no bounds and it showed in how much she cared for Miller. He entered her life at the exact moment she needed him, and vice versa.
Miller, oh how my heart ached for him. Everything that had happened and everything that he was going through broke me. One day at a time, he just had to keep chanting that mantra. The best thing that could’ve happened to him was having Violet as a friend. No matter what, he knew that he could always count on her.
Violet and Miller share an unbreakable bond. They both develop stronger feelings for the other, but don’t act on it. Neither, especially Violet want what they feel to ruin their friendship. They struggle with this and end up hurting more because of it. Their story isn’t easy and it had quite a few roadblocks, but in the end what flourished was a beautiful and limitless love.
The Girl in the Love Song is the first book in the Lost Boys series. It brought all the emotions and tugged at my heartstrings. A story filled with angst, heartbreak, and hope. You can’t help but root for Violet and Miller and root for their much deserved happiness. And I can’t wait to know more about Ronan, he definitely became one of my favorites.
Emma does it again, and keeps on doing it…writing AWEMAZING books!!! The Girl in the Love Song is no exception. Miller and Violet meet on her 13th birthday, and there is a connection and bond between them from the beginning, and continues as they get older and feelings change for both of them, but for different reasons don’t share their feelings with each other. Miller has had a rough life, and doesn’t feel he’s good enough for Violet, and she is afraid that she will lose Miller if things change, and she’s kinda denying her true feelings. Things happen, lives change….can Miller and Violet make it through these changes….will they lose everything? Guess you’ll just have to read this stunning story to find out!! This is book one in the Lost Boys Series, and you meet all the players in the books yet to come…I can not wait to see what Emma has in store for us next, I just know it’s a ride I want to be on!!
Love, love, love this book! Emma has such an art for crafting an amazing story. Everything is just so realistic and full of depth. I feel like I know these characters inside and out and am living vicariously through them.
The first Lost Boys story in this series does not disappoint. Young love has many challenges and Miller and Violet are no exception. Best friends who fall in love is the best kind of story!
Wow, Emma Scott has done it again. I think this is my new favorite book by her. The Girl in the Love Song pulled me in from the very first page until the last. I loved every minute of this book and all the feels it gives you.
Violet and Miller met age and come from different worlds. She finds him one night sitting outside her window. From the very first meeting these two were drawn to each other and became fast friends. They were always there for each other and had the sweetest relationship. It took Violet a while to figure out all of Miller’s songs were about her. She might have realized sooner but was too afraid to admit it to herself. I loved watching the journey these two took.
I couldn’t get enough of this book and these characters. I highly recommend this book!
I loved this book so much. It’s angst, romantic, emotional and beautiful all at the same time. This is Emmas best book to date and I cant wait to read the rest of the series. The characters (main and side characters are awesome. I couldnt put it down. A definite must read if you love a good emotionally driven YA story that packs an amazing punch with beautiful characters and crazy but awesome angst as well.
Emma Scott is the QUEEN OF SOFT ROMANCES. There I said it. There is not a single characters in all of her books that I didn’t like. These characters are not perfect by any means, but they radiate so much GOODNESS and KINDNESS through the pages. Her books remind me that no matter what tragedy strikes, you can come out better and stronger.
The Girl in the Love Song is about Miller Stratton (H) and Violet McNamara (h). The story start when they meet the first time at the age of 13 and follows them until they’re 20. The books is divided into 4 parts. Their journal is a rollercoaster with lots of ups and downs. I’ve laughed and cried with them but the end will make you very happy.
