Planning her best friend’’s wedding is bittersweet for Kristen — especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He’’s funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. There was one troubling scene for me and that’s only because I wasn’t expecting the story to go the direction that it went, but I went on the emotional ride and enjoyed the story.
Oh Lord. I’m in desperate need of sleep after devouring this book but I’m too freaking emotional to do anything other than think about Kristen, Josh & their incredible story. Seriously— if you haven’t grabbed this book yet, do yourselves a favor and read it. I still have tears in my eyes from the last couple of chapters & I’m 99,9% positive this is one of the hardest reviews I’ve ever had to write, simply because I loved this book beyond words. The Friend Zone managed to grasp my attention from the very beginning, from the moment Kristen & Josh meet for the first time. It was quiiiite amusing to say the least.
Josh, oh sweet Josh. He is one of the best male heroes EVER. He’s smart, honest, supportive, and most importantly— he knows what he wants and doesn’t play mind games. He is strongly attracted to Kristen from the very first moment he sets eyes on her and he doesn’t even try to hide it. It’s not as easy for Kristen to do the same thing, though. For starters, she’s in a committed relationship —with a man that’s thousand miles away. Oh, and she can’t give Josh the one thing he so desperately wants. Children. So, yeah, she decides it would be best for both of them to stick to the friend zone & not complicate things between them. Needless to say, that attempt failed miserably.
Soon enough, they find themselves in a friends with benefits situation —Kristen’s idea, not Josh’s. He would love nothing more than to be in a committed relationship with her, but she’s adamant about it. But Josh is a determined man, he’ll manage to break down her walls.
The chemistry between them was INSANE. I loved their sweet moments, the hilarious ones and those where I wanted to slap some sense into Kristen for keeping Josh at arms’ length. But, apart from this minor annoying fact, I so want this woman to be my friend. She might be fictional, but I couldn’t care less. She’s strong, funny loyal, selfless. And don’t get me started on Josh. I love everything about this man. Ugh— he took such good care of Kristen, he was such a caring friend and such a tender lover. In other words: he is the definition of perfection.
I cried my eyes out during the last couple of characters, and just thinking about some certain events makes me want to cry all over again, so I’m not going to say any more about it.
I laughed out loud so many times while reading this book! What a treat. It was sexy and funny and exactly what I needed.
I found Abby on her hilarious post on FB. The famous exlax one of course! I had snooped on her page and seen she had a book out and also she is in my home state. A famous cupcake artist and the list goes on. I immediately ordered her book on Amazon. I was at my cabin in Northern Mn and wanted to read it ASAP. So Kindle it was. Then after not putting it down at all even to go to the bathroom or eat for that matter. I soaked it all in at once. And then ordered a signed copy not to long after that. This book is so fantastic! I have read it numerous times. Abby is definitely great at everything she puts her heart and soul into. And she is hilarious too! What are you waiting for? Go read it now!! Enjoy!
Wow! This has to be one of the best books I’ve read this year! The characters were relatable, the story didn’t feel stretched or too rushed. I felt a kinship[ with Kristen that I only feel a handful of times with female protagonists. The story was definitely a rollercoaster ride of emotions but I loved it nonetheless! Josh was swoon-worthy and we all need a guy like him in our lives to love. This is a book I won’t stop thinking about for a while!
I devoured this book! So so so good.
Contemporary romance is my favorite genre. This book kept showing up on different lists of books I might like to read. So when I saw it on the shelf at my local library, I decided to give it a try.
I was hooked by the first chapter.
I get the bad-boys are popular in romance (hell, in most books), and if done right, I enjoy these stories. However, I always find it refreshing to read one with a nice man as the main character. And Josh was that, through and through. He gives his heart completely to those he loves.
Josh and Kristen together are fantastic, both as friends and lovers. What kept them apart was valid, believable, and heartbreaking.
I loved the emotional rollercoaster of a ride from this story. It had me in tears from heartbreak and laugher.
I highly recommend this book.
Why did I wait so long to read this incredible book? Oh my goodness!!! I laughed, I cried (ugly cry at that), and cheered!!! Kristen has always had trouble with her uterus. It truly hates her. Now she is facing surgery that will never allow her to have children. Into her life walks Josh. They get along incredibly well and even her dog Stuntman Mike loves him and he hates everyone! Kristen can’t make a life with Josh because he wants a big family and she won’t be able to give him that. I loved Kristen and Josh. The chapters alternate between the two so you get both sides of the story. I loved this incredible story and can’t wait to read The Happy Ever After Playlist!
I loved everything about this book, well almost everything.
I loved the characters. Their flaws, their chemistry, their banter. All gold.
I loved the secondary characters. They added additional emotions including one I wasn’t prepared for.
