Recently widowed Rae Cavanaugh just survived the worst birthday of her life. Now, she and her two young children must face a holiday season filled with so many reminders of what they’ve lost. But when a coworker who’s raising his young nephew moves next door, Rae discovers that the support of a good friend, and the gift of a child, can bring back the joy of the season.
This is a wonderful novelette about two people and their changed lives due to unfortunate circumstances. Rae Cavanaugh a new widow of three months with 2 young children, Jordan & Beth, & Dylan Rademaker a single man chosen by his sister to have temporary custody of her 3 yr. old son, Jayden. Dylan’s sister was unable to care for her son due to medical reasons. Dylan had never cared for a child before so everything was new to him. Rae & Dylan were co-workers for a pest control company & neighbors in the same condo. building. The story revolves around Rae’s Birthday, Thanksgiving and ends with a wonderful gift for Christmas. It is a wonderfully written story of two separate families melding into one family. You’ll be in tears by the end. Highly recommend this story.

I received a free copy of the short story The Gift of a Child: The Gift Series : Book 1 by Donna K. Weaver and this review was given freely.
It is those moments when told well that touch the lives of others bringing them hope and happiness. Recently widowed Rae and her co-worker Dylan become close friends as they share neighboring apartments and the care of their single parent families. A compelling and emotional holiday story highlighting what makes life fulfilling: love, friendship and family.
This was such a touching Christmas story! I loved how Rae discovers that she needs to be there for her kids and that there is still hope at Christmas. Such a good clean read.
I enjoyed this short story very much. It is very powerful about how important friends are after the loss of your mate. They don’t get their HEA together. Maybe that happens in the next book in this series.
Rae Cavanaugh, a widow with two small children and one of the children is a pretty smart and caring little fellow, watches out her window as one of her coworkers walks across the courtyard at the apartment complex. She stops him and talks with him and finds out he is moving into the same apartment complex. Dylan has a child with him…his nephew, Jayden.
It’s Rae’s birthday and she is baking her own cake. She invites Dylan and Jayden over for cake and things that will change her life start to happen
Jayden and Preston become best buddies and spend a lot of time together.
The Gift of a Child is a beautiful heartwarming story from Donna K. Weaver. Rae is a very recent widow, still grieving, but having to be strong for her two children. Dylan is raising his nephew because his sister is struggling with addiction. The story is about loss and healing. I highly recommend this sweet story.

A sweet but a little sad story about grief and love. It isn’t a romance really but the love of Dylan is beautiful as he gives Rae exactly what she needs which is friendship. I understand why the author only wrote this part of the story and then wrote a continuation to fulfil the romance aspect of it but I still kinda wish it was all in one book. This book also deals with the love of a parent/caregiver to a child as well.
It is a very quick read. Only takes about an hour so it is perfect if you only have a little bit of reading time. Enjoy.
