Planning her best friend’’s wedding is bittersweet for Kristen — especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He’’s funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he’‘d be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it’’s harder and harder to keep him at arm’’s length.

I loved this book, it made me laugh out loud and cry the ugly tears. I never saw that twist coming! I can’t wait to read Abby’s next book!
This debut novel certainly lived up to the hype! Abby Jimenez hit it out of the park with The Friend Zone! This story is slow burn, addictive, laugh out loud funny and heart wrenching all wrapped up in a pretty little Josh & Kristen package. These characters are lovable, fun and soooo relatable. I had a hard time tearing myself away. I needed to know how these two got to their happy ending. It’s not an easy journey but it sure was worth the read and I absolutely can not wait for what’s to come.
I was given the option to have a ‘FREE PREVIEW’ of this new book. I loved it so much and could not put it down, so I ran to the library as soon as I finished my preview, so I could finish the story. So worth it. God Bless my local county library!
Josh meets Kristen in a less than stellar way. Then when they meet officially later, they already have to work harder to impress one another. They are mutual friends of a couple who is getting married so there is a lot going on.
Kristen is involved with someone else when she meets Josh, so they are just friends. For now. If ever a chance arises to to take it to another level? Well lets just say there are enough sparks between them to light up Las Vegas.
This was such a witty and fun story. I really could not put it down. I found the characters to be deliciously complex. The heat and heart in the book made it a great read. The pace was steady, and there was plenty of humor too.
***Thanks to Netgalley, and the publisher for the free preview.
The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez is an emotional ride through a best friend’s wedding with a side of magnetic attraction with the best man. Just when you think you’ve figured out where this is going, there’s a bit of a twist.
I can’t believe this book is her debut novel!
It’s a must read!
I fell hard for this book. It’s just so great even with it’s slow burn. There’s so much chemistry between the characters.
Josh and Kristen just sparked from the start. It was so fun reading their chemistry. Josh is one of the best book boyfriends EVER!
I did get a little annoyed with Kristen about 60% in because of the back and forth but I totally understood why which is why this book still gets five stars from me.
The friends in this book help shape the two main characters. I actually liked how the were all written. Just enough to like them but not enough to take away from loving Josh and Kristen.
This book made me laugh and cry! It’s so real and raw and talks about things that so many go through in some way and are embarrassed talking about.
This book was just a great read.
I cannot tell you how much fun I had reading this one! I had a quiet afternoon in a waiting room and sat in the corner and grabbed an extra chair to put my feet up, and power read this from beginning to end and wanted more. I found myself laughing out loud and apologizing over my shoulder to the others around me but who cares! I was deep in a GREAT BOOK with Super-duper characters! Kristen will do anything for her friends and she is planning her best friend’s wedding when she meets the best man, Josh. He is almost more than she can handle at this point in her life with what she is anticipating but his form of sexy/fun may be just what she needs. Will they or won’t they figure out they belong together before they implode. This one is a MUST READ! I highly recommend!!!!
5+ STARS!
One of my favorite books of the year. This story completely captivated me and still hasn’t let me go.
I was terrified to pick this book up. Everyone who I saw read it, absolutely loved it. I get a little wary with hype surrounding books and was worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. I’m so glad it surpassed every expectation I had. I fell in love with these characters, this world, and I’m still in awe that this was the author’s debut novel.
We all know how big of a sucker I am for friends-to-lovers romances and this is my favorite I’ve read this year, and possibly of all time. This story had the perfect mix of a very serious topic and humor, banter, and love. Infidelity is a very deep topic to write about and I applaud the author because she wrote about it with such grace.
Josh and Kristen’s road to romance had my heart aching, my stomach sore from laughing, and my eyes tearing up with sadness and happiness. These two are perfectly imperfect and I fell in love with their relatable personalities right away. Kristen is the perfect heroine. She is strong, determined, and cares about everyone around her more than herself. Oh, and don’t get me started on how perfect Josh is! He is loyal, sweet, caring, and not to mention a hot firefighter! I love them both so much!
I am so happy we will be getting a book two next year set in this same world. I’m not ready to say goodbye to Josh and Kristen and I really hope we get glimpses of them in the next book.
I hope my review portrays how much I love this story. My emotions are still a little all over the place after finishing it and I know this story will stay with me for a long time.
THIS IS A MUST READ!
Grateful to have received a complimentary ARC copy to honestly review.
I’m in love!
