A compelling story of love, betrayal, and ambition by New York Times bestselling author Susan Wittig Albert, The General’s Women tells the story of two women–Kay Summersby and Mamie Eisenhower–in love with the same man: General Dwight Eisenhower.
Who’s to say if everything is true in this story. But, I do believe the General had to have a paramour in this situation. (war) He did not have physical love at home in America, but during the war he had to lead, had to relieve his stress and there was a beautiful woman he could trust. The ending is sad for his war-time lover, very sad. But, President Eisenhower was a man of honor and I’m glad he went back to his wife who I believe he loved deeply and hopefully they lived in happiness the rest of his days.

II enjoyed this glimpse into the life of a hero. So much of history is revised for public consumption and this book shared the real story.

A MUST read!
Shocking but REAL read about highly notable people that were, indeed, only human. It’s both abominable and admirable to give up the woman you love to become the leader of your country. Heartbreaking at times. Enraging at others.

Wonder reading a historical book about our stellar leaders and the sacrifices they’ve had to make to serve our nation. Also reports on the “humanist” feature of them.

If you are at all interested in the history of World War II, you will enjoy this book. It is a painless way to learn about the USA’s involvement in the formation of the Allies. The story of Ike and Mamie and Kay Summersby is fascinating and the writing is very good. It is informative without dragging. A good read.

Interesting read about a subject which many Americans have wondered. It does strike me as odd that there are absolutely no papers, reports, letters, etc. that corroborate the tale.

Great to ready the American side of WWll. I usually ready the European or English side. Interesting hint at romance. Highly plausible.

This is a story I always wanted to know. It is presented in a light, entertaining way. I would still like to know more about Mamie’s view of events.

Whether this was a work of fiction or the unvarnished truth, the whole book was worth reading. The characters were portrayed in a very realistic setting and the story was told in an interesting way without any exaggeration or snide innuendos.
You can but feel sorry for the “fallen” woman and wished that things could have turned out differently. It also reminds us that sometimes, mothers do know best.

One of the best looks at Ike and his relationship with his driver during WWII. Well researched and sensitive to all three characters.

The history of WWII as a backdrop for a romance isn’t new, but this is particularly intriguing because of the probability that this was a true human story. It was a different way of seeing our 34th President.

Very interesting to learn more about Eisenhower’s life during crucial times in
World War II. His attraction to Kay Summersby was a real trial for him and caused him to have to admit his moral failing even though in the end, he stayed with his wife. I was not really an Eisenhower fan but seeing this more personal side of his character makes him seem more down to earth.

I had no idea about a relationship between Ike and Kay. This book was written very well. It told a lot about the WW2 and what was going on in those days with the various leaders of the world. The characters were very interesting and the love story between Kay and Ike very sweet. But as we know it was not to last and I think they both knew that. It was sad that they DID love each other, but nothing could be done about it.
