more
Homeless after his father deserts their family, thirteen-year-old Millar Stratton doesn’t have much faith in anyone- until he meets Violet.
Violet lives a privileged life and has never known what it means to be poor, but that doesn’t stop her from reaching a hand out to help the grungy looking boy who appears on her doorstep.
Soon, an unbreakable bond grows between the two and when Millar is diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes after a scary situation, Violet vows to watch over him.
A ball and chain of rules and diets and restrictions, needles and pills that I’d have to carry across a tightrope without a net, for the rest of my life.
THE GIRL IN THE LOVE SONG- EMMA SCOTT
High school is tough for the street kid, even though Millar and his mom now live in a dumpy two bedroom apartment. He’s watched Violet blossom throughout the years and it makes him proud, and jealous of every guy who tries to go out with her.
Violet doesn’t understand how she went from geek to popular kid, but it’s kind of nice to have fun her last year of high school before she starts the strenuous studies for med school. She just wishes Millar was by her side as more than a friend. Violet’s parents loved each other and now they constantly argue- cementing her fear of taking her and Millar’s relationship to the next level.
Millar is madly in love with Violet, but doesn’t dare step over the limits of their friendship for fear of pushing her away. Instead he opens his heart the only way he knows how- writing songs that allow him to pour out his feelings in the melodies.
Millar, together with a ragtag group of friends, learn that life’s lessons can knock you down, but love can change the outcome.
This book had me in tears a couple of times. It puts a spotlight on T1D (Type 1 Diabetes) and the life-threatening complications associated with this disease. My grandson was diagnosed five years ago. He’s now thirteen (like Millar) and has faced many of the symptoms described. It is my hope and prayer that one day soon a cure will be found.
Until then, I am grateful amazing writers like Emma Scott can use their platforms to shed a light on illnesses, racial diversity, sexual discrimination, and homelessness.
We need to do more to change our world.
I WANT TO BE THE GIRL IN THE LOVE SONG!!!
Y’all….I’m a huge Emma Scott stalker and I have to tell you that each book I read by her.. that there is no way that she could top the last book I read by her.
But each time she blows me away and I have no words to write my review…she always leaves me speechless. I love her stories and get sucked in mega big!!!
Thank you for writing Emma!!! You are AMAZING!! XOXO
“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”
The Girl in the Love Song by Emma Scott is an emotional coming-of-age love story drowning in angst from beginning to end!
When we first meet Miller, he’s a grouchy thirteen year-old, angry with the world. He’s hurt and sad, and feeling lost. One night while escaping from home, Miller ends up behind Violet’s backyard. Violet has just turned thirteen and is coming into herself. She wears glasses, has braces, and is kinda nerdish. After their meeting, an inseparable bond is cemented. Four years later, they’re now in high school and their friendship has become rocky. Typical high school drama stirred with lots of angst. Our beloved hero and heroine go through many obstacles as well as ups and downs before they’re finally together.
Music plays such an important role for Miller. It becomes his outlet. His comfort outside the bleak world he lives in. Through it he expresses his love for Violet.
“I ruined us the first time I kissed her. I’d demolished our friendship, and now neither one of us knew what to do with each other. I didn’t know what to do with the rush of feelings that swamped me every time we touched. Every kiss like a door opening to another life that was too fucking good. I’d been wanting her for so long, keeping her in my love songs where I got to say how it turned out.”
Emma Scott is one of those authors who puts her heart and soul into her writing. The beauty of her writing is how cut open and raw it is. She makes you feel every emotion the characters feel as if they were truly your own. The Girl in the Love Song was such a heartfelt friends-to-lovers story that sets the premise just right for future books. I loved the secondary characters in this book, especially the Lost Boys. I couldn’t get enough!
4.9 Stars
The book starts on Violet’s thirteenth birthday.
That day she met Miller for the first time.
The boy just seemed to appear out of the woods behind her house – he was very hungry and wearing very old clothes. Vi immediately invites him into her room to feed him and to talk all through the night. After that she decided he was her friend.
And he was. But for him it was also so much more.
Violet didn’t want romantic stuff to destroy what they had. But Miller found the love of his life that first night while eating birthday cake in her room.