Debut Author Abby Jimenez made me fall in love with Kristen & Josh and that lovable doggie!
This book is heartwarming, humor, love, heart wrenching and totally relatable parts to it that it just made me swoon with delight.
The main characters as well as the secondary characters are all memorable.
I felt what Kristen was going through as I read this book and there were times I wanted to shake some sense into her when it came to some of her decisions.
Josh is smart, funny and his feelings toward Kristen had me rooting for him. Also he made me fall in love with him on being there for Kristen even through the struggles.
I overall liked the whole storyline of living life and excepting that you can be friends, lovers and find your happily ever after even when you think you should give up.
Looking forward to reading more from Author Abby Jimenez!

5 popped!
This was a wonderful story! It was funny and sweet, full of emotion, love, and longing plus a nice bit of tension and drama. This had it all! I loved Josh and Kristen meeting, I enjoyed their developing friendship and growing feelings. They had such an ease with one another and fantastic chemistry. I was just excited the entire time and couldn’t wait for them to get their HEA!
My attempt of not feeding into the hype from The Friend Zone goes something like this, *ahem* “Say hello to one of your favourite reads of the year!”
I know, I know, I failed miserably, but I can’t be blamed because I had the best time reading this and feel it’s my duty to shout it from the rooftops. The characters were fantastic, and the humour hit the spot. From Kristen with her snarky, craggy ways to her adorable one of a kind dog, Stuntman Mike.
Kristen’s health concerns brought a more serious element to the story, and the first cracks in the relationship with Josh. Throughout it all Josh was consistent and caring and there wasn’t one thing I didn’t love about him.
The romance tentative and fraught, and the tension served so well in heightening the push and pull between Kristen and Josh. There were casualties along the way but so great was my bias I easily overlooked it.
Although The Friend Zone is Abby’s debut I found myself asking where she has been all my life. I love her voice and humour and am very excited about what Ms Jimenez will deliver to us next.
This book was somehow exactly what I expected it to be, and nothing at all what I was expecting.
How is that even possible?
I expected smart writing, acerbic wit, and engaging storytelling. I got all those things in The Friend Zone. It sucked me in immediately and I loved Kristen’s snarky humor, the hilarious relationship she had with her best friend (Sloan), and her commitment to her no filter style of communication. The meet-cute worked for me. I loved Josh – maybe especially I loved the way Josh smoothed out all of Kristen’s sharp edges. He complemented her in a way that was very satisfying to me.
It wasn’t a perfect read, however. As much as I loved Kristen – as much as I related to her and identified with her (more on that later) – she drove me completely bananas. I wanted to shake her. I sometimes felt like she behaved out of character by applying filters when it came to some of the most important stuff in her life. This heroine takes no prisoners and spares no punches, so the fact that the “conflict” was drawn out for so long and could have been so easily resolved frustrated me and to some extent left me feeling unable to fully invest in her relationship with Josh for a huge part of the story.
I also didn’t love the “triangle”vibes. This seemed to resolve itself as the story moved forward – so I wouldn’t label this a love triangle story – but the vibes were there and I didn’t love that feeling. My die-hard romantic heart didn’t want the distraction or the ache that these vibes caused.
My quibbles aside, one thing I felt like Ms. Jimenez nailed, spot on, was Kristen’s struggle with her female problems, and the infertility storyline. The author acknowledges that this struggle is different for every woman who experiences it, but Kristen’s struggle resonated with me on a deep, deep level. There were so many similarities to my own experiences that even when I wanted to knock her in the head and tell her to snap out of it, I felt her struggle in my bones, because I have lived it. I don’t know, maybe not everyone wants to read a story where the heroine struggles with her girly bits – but as someone who has had to have those conversations, and has lived those challenges – I loved it. I felt like it was captured with sensitivity and authenticity while still allowing my heart to give a hearty swoon over Josh’s easy acceptance and unwavering love as Kristen sorted through her issues.
This story was a lot heavier than I expected it to be. There are certainly moments of lightness and playfulness between Kristen and Josh, but they’re sometimes a bit overshadowed by the sadness and the frustration I felt over the course of the story. The ending was beautiful – worth the struggle to get there and I cried tears of happiness and sorrow as everything came together.
The Friend Zone was a bit of a mixed bag for me, but I genuinely liked it and am overall happy to have taken the time to get to know these characters and I am desperately curious to know what comes next and absolutely on board for more of this smart writing and engaging storytelling. ~ 3.5 Stars
5 stars and all the feels!!!
