“This story isn’t one of those cardboard demon stories. It has twists and turns I didn’t see coming.” Bonnie Gill
“Let me just get this out. I LOVED THIS BOOK! Everything about it was amazing. Right out of the gate, you are thrown into the story and your emotions are taken for a ride. I was hooked from the first sentence and there was no turning back. The beginning had me on the verge of tears, which rarely happens at the beginning of a book because you are just getting started, but no, this book had me hooked.” Ivey Byrd
“I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. Ms. Gruber swept me up into the story with her opening line and kept me until the end. Lucy is a complex and strong heroine. Marcus is a unique and refreshing hero (I don’t want to spoil what’s so unusual about him).” Samantha Macdouglas
“I really enjoyed this book…In this story, each character is set up with a unique attribute that Lucy takes in stride, and the entire world is painted in a way that sets it up and brings the reader in. From the school she attends to the group of friends she interacts with the story builds a depth and world and relationships that rivals that of Twilight, Harry Potter and other classic young adults.” Crystal Wright
“The best part of this book is the uniqueness of it. Witches, demons, gargoyles, and the struggle between good and evil. It’s so much fun. It’s not something I’ve read before so I like the change.” Katelin Campbell
“Well this one was fantastic! A fast-paced plot with an immensely likable lead character.” Heather A.

This is definitely a modern retelling of good vs. evil with twists and turns that make this one book you won’t want to put down. This book reminds me of a coming-of-age story for Lucy who not only survives a difficult childhood but has to come to terms with things not being what they seem.
The characters in this book are well thought out and multi-dimensional. The way they interact with each other through the book is witty and emotional. Lucy who loses her mom and moves in with her two uncles into her grandmother’s flat comes face to face with a new reality she never knew existed. Throw into the mix a father she has never met, the crazy aunt upstairs, a brooding boyfriend, a friend group that at times are more enemy than friend, and Dylan a guy that only seems to bring trouble and you have a recipe for disaster. But when Lucy falls into danger can they all come together to save her life? Is everything always good vs. evil or does some grey in between area exist? This is one book you definitely need to read; you won’t regret it.
This book is so good!!! I love how Everything has ended up working out for Lucy. That poor girl where she came is rough and she deserves where she is now!! If you like a book about coming from hardship and the supernatural and a lovely romance thrown in there this book is for you! I can’t wait to read the other books in this series!!
This is my first read by Pauline and I must say it was a good book. It took me a minute to get hooked and read, but overall I enjoyed it and continued on to the next book in the series. You start off with Lucy losing her mother, which resulted in moving to Chicago to live with her Uncles. This is a 3 story apartment, so she ends up meeting new people on the second floor and already knows the one on the third floor. This meeting on the second floor begins her new life in Chicago. She experiences meeting new friends, frenemies, relationships, and even her Father. A lot happens and it took a minute to put all of it together, but I overall enjoyed it.
The struggle of good verses evil takes a twisted turn when Lucy Walker begins to have disconcerting encounters with the unexplainable.
Every moment of this story is filled with action and adventure and was completely packed with unforeseeable twists and turns.
The Author, Pauline Gruber, writes in such detail that she literally brings this story and it’s characters to life.
So excellent was this story I couldn’t put it down. In fact not only couldn’t I put it down but I instantly picked up the next book just to get more of this story! In one word it was … Phenomenal!
Once again it looks like my guilty pleasure has gotten the best of me! YA Paranormal books keep sucking me in! The Girl and the Raven by Pauline Gruber is no exception. I wasn’t sure how I was feeling when I first started reading, intrigued I guess. Once I got further in though, I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down! I love it.
Lucy, orphaned right before her 16th birthday, is taken in by her uncles. Within days of moving to Illinois she finds out she’s half witch. Lucy’s character development was good but she wasn’t my favorite.
My favorite characters are between Dylan and Jude. Very important figures in Lucy’s life. I was surprised at the end with the twist for Dylan but it made me love him more.
I can tell by the end this series is just getting started and I look forward to book 2!
I give The Girl and the Raven: a YA Paranormal Romance by Pauline Gruber, 4 stars.
This was a really interesting YA Paranormal Romance. It starts out pretty tragic for Lucy, but then she is given another chance to basically start all over. In this book, we really learn who she was and who she wants to be. She is such a strong person, especially for her age and while she struggles, she does what she has to for those she loves. We are introduced to so many other characters besides her that really help to make this book so much better.