We fast forward four years after a bit of excitement and Miller still tries to hide his feelings. Violet wants to date the quarterback and she’s finding more friends in school. They don’t see each other often anymore …
And what if suddenly Vi and Miller’s personal and professional dreams seem to come true … what will happen?
What will happen with Vi & Miller?
Will there be a Happily Ever After???

This book was just beautiful.
Rock-Star-Romances are my favorite kinds of books. And this one was just perfect. Even if it’s not really a rock star romance most of the time…I still loved it.
It starts as this heartbreaking teenager story and then we grow a bit older and it turns into a heartbreaking highschool, rock star, coming-of-age, love story drama.
Ugh. I cried a lot!
Such a sweet and sad story.
I hated Violet a little bit here and there. We get why she doesn’t want to destroy their friendship with romance. But ugh. Poor Miller!
I don’t really want to say much more. I don’t want to spoil things. It was a beautiful love story with ALL THE FEELS! That’s all you need to know to start reading!
I also really loved the other two lost boys and their love interests! Can’t wait to read their stories!
What I didn’t really love – even though it’s beautiful … the cover. The guy looks like an old 25 or a young 40. But definitely not like a 17 year old boy. And also the blurb should’ve maybe concentrated more on telling us that this was going to be a Young Adult Highschool Dramance. I was expecting only a couple of back-in-time chapters and then a real adult or college and rock star life book. BUT – I really loved what I got instead. It was a beautiful book… just that the cover and blurb might lead the reader in the wrong direction.
And another thing – purely my fault I’m sure…. I thought that the LOST BOYS was the name of the band – and we’d get three rock star romances! But nope. Only Miller is the rock star here. The other two will have completely different heartbreaking stories – we already heard some about their lives, but just tiny little snippets. Can’t wait!
THE GIRL IN THE LOVE SONG was an amazingly beautiful Young-Adult-New-Adult-Music-Drama-Love-Story! Please run to your nearest amazon for your own Miller, because this one is MINE!!!
I’ll start by saying I don’t give 5 stars very often. This is the best read of the year for me, it’s also my first book by Emma Scott. It will not be my last. She is going on my “one click” and preorder list of authors. This book is so well written. The characters are fully fleshed out, well rounded, and intelligent. The dialog is interesting and the story is completely engaging. I laughed and cried, then laughed and cried some more. The whole thing shredded my heart and then put it back together for a happily ever after. Do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK!
The Girl in the Love Song is the first book in a new series by Emma Scott called The Lost Boys.
The Girl in the Love Song (Lost Boys, #1), The Shadows of Yesterday (Lost Boys, #2), and The Last Piece of His Heart (Lost Boys, #3).
Below is a list of the leading players in series.
Miller Stratton started Santa Clara Central High School, known as the poor homeless boy that lived in a car. He is an acoustic guitar player.
Violet McNamara has a picture-perfect life; she’s the rich girl who lives in a McMansion with parents who adore her, and her life goal is to become a doctor, surgeon.
River Whitmore is the star football player who’s going to continue playing quarterback all through high school and then college or go straight to the NFL. River, is Violet’s secret crush.
Shiloh Barrera, who looks like Zoe Kravitz, lives with her Grandmother and spends every summer in Louisiana is Violet’s only friend. Shiloh has a bohemian style and creates jewelry.
Evelyn Gonzalez is the popular girl, Queen Bee, with the crew of girls. She’s dated every good looking guy in high school.
Holden Parish, a millionaire rich kid, just moved to Santa Clara from Seattle.
Frankie Dowd is the bully who rides a skateboard whose dad is a police officer.
Ronan Wentz is a big tattoo guy whose mother is dead, and the father was in prison for killing his mother, and then he was murdered in prison. He moved to Santa Clara from Wisconsin to live with his uncle until he finishes high school.
This story starts the summer before their freshman year of high school on how they all met and become invested in each other’s lives throughout high school and beyond. The Girl in the Love Song has all the feels it will keep you on the edge of your seat. Once you start reading, you will not want to put it down, and you will want to listen to her new songs.