OMG. What did I just read?
• A fantastically fun friends-to-lovers romance that had me laughing out loud?
• A chemistry-filled love story between a fabulously snarky and sarcastic heroine and a smart-talking, witty, sweetheart hero who is absolutely irresistible?
• A heartaching story of a woman’s battle with infertility?
• A gutwrenching, angsty drama that had me in tears more than once?
Yes! To all of the above.
This stunning debut novel from Abby Jimenez captivated me from start to finish, and I felt everything. What an amazing story!
Kristen is my favourite type of heroine – smart, snarky, sarcastic and completely filterless. She is very matter-of-fact, especially when dealing with her near-debilitating health issues, and is dealing with the realities of an upcoming surgery that will mean that she is not able to have children. On top of all of that, she is preparing for her long-distance boyfriend to return home and move in with her for the first time, is helping to plan the wedding of her best friend in the world, and if her life isn’t complicated enough, it becomes even more so when she meets the best man, Josh.
Josh is new to town and is working as a firefighter/paramedic alongside his best friend, Brandon. When he meets Kristen he is immediately attracted to her, and when he unexpectedly ends up doing some part time work at her house, it pushes the two of them all up in each other’s lives, and the friendship that unfolds is absolutely fantastic. They laugh and banter, they tease and joke, they have everything in common, and it’s all just so easy for them. They become each other’s person, every moment between them is pure gold, and their chemistry just sizzles off the page. But due to Kristen’s relationship, they keep things strictly in the friend-zone.
When their attraction becomes too hard to ignore, they finally reach a point where they can act on it, but there is another huge issue standing in their way – Josh is from a big family with dreams of having one of his own one day. That’s not something Kristen can have with him, and she refuses to stand in the way of his dream. And OMG, it hurt!
Kristen’s battle was so incredibly heartbreaking and my chest actually hurt while I was reading this book. I could understand her decisions, her frustrations, and her heartache, and I was floored by her resilience in the face of such devastation. Did I agree with all of her decisions? No, and the story did become really angsty and there were times I wanted to just shake her, but I’m not in her position and it’s hard to judge what you would do in such a difficult situation, and her perspective on the whole thing is really well written. It becomes especially hard as her and Josh as their world is completely upended and they are left floundering in more ways than one. And there went my heart again, and I sobbed for all that they were going through.
Through the whole story, Josh just shines. He is a man in love who is fighting hard for his girl, and I loved his patience, understanding and acceptance of Kristen through it all. And the romance is just beautiful. It’s easy, natural, fun and playful, and though this book isn’t particularly steamy, you can feel their passion for each other. I fell in mad love with both of these characters and their amazing love story.
I cannot believe that this is a debut novel. The writing is crisp, witty and so freaking emotive! This book took me on a wildly emotional ride, and I laughed and cried and felt so much. It was hard to read in some places and I actually had to put my kindle down just to take a breath and try to deal with the emotion of it all, but it ends beautifully in a really great place, and with stories coming for (at least one of) the amazing side characters, I am so freaking excited to see what Abby Jimenez has in store for us next!
4.5 star
Such a great debut novel.
A Tom com that will make you laugh out loud so much that you’ll disturb the neighbours for sure (especially if you read it at night like I did )
There are always different sides of a story to be told, but I honestly liked Kristen and how she finally let go and lived a bit of her life especially after her away boyfriend broke up with her ( in a message nevertheless) I was rooting for Josh and Kristen , for their acceptance to their feelings towards each other and as nothing is easy in this life, they have to get through a few twists and turns but their happiness will make your heart full.
This book has been one of my anticipated reads for the month and it didn’t disappoint! After reading the first chapter I was hooked. I loved Josh and Kristen so much. Their connection was instantaneous, their chemistry was off the charts and loved their banter in this book.
This story touches on infertility and the struggles some face. Kristen reminded me of my grandmother and mother who both suffered with the same issues as she did. I loved the way it was handled. My heart really aches for Kristen in this story because she feels she isn’t good enough because she can’t have kids and that she’s damaged goods. I loved when she finally let her guard down and let Josh love her fully imperfections and all.
Josh has been added to my book boyfriend list which I don’t take lightly. I loved how he didn’t shy away from the unpleasantness and was there for it all. Josh loved Kristen and never gave up even when it hurt and he was just perfection in this story.