I loved Kristin’s fertility issues. Sounds funny to say, but kudos to an author writing a romance story and acknowledging her *gasp* period. It seems most romance stories everyone is bonking like bunnies and apparently don’t cycle or even have jobs, so that was refreshing.
The exception. The end tied everything up in a pretty little bow. GAAAAHHHHH!!!! This ending needed to be a bit messy. Everything fell into place and with one slight twist, this book would have easily been a five star.
I did absolutely adore this book and loved 98% of it. I just wish more authors would take that risk and go outside of the cookie cutter happily ever after and sometimes make a “we will get through this together even though it sucks” happily after.
I’m probably going to repeat a lot of the reviews for this book but it can’t be said enough – this was such a good read! I read this book over two days and that says something for a slow reader like me. I couldn’t put it down. I was laughing out loud one minute and in tears another. Even though I respected her views, I honestly wanted to smack Kristen at times. The way the Abby Jimenz conveys the painful battle with infertility was incredibly moving. There was such a roller coaster of feelings in this book. I was so heartbroken at times but couldn’t wait to see how it all ended. Without giving too much away, I do hope the author writes a sequel for one of the other main characters in this book (if you’ve read it, you know who I’m talking about). I want to know how that character’s life turns out.
Two thumbs up and five stars for this book!
The Friend Zone is a different kind of friends-to-lovers romance book. It has all of the elements of a romcom but with some heartbreaking and sad situations mixed in. First, I love dual POV books. I like getting to read the male love interest’s perspective, especially when they are gushing over the leading lady. The Friend Zone is full of sassy banter and both main characters made me laugh out loud. I liked seeing a heroine who is an entrepreneur! The title refers to Kristen keeping Josh in the Friend Zone, but this book has a strong theme of friendship that I really admire.
Now to the things I didn’t like…SPOILER ALERT. I hate to include spoilers, but there’s no way to properly review this book without it. TFZ deals with Kristen’s horrible menstrual cycle and infertility throughout the entire book. I absolutely hated the ending. Although the author includes notes to somewhat explain the written ending, I just didn’t feel it was fair to the many real women who deal with infertility. Also, there is a tragic death in this story. It was hard to celebrate Kristen while also mourning the loss of another character. I do understand that this leads into The Happy Ever After Playlist which I just started and am loving so far. So, I’m kind of split on how I feel about the death in Friend Zone.
Despite what I didn’t like, I still chose to rate this book with 4 stars because I really enjoyed the typical romcom elements of the book. I laughed, sighed and even blushed.
This is a well-written book with all the feels! Humor, Angst, Celebration.
I don’t think I can do justice in writing what this book is about more than what Abby Jimenez wrote at the end of the book, and I quote “… the unify in this story is the feeling of hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, and despair that come with very common health issues, but not often discusses. Kristin HEA was never about getting pregnant, but It was about her allowing herself to be loved, despite what she felt are her shortcomings. It was about recognizing that she wasn’t defined by her ability to have children, and her worth went beyond the state of her uterus.”
Such powerful words that rocked my heart and soul!
Witty and romantic, The Friend Zone was just what the doctor ordered to get me out of a funk. Although a rom-com, this book also deals with real-world issues that make it more solid than your average run of the mill romance. I really enjoyed it!
So, I read this series out of order and read this first book after I read the second one. I’m not sure if that had an effect on my feelings toward this story or if, had I read them in the correct order if I’d like this one more and the second one less. But of course one can read each book as a stand-alone story. They were very similar and formulated exactly the same, which took away a lot of the joy of reading this story because it made it too predictable. Overall, it was a good story, but it does weaken my hope that book three (when it comes out) might be too closely mirrored to the first two.
This is really a 4.5 star review, but half starts aren’t an option.
This story handles a number of sensitive topics (infertility, drunk driving, death, etc.) all within a romantic story of two friends who can’t have each other but really want to. I wasn’t prepared for how sad certain aspects of this story could be, but was so enamored by our two leads, Kristen and Josh (told in dual perspectives, which I love), that this book was still wonderfully enjoyable. The characters are funny and their friendship seems REAL, that you really truly root for them. Sometimes it can be difficult to root for two characters when one of them starts the book in a relationship and the other man isn’t total trash, but it seemed so believable here. My half star dock is because authors really need to GET THE HECK OVER THE “COOL GIRL” ARCHETYPE. Just because a girl “tells it like it is” and “drinks beer” it doesn’t make her different from any other woman or a “unicorn” as this author puts it. LET WOMEN LIKE WHAT THEY LIKE. Remember in The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory when Carlos and Nik happily drink rose together because who gives a sh*t about gender norms? YES. I WANT MORE OF THAT. Do NOT make me feel like I have to drink beer to feel “cool” and “special.” PLEASE ERADICATE THIS ARCHETYPE/TROPE/WHATEVER. Anyway, this was addressed in about three separate paragraphs from the perspective of Josh, and I don’t believe three paragraphs spoils a whole book, so I still give this book 5 (or, 4.5) stars, because I enjoyed it. It made me happy(ish), the writing was good, and the characters were fun. I would recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the sequel.
