All Josiah wants is a little excitement. His work as an apprentice fuller is boring, and playing in the mill’s machinery isn’t that dangerous. Everything goes fine—at first.
All right, he’s lucky the wizard Elkan and his familiar, a donkey named Sar, are there to save his life. Even better, when his furious master fires him, Elkan offers him a job as his assistant. Josiah jumps at the … jumps at the chance. Traveling around Tevenar for a year, meeting all sorts of interesting people, helping the dedicated young wizard and clever donkey serve them with the Mother’s healing magic—what could be more fun?
But Josiah soon learns that while matters of life and death may be exciting, they’re seldom fun. Impulsive actions, even when taken with the best of intentions, can have devastating consequences. And some choices have the power to change the future of Tevenar forever.

I have high standards for fantasy, and this met them. The young adult protagonist is relatable and realistically flawed with a great heart. Mistakes aren’t punished, but rather opportunities for growth.
There was a twist at one point that delightfully, I didn’t see coming – although in hindsight, the clues were there.
Believable characters, and consistent world building make this a good read.
Engaging and fun to read.
If I read it, it was excellent !!!!! I READ IT. JAK,jr.
Worth reading, I purchased the other 2 in the series.
i liked the slant on the characters, and was a little surprised at the ending
This was an enjoyable read. I enjoyed the characters and the story was interesting. I look forward to reading the next book.
This book has a very original magic system. The twist when you find out how the magic is done was very unexpected. The story was very captivating and I can’t wait to read the next one. Well worth the read.
This book has one of the most unique magic systems I have ever read, as well the wonderful creation of the culture, occupations, and character names makes it an extremely enjoyable read. Josiah is a young fuller’s apprentice with a curious mind and a way of acting before thinking, but when he gets to travel around with a wizard we are taken into an amazing and fun story of adventure and magic. Definitely looking forward to the next book!
This is just a fun read that has positive messages and vibrant characters the are easy to identify with. Trying to wait patiently for the next in the series.
I enjoyed the read. Interesting world.
I didn’t love this book. The main character didn’t do it for me. I finished the book.
Better than most Fantasy I’ve read by new authors. This author will get even better with time.
Not the greatest but I got hooked on the story and got the next one in the series to find out who the characters would turn out
Bookbub promotion – tried this new-to-me book and author and am happy I did! This is a coming of age story with a fairly likeable young, male protagonist and his journey and relationship with the youngish man who becomes his mentor. The world building is fresh – magic, masters and apprentices, skills and developmental challenges, familiars, keeping the world in balance, spirituality, and (the least interesting or well developed) some young romance sprinkled here and there. The adventure story is well done and the obstacles cause you to root for the good guys. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and quickly moved on to #2 in the series!
Great read.