As a long time reader of romance novels, this genre can get stale and Jimenez delivered such a refreshing and realistic read. This book had me all in my feels. I would laugh, smile, shake my head in frustration at the characters and then I was crying as I read. It’s been a long time since I’ve cried while reading a book.
I was in such a book slump and this book knocked it right out! Now I’m in a book hangover. I’ve been seeing a lot of good things about this book and its definitely worth the hype. Make sure to pick up a copy on release day. Jimenez knocked it out of the park with a well written, raw, realistic, heartwarming, debut novel.
A fun and emotional journey through the life of two different people and at the same time so equal Kristen and Josh, Brandon end Sloan. Josh just moved to other city after suffering a disillusioned love and asked to be transferred from his workplace. Still emotionally shaken, he needs to move on and help out in his best friend’s wedding and that’s where he meets the complicated Kristen.
Kristen spent her life tormented by the demands and constants and dissatisfactions of her mother and now also needs to face a situation that will further shake her life. Upon meeting Josh, she is soon attracted to the sweet man but is sure that he deserves a woman without so many imperfections.
A book about losses and struggles that shows us how when true love comes along, we need to face all the challenges.
The characters were great, but I cried like a baby through the last quarter of the book. I don’t really feel the title is the best, but I still loved this.
I have to start with Wow!!! Is this really a debut novel by Abby Jimenez and after reading The Friend Zone I’m predicting a very successful career for this very talented author.
This book has all the feels and emotions you want in a great read, I laughed, I cried and at times I held my breath, it’s certainly a book you will want to read in one sitting so please make sure you have time to get captivated in this romance that’s full of love, passion, humour and lots of emotion.
Fate plays a big hand in getting Josh and Kristen on their journey of love and it’s a journey you will want to join, you will want to meet the loveable characters who have depth and strength and you will want to see how their unique relationship pans out. I highly recommend this friends to lovers romance and I will certainly be following Abby Jimenez’s career. Looking forward to what’s next.
Told in alternating perspectives The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez allows you to get completely into both Josh and Kristen’s heads. By turns this book tore me apart and made me laugh hysterically. Though I am generally not a fan of characters that make decisions for other people, Jimenez drew me far enough into the story and Kristen’s head that I was able to let it go. Jimenez’s debut is heart-wrenching and not for the faint of heart. Those that take the plunge will find it well worth it….just make sure you have the large box of tissues handy and lots of water (hydrate!)
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.
Better Than The Hype!
So, I’m usually really leery of books that have a ton of hype because most of the time I don’t love them as much as everyone else does (which is totally fine, different books work for different people for different reasons). But…THIS. ONE. IS. BETTER. THAN. THE. HYPE!
Josh and Kristen connect immediately and everyone feels it, including the reader, there’s just three little problems: Josh broke up with his last girlfriend because she didn’t want kids, Kristen is about to take steps that make that no longer an option for her, and she has a boyfriend…sort of. So Kristen decides to kill him and her feelings with sarcasm and showing him the real her from the start…too bad he falls hard for the real her and isn’t willing to stay in The Friend Zone.
The explorations of love, friendship, infertility/reproductive issues, loss, self worth, and sacrifice are so beautifully handled that even as your heart is being torn apart, along with the characters’, you’re laughing and smiling and having your faith renewed. Abby Jimenez’s voice and style are so perfect for romance and I can’t wait for more!
I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.
I was given an ARC of this book and voluntarily give my review.
This book has everything a romantic comedy should, a sweet story, hilarious moments, witty banter, but it is also surprisingly real and relatable, with heart wrenching moments that brought tears to my eyes. Abby Jimenez writes about challenging issues that don’t often get a voice in the romance novel world. This might be my favorite book of the year so far. I loved that it took place in my neck of the woods (Burbank, Canoga Park and Los Angeles) I could picture the locations that were mentioned vividly, because I have been there. I also felt that the push and pull between the hero and heroine was realistic. She didn’t fall all over him because he demanded it, she made her own decisions, and they weren’t always the ones the reader wanted her to make, but not once did I roll my eyes and think “That would never happen”…. I take that back, getting from Canoga Park to Malibu during rush hour would definitely take more than 45 minutes 😉
Lastly, without giving away spoilers, I need to say that the Author’s Note at the end of the book was beautiful and caused some tears because I was able to relate to parts of this story very strongly.
I vehemently encourage everyone with a soft spot for love to read this book.