Then there is the story itself. I will admit, this book seems to have some of the things that at one time we saw everywhere in this genre. To be honest, that made me question by choice of books. But I quickly realized that there was so much more to this book than that, and those things I worried about paled in comparison to the suspense and action in the story. Lucy is trying to come to terms with what she really is, trying to fit in at school, trying have a steady relationship, and all the while battling against an evil out there. There are plenty of surprises along the way too — things aren’t always what they seem.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys supernatural romance with plenty of action and strong main characters.
I just finished this set and I have to tell you that I LOVED it!! I WISH there was going to be many many more!!

If you love gripping fantasy stories and light vs dark magical battles you have got to read this series.
In the Girl and the Raven, we are introduced to young Lucy Walker who tragically loses her mom. Lucy finds herself uprooted from the only life she’s ever really known and moves from her small town to the big city of Chicago to live with her uncles. Lucy is hoping for a fresh start and a life free of drama and stress; something that young Lucy has never had before as she’s always had to look after her drug addicted mother.
What Lucy never expected was for her life to take a sudden turn with the discovery that she is half-witch and half-demon. Not only that but she meets the father that she never even knew existed. In Addition to discovering her long lost father, Lucy also finds herself battling for her life by a mysterious stranger. Clearly, this new life isn’t quite what Lucy expected but never one to back down from a challenge, Lucy faces each new challenge head-on.
Shortly after moving in with her uncles Lucy meets her upstairs neighbor, Marcus, and can’t help but become smitten with this good-looking lad. Lucy soon finds herself spending a lot of time with her new neighbor and finds herself falling in love with him. Marcus was friends with Lucy’s grandmother and promised her that he would look after Lucy and protect her, a vow that he takes very seriously. Young neighbor Marcus has a secret of his own that Lucy soon discovers. Lucy also finds herself quite attracted to Young Dylan, a boy she meets at her new high school. At first, Lucy thinks that Dylan is a jerk and wants nothing to do with him. As she gets to know him better, she sees another side of him that he keeps hidden from everyone. Suddenly she’s thrust into a love triangle as well as everything else that she is currently dealing with.
When Lucy discovers that her grandma’s beloved Raven is missing, she is determined to find it and save it at all costs. Lucy has always had a special connection with the beloved family pet. She finds herself teaming up with her neighbor, Marcus, and the two of them set off to save The Raven. Lucy’s life and everything she has ever known is forever changed as she is now thrust into a battle between good and evil.
The one thing that really drew me into this book was how strong the lead character Lucy is. Young Lucy has always had to be strong but now she really has to dig down and discover her true strengths. Lucy is one tough young lady who manages to persevere and overcome any challenge that comes her way. She will do anything to protect those that she loves. Lucy’s protective and loving nature combined with her strength is quite admirable.
I found this book had many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. From the very first page that just kind of leaves you in shock I was hooked. I immediately fell in love with the characters. I admired Lucy’s strength. The love triangle sucked me in, but I immediately became conflicted as to who would be the better choice for lucy, the brooding neighbor Marcus, or the high school friend Dylan. I love the supernatural aspect and the demons, gargoyles, and witches.
I found this book impossible to put down. As soon as I was able to, I moved on to book two in The Girl and The Raven series, entitled The Girl and The Gargoyle. I highly recommend this book and the others in The Girl and The Raven series by Pauline Gruber.
If you enjoy supernatural YA books, this one will be a perfect fit for you!
When Lucy Walker’s mother dies suddenly due to a drug overdose, she is moved from Tennessee to Chicago to live with her Uncles in her Grandmother’s old home. Not only is she thrust into a new life in a new city, she must now navigate the fact that she is a half demon, half witch. Her life in Tennessee in the trailer park did not prepare Lucy for life in the fast lane in Chicago.
This book had some unexpected twists to it and kept me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed it!
The Girl and the Raven by Pauline Gruber is a fantastic four-star read. This is number one in The Girl and the Raven series, and I enjoyed this story, it shows great promise for the series. Lucy will pull you in, her dilemma and drama will keep you hooked and leave you wanting to know everything. Lucy is tough and keeps the story together and the setting is strong, I felt it could have done with a little more putting together, it jumped a couple of times, or maybe I drifted I don’t know. This had the bones of being great, and I am hoping the second will get better.