I love how Emma Scott takes words to create a story. Moreover, she turns poetry into song and then creates a whole imaginary world filled with her characters but makes it real life. More likely, Emma looks at the real world, sees the changes she wants to make, and does it better by poetry, but she takes it one step further by putting music to her poetry. Whichever way Emma uses to create her masterpieces is perfect as long she continues to share her thoughts with the rest of the world. Yeah, it’s that impressive, and do not forget to listen to her new songs!
Add to your TBR file: The Girl in the Love Song (Lost Boys, #1), The Shadows of Yesterday (Lost Boys, #2), and The Last Piece of His Heart (Lost Boys, #3).
Miller and Violet’s story was so heartbreakingly beautiful. They both had so many obstacles to overcome from the first chapter. I found myself getting emotional on many occasions. The writing was phenomenal and enlightening.
However, I’m over the back and forth, characters not talking things out. Violet could be real annoying in the beginning, she makes up for it in the end though.
I’m am super excited for the next book. The secondary characters have stories I can’t wait to find out about.
The Girl in the Love Song was my beach companion this week which meant that it had to be compelling to be able to compete with all of the fun going on around me. SHORT STORY: it was. It was one of those reads that you can tell by the first chapter that you’re not going to want to put it down and you aren’t really going to want it to end, either.
When I started reading, I found myself charmed by Violet and curious about Miller. The more I got to “know” them, the more I began to visualize them and the words just came alive–it felt like a teen drama playing out before my eyes: she was so focused, he was so broody; he was so in love with her, she was so insistent that they could only be friends. It was sweet and agonizing. As the years progressed, the angst built. The bullies and the cool kids, the parties and the dances, the fights and the games they all played felt like a modern day John Hughes movie. I was completely entertained.
Then, all hell broke loose and, as it tends to happen during senior year, really tough life altering decisions changed the course of their lives and it was at this point that I really wanted more. I was so invested in what was going on with Violet and Miller that the last 15-20% flew by and I really wanted it to slow down. If I’m being honest, and I am, I could’ve probably used another several thousand words of story–some gaps filled in. The ending happened in warp speed and I had so many questions. My hope is that as the other Lost Boys get their stories, some of my questions will be answered. Until then, I know I’ll be thinking about all of these new characters and wondering what they’re up to and whose story we’ll get next.
5* Soul Mate Stars
Once again Emma has delivered an epic heartfelt coming of age romance. When Violet and Miller meet as 13-year old’s, they come from vastly different backgrounds, with Violet wanting for nothing and living in a wealthy neighbourhood and Miller and his Mom living in their station wagon. The only thing they have in common is their undeniable connection towards each other. They become fast friends and their loyalty towards each other is strong.
As they mature together and fall in love their journey will not be easy as they overcome obstacles such as homelessness, chronic disease, families torn apart and chosen careers. The secondary characters in the story were amazing and pivotal in the lives of Violet and Miller.
This was a beautiful emotional story filled with first loves, friendship and learning to trust and love. The angst in the story was real and perfect for young love. The epilogue was everything, I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend that everyone young or old read it.
I am beyond excited to read the next instalment of the Lost Boy which is the story between River and Holden.
5+ STARS
The Girl in the Love Song was such an angsty, emotional book! And i loved every second of it.
This book is absolute PERFECTION. I m such a big fan of Emma and her books and when she announced her new rockstar romance i m so freaking excited to read it. And omg this book killed me. So many feelings and emotions gah!!! I fell in love with Miller from the moment he was introduced. What a beautiful roller-coaster of emotions. I was absolutely hooked from the very beginning and could not stop reading.
Emma never cease to amaze me with her writing and such strong and beautiful stories. Her books hit me in the feels like no other and this was no different. There’s something different about the way Emma writes with everything in her. She pours her heart and soul which makes me fall in love with her writing again and again.
Miller and Violet are so damn cute. I love them and their friendship. And i love how Emma writes secondary characters and make you fall in love with them as well. This book is full of teenage dreams, first love, friendship, and the sufferings. The characters don’t have perfect lives and that’s what make this story more beautiful.