What a ride! Kristin “cute” meets Josh And there is no straight line for them. Sloan & Brandon’s wedding throws them together and their story is also central. Emotionally dense. Compelling. Believable. Loved it!
Song/s the book brought to mind: Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift
It may have taken me awhile to get to The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez, but it was definitely worth the wait because I absolutely LOVED it!
I decided to do the audio even though I own a copy and I’m really glad I did. Both Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton were fantastic narrators, and I found myself only wanting to listen to them, so I didn’t even read any of my copy. I think they were the perfect people to read Kristen and Josh and they sounded the way I pictured the characters. They were also good to listen to on 2x speed, so I really zipped through it!
I loved the characters in the book, minus Kristen’s mom, and the relationship between Kristen and Josh was a lot of fun. There was a little steam, but nothing I couldn’t handle which is exactly what I like in a romance. I also really appreciated Kristen’s medical issue since I know a few people dealing with infertility. It is a hard topic and I really liked the way the author handled it while shining some light on it.
Also, be prepared to shed some tears! The Friend Zone is most definitely a tear-jerker and at one point I was basically bawling my eyes out. I enjoyed the setting of Minnesota a lot since that’s where I’m from, and the fact that the author is the creator of Nadia Cakes (my FAVE cupcake place) was not lost on me. I was excited when her cupcakes made an appearance in the book!
Basically, if you are looking for a heartwarming, tear-jerker romance that deals with tough issues but makes you laugh out loud, then The Friend Zone is the book for you. It’s definitely getting all the stars from me, and this author is an autobuy for me after just this one book.
3.5 frustrating stars for me! I actually couldn’t put this book down! I soooo wanted this to be a 5 star read! It had so much potential! I just kept reading to see if it would get there. The only reason it’s not a 4/5 star book was because of how long the drama of everything played out. The drama of everything last the majority of the book. I went into this book blind knowing nothing of the story line. I will say I loved Kristen and Josh together! However my issues with this book are with Kristen. I had a hard time with her in the beginning of the book then she redeemed herself and then from the middle to the near end I was screaming JUST LET HIM LOVE YOU ALREADY in my mind! This book had me laughing one minute and needing tissues the next.
This is full on Grey’s and Station 19 mix up that is wonderful full of so much love, drama, laugher, health issues, loss, and more love. This book made me cry and laugh all at the same time, it was so good. I couldn’t stop reading this and so glad I had the day to read it. It is a hard read but still wonderful at the same time.
I loved the characters and the writing so much. This was my first one by Abby and can’t wait for the next one. Sudden death and fertility issues are part of this book, so there are parts that hurt your heart.
Overall, 4.5 stars and 3 steams.
Absolutely loved this love story! Kristen is a snarky smart woman who has been told she needs a hysterectomy at the age of 30-something. Josh is a firefighter who is looking for the right gal to have LOTS of kids with. A fender bender has them meeting and then by happenstance Josh is BFF with her BFF’s fiancé’. It was refreshing to have Josh genuinely LIKE Kristen from the beginning and the fact that he kept it consistently throughout the whole book. Our author Abby needed to have Josh super invested in that relationship and his just say “OKAY” worked perfectly in the end.
Kristen’s angst about her medical issue did get a little stressful for me as a reader – I was yelling just “TELL HIM” mid-way through but I understand that was needed to keep the story going and made the ending and Josh’s reaction so sweet.
The secondary characters were super funny. Shawn (another firefighter) is a jerk – but he has some of the best lines at the most appropriate times in the book. Dick-Jars, Leggings don’t lie, Hoodies on loan – So Good! Kristen’s puppy Stuntman Mike’s pithy dog shirt logos were hilarious like “DOGFATHER.”
–Alert– there is a sad sequence that is pretty gut-wrenching – like ugly crying sad but it actually lends to the story and I think will end up in the next book from Jimenez.
Our heroine Kristen’s “female” medical issue will resonate with lots of women. I personally went thru the exact same issue only later in life. It is a relatable condition that female readers will completely understand. The HEA was tied up in a little bow that may have been a “tad” unbelievable — but it’s a ROMANCE and I loved it!
I was given this book by Estelle at Read-Forever.com while I was attending the Apollycon event in March, 2019. This is my honest review.