The girl and the Raven was a book that truly surprised me! I was enthralled from the beginning and it really made me think of the Harry Potter Series! Pauline Gruber did an amazing job with the plot and it flowed so beautifully! It wasn’t what I expected from a Young Adult categorized book but it truly was attention grabbing and interesting! I am interested to see what comes next for these characters and can’t recommend this book enough! Job well done!!
This book was a lot of fun to read! Its my first by this author, and I look forward to reading book 2. Young adult supernatural books have become a lot more popular over the years and books like this are the reason why. The characters and the storylines are so very well developed and original and it takes your imagination on quite the run. Lucy came from a broken home in a sense and was very independent, and after her mother dies is moved to a loving home with her uncles. Her lifestyle and her life changes dramatically. Plus she finds out she was never so normal to begin with learning she is half -demon and half-witch. As the story progresses we watch her life go thru multiple changes, and love triangle included. This book had many twists and turns, and was difficult to put down for a even a second.
I’m loving this series. It’s so easy to read. I definitely highly recommend for young adults. Definitely can relate to be out of the loop with someone trying to protect me. Hope this is a long series.
This was my first book from this author, and all I can say is holy cow. I was so into this book! Lucy is an awesome character who is learning to overcome honestly a lot for someone of her age after her addict mother passed. Great read, I went right into the next book!
I LOVED this book!! I love a good YA/paranormal book and I was hooked. I really enjoyed the different kinds of paranormal used in this story of demons, witches and gargoyles. When Lucy’s mother passes away, she has to go live in Chicago with her uncles. Lucy learns then she is half witch and half demon and her life turned upside down and only the beginning. Add in some twists and turns that also include a love triangle between Lucy, Dylan and Marcus. I also love a strong female character and most definitely Lucy was!! I thought this book was fabulous.
The Girl and the Raven was an unexpected delight! I was hooked once I started reading and didn’t stop until I finished the whole thing!
Extremely fast paced, it wasn’t the typical cliché story line you often see in Young Adult books. You feel like you are right there in the story with Lucy, feeling what she feels along the way. I enjoyed the well written character development as the story unfolds and how the mystery around her neighbour Marcus keeps you guessing and wanting more (I don’t want to spoil any juicy details). I’m excited for book 2 and seeing more of Lucy’s story unfold, so many possibilities.
This book was a page turner of events. Other then the supernatural part it really brought back some memories of being a teenage in high school and trying to fit in. The supernatural part of this book was amazing, the twists and turns this book made always kept me wondering what was happening next, and what was going to happen. It starts off right away by grabbing up with the tragic event with her mother and then finding out who she is and what she can do. The evil that also is in the world and everything that made her come to the point where she is now. I really can’t wait for the next book; this is a must read.
The Girl and the Raven by Pauline Gruber is a captivating YA paranormal romance. With the death of her mother 16 year old Lucy’s world is turned upside down. Moving states away to live with her uncles in Chicago her world only gets more twisted around. She discovers that she isn’t just a human teenage girl, but half-witch half-demon. These secrets open a new and dangerous world for Lucy. If the normal teenage problems of losing a parent, starting at a new school, and crushing on the good looking neighbor were not enough, the magical world being added into the mix sure is enough to keep Lucy busy. New friends, old friends, family, and a boyfriend what more could a girl ask for? Danger lurks near as Lucy learns more about herself. Stranger attacks and choices must be made. A unique story that hooks you from the first page and keeps you reading. I found it hard to put the book down and cannot wait to read the next book in the series. This is my first read by Pauline and I can guarantee it will not be my last.
I got chills reading this book. From the very first page you are bombarded with emotions from Lucy. Watching her lose her mother in the most horrible way makes you want to just grab her and hold onto her and never let her go. This girl is met with trial after trial and rises above it. At first she is very reluctant. I would be too if I was in her shoes! But, you see her grow and you want to read more. The storytelling is absolutely fantastic. I enjoyed every moment of this story. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
I like how the author weaves the threads of the story through the different characters into web of intrigue.. Great foundation building for the series of stories to come. Not a regular of YA Paranormal Romance, I enjoyed the sweet romantic suspense of first love amidst all the adventure of learning who she really is.
Lucy is a girl that’s had to stand on her own for years, but now she finds herself surrounded by a family and champions she never knew she had. This is my first read by Pauline Gruber and I won’t hesitate to read the next installment!