This isn’t your typical rockstar romance. It’s so much MORE!! I was engrossed in this story and their ups and downs and all the heartbreak, love, failure, success that i couldn’t keep it down for even a second. I was sobbing mess by the end of the book. It was jus perfect. I couldn’t stop myself from smiling like a fool. I flove it so much.
Can’t wait for more in this series!!
You will laugh, cry, yell in frustration but in the end it’s totally worth it!! you don’t wanna miss this ride full of love, angst and emotion. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
there are no words to explain how this made me feel. I loved reading this story. The way the both came together. Miller was homeless but Vi helped him out and even though she didnt want things to get in the way like her feelings because she didnt want to lose that friendship she had. But years later he wont admit his feelings just yet and well Vi is living her life normally in school.
I cried and laughed through the story and let me tell you the guy on the cover like holy moly what a hottie for sure. Cant wait to get the paperback and have this beauty on bookshelves with the rest of my hotties lol
This book was everything I was hoping it would be and more. I sat down and read this beautiful book in one day, it grabbed ahold of my heart from the first chapter. I absolutely loved Miller! This beautiful troubled boy that grows up to be such a swoon worthy musician. I was also a huge fan of the two friends he found, the lost boys. These boys were misfits in their own ways that came together and became each other’s support system, making a little run down shack in the woods feel more like a home than any of them had been used to. Violet is the kind of friend everyone wishes they had, she really does have a heart of gold. She so fiercely believes in Miller. Their friendship is something that from the very start I wanted to see withstand everything. Both of them felt those deep love feelings but they were young and so afraid of the magnitude of it all that mistakes are made. Finding their way from best friends to epic love was quite the journey. This is the first book I have ever read by Emma Scott but I am an instant fan after this book so it will definitely not be the last.
Emma Scott can’t stop to amaze me. She has a gift, pure magic in her hands. The Girl in the Love Song is an exceptional friends to lovers’ story. Deliberately and beautifully written, Miller and Violet’s story stole a piece of my heart. My soul wants to sing and praises this book. Gives it a million stars!
I love it when the story moves me and gives me all the feelings. Miller and Violet couldn’t be more different but their background and past don’t define them. They instantly clicked and it was amazing to experience their journey, with every up and down. This is friends to lovers story in the most fulfilling side, with school drama, parties, crushes, and first everything. But also story about teenagers struggling with their past, fears, health, and family issues. The author isn’t afraid to combine beautiful moments with very sensitive topics every person should be aware of.
Don’t let your past define you. Chase your dreams and surround yourself with people who believe in you and supports at every step. Miller and Violet are everything! Their hearts are strong and pure. Their love is unconditional and unbreakable. They inspire at every step and you wish you could be friends with them. I can’t wait to continue my journey with the Lost Boys series.
‘The girl in the Love song ‘ was an amazing standalone masterpiece by Emma Scott. This is the first book of the ‘Lost Boys’ series. Told in dual perspectives.
This was my first book by this author and I am an absolute fan of her writing style! The way she spun the story and forced me to feel everything the characters were going through was just amazing! I am ready for a second chance romance anytime , so when this book finally came out I was beyond excited to read this one!!
Violet and Miller absolutely stole my heart !! They were such amazing characters made by this author. From the start and right till the end , this book had me hooked ! Violet is having her thirteen birthday, when a boy appears in her backyard all of a sudden. Seeing his unkept state, she invites him over to her house for her birthday. They both share her cake and end up spending some time together. From that moment a friendship blossoms between these two, that will last forever and grow into much much more!
This book spans over a lots of years and shows us all the missed opportunities and precious moments these two had. Violet and Miller had me rooting for them right from the start and can’t tell you how much I loved the ending!! I am a woman obsessed with this book ! Miller has an unstable life and Violet is the girl who has her whole life mapped out for herself! Soon they both have differences in their lives and start to grow apart.
This author spun an amazing tale of two lost characters who found solace in each other !! These two will stay with me for a long long time and I just can’t wait for more stuff by this author! This book is recommended to all the second chance romance lovers out there!
THE GIRL IN THE LOVE SONG by Emma Scott is the first book in her LOST BOYS trilogy, and oh my goodness, it’s hands down one of my favorite reads this year! Miller is a talented musician full of potential but he doesn’t shine until later in his adolescence. Violet is a rich girl living in a luxurious mansion with a broken family and the older she grows, the more she realizes everything dearest to her is, unfortunately, a façade.
Together, Miller and Violet not only form an unbreakable friendship which turns into something MORE, but they manage to defeat their personal demons step by step. I’m literally cheering for them by the end of the book and seriously, I’ve never read anything more satisfying!
Aside from the lyrical words, what makes this book a gem is its Diabetes Awareness. Miller has been living his whole life with Type 1 Diabetes and I’m glad Emma brings some depths into the story by sharing glimpses of his daily routine, including all the insulin injections and blood glucose monitorings.
All in all, THE GIRL IN THE LOVE SONG is a solid 5-star read for me and I highly recommend it! Besides, since last week was Diabetes Awareness Week (in the UK), what better time to pick this book up than NOW!?!?!!!
***Thanks to the author and Valentine’s PR for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
I admit as eager as I was to dive into this previously I wasn’t really in that mood. Being familiar with Emma Scott I know it would be a doozy emotionally. She writes real and genuine characters and meaningful stories but they take you through a wringer.
This one is a coming of age story, Violet and Miller unlikely friends but they got along. Life is unfair and family is complicated, well they go through all that. Plus a lot of teenage angst which I’m not quite fond of but it had to happen. There was the miscommunication and immature things said and done. Ah they drove me nuts with this.
But then fast forward to years later older and more mature. The connection is still there but better. They grew up and it was wonderful to see. Hopes and dreams realized and fought for. It was special.
What I enjoyed the most is the band. The whole cast of characters not the typical band of misfits with stories to tell. It’s all these friendships that always bring it together for me. After all that it brings a dose of happiness. It’s worth the rollercoaster ride for sure.
My 15 year old granddaughter asked me how I liked the book. My answer: “It was more than I ever dreamed”. I also informed said granddaughter that when she turns 18, she will be reading THE GIRL IN THE LOVE SONG, along with A THOUSAND BOY KISSES (by Tillie Cole).
The blurb doesn’t begin to give a clue as to awareness of issues that this author shares in this book. I applaud Author Emma Scott for not only bringing these issues to light but sharing from her own heartache. This was an amazing story of first love and it’s timing. I can’t share anything more than what the blurb shared to stress how it touched my heart, but as soon as I had finished “The End”, I went straight to Facebook to contact the author for my own signed paperback of THE GIRL IN THE LOVE SONG. This is a book that will come to my recollection time and time again!
4.5*
A very moving love love story between “lost boy”, Miller, and destined for greatness, Violet.
At thirteen these two teens thought they might be in love but their friendship was too strong to cross any lines then or throughout high school.
Things become complicated as other players invade their friendship bubble and the two of them are forced to experience life without each others exclusive companionship.
As the two of them mature and realize they indeed are meant to be together they must face their short term futures alone in order to achieve their dreams.
A beautiful heartfelt story that will pull on all of your heartstrings. Love Violet and Miller’s story. Love. The connection they have with each other and how they stay true to each other even when they are miles apart.
She’s the “rich” girl, He’s the poor boy, their friendships spans their childhood through to their adult years!!
A beautiful love story of two mis matched friends, who love each other unconditionally yet, life and fear of losing each other means they can never cross that friendship line right?
Life never goes as planned for either Miller or Violet.
Circumstances are never right for them as they have to grow up real fast when faced with ordeals they shouldn’t have to face as kids never mind adults.
Violet determined to be a surgeon, Miller just wanting to get on in life and be able to provide for a proper home etc for himself and his mother.
Dreams can collapse at any time, but how to you navigate around them, when you love someone so much you cant face the thought of life without them?
OH how my heart ached for both Miller and Violet, let down by the adults who should be protecting them !! When life takes a turn for the better for Miller it takes a turn for the worst for Violet, seriously i just wanted this couple to get a break !!!!! Emma Scott definitely knows how to draw every last big fat sob out of your heart !! This couples friendship and their mis fit friends absolutely stole my heart !! A story that reminds you never to give up !!! No matter the odds !!!
