In our interaction with others, the mind decodes reality with thoughts. We behave differently when we’re alone, with another person or in a group. This behaviour depends on our more or less consolidated character, on our attitude in the positive or negative interpretation of the world and of existence.
Our ego is constantly comparing our self-image with the projection we have of others, according to our reference values scale.
The choice is ours, as is the responsibility for our thoughts, the interpretation of the events that occur around us.
Great book!
So simple – 4 things to follow to instantly surface a better self.
1. Be impeccable with your word.
2. Don’t take anything personally.
3. Don’t make assumptions.
4. Always do your best.
LOVE IT!
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is my favorite non-fiction book! I keep it close. In fact, it’s on my desk right next to me. It’s very grounding and keeps me focused on what’s important. I don’t have a favorite agreement because they are each so important, but I do tend to gravitate toward the agreement, “Be impeccable with your word.” This one agreement alone beautifully highlights the significance of the spoken word.
It gave a very basic view of life and acted like it was profound. It makes you feel good for a little while until you realize like is not that simple.
Boy I was really down and out and then I got to read this book and it all made sense.
WHAT BOOK INSPIRED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
It provides an inspirational code for life, for the way you handle your relationships, how you behave, and how you communicate with others. If you want to change your life, read “The Four Agreements”. This book will show you how to attain a happy fulfilled life.
As much as I love to read, with my busy life I don’t always have time to read a long, involved book. I heard about The Four Agreements a few years ago, and it has sat on my books-to-read list since then. Recently Steven Adler of Guns n’ Roses fame reminded me of it in a podcast interview — it was one of the tools instrumental in helping him on his road to sobriety. I’m so grateful for the reminder. Hearing Adler mention how life changing the book was for him encouraged me to decide it was time to purchase it. It’s a simple, easy read, in fact, I finished it in one Saturday morning while drinking a cup of coffee. And I’m in love with this book! If you like Buddhist writings or the self-help genre, you’ll likely love this book. Author Ruiz outlines the four simple concepts, and why they are important, and how to use them, and I have found myself constantly reminding myself of the agreements whenever I’m faced with a situation where they are useful. It has made me more convicted to examine my decisions, how I deal with others and how I perceive my interactions with others and myself. Great read!
A great friend of mine recommended this book to me around 2001, as we were talking about my business and my philosophy. “The Four Agreements” was completely aligned. I had been using ‘don’t take things personally’ and ‘don’t make assumptions’ in my leadership training courses – but I hadn’t thought of it at this depth.
Don Miguel Ruiz is the most authentic person I’ve met, and this book has changed both my personal and professional life. This is my go-to book.
I have read this book and just finished it a second time as part of my book club. I find I’m reminding myself of the agreements when I get emotionally sucked into situations I don’t want to be in. The book is easy to read, not easy to put into practice. The agreements are definitely spiritual principles I am trying to live by.
What Stuck With Me: The first thing that stood out while reading this was the smoothness and familiarity. There is a familiarity in his writing that makes it that much easier to read. Now, I should admit that this is the first book of its kind I’ve read in almost 15 years. I used to love motivational books as a teenager, certain it would give me the strength to overcome the horror that was my life at the time. I can’t remember it’s title, but for over a year, my constant pocket companion was one of Zig Ziglar’s works I had been gifted. I found out rather early that I couldn’t find peace in them and stopped reading all motivational books and even, biographies and the like. But, a casual acquaintance I was chatting with in 2019 recomended this as it was proof that the questions I was asking at that point of my journey to self-knowledge were not only apt, but very important. If it was massive, I would have lost interest but it was rather small. Wondering how impactful it could possibly be, I plunged in. And my world as I knew it shifted on its axis. This book actually gives you answers and tools needed to re-invent yourself into what you need to be with the ability to love yourself. The description of the wildness of children had me listening to Hey, Child by X Ambassadors on repeat and lightweight that I am, I shed tears as I remembered that there was once a time I had been all joy and energy and love, back before the abuse began. How deep did I fall for this tale? Oh, I have the 4 agreements on the wall in my writing space. Aaaaand, on the wall of my sister’s room. It is just that real!
Verdict? If you are at that point where you’re beginning the scary journey to self-knowledge, you couldn’t find a righter companion!
This book taught a simple yet profound way of looking at life and how we can choose to respond to life. Inspirational!
For those with an open mind to what the world is or can be. Common sense spirituality.
What a change this book has made in my life when I live by these principles. I go back and review them often for when I live by them my life is much better! Easy to read and very helpful simple advice for life!
This is a great book for strengthening your internal spirit. I recommend this book to all of my clients. It’s an easy read and also should be read on a yearly basis to refresh the ideas presented. Great spiritual practice.
I read this book at least once a year and have given away several copies. Very inspirational and simple.
I suggest all my clients read this book and know the four agreements so they can quickly refer to them when they feel like they are in a situation and they have lost their footing. The four agreements help me navigate life, even the hardest moments. A book I will always have on hand!
This is a must read. The concepts help so much in day to day life. Definitely a lifechanging book.
File this under “The book that made me a better person.” I just gave it (lent it! lent it!) to my 20yo daughter and told her The Four Agreements changed my whole perspective and therefore my life. With four simple rules for how to live (be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best), you seriously get rid of all the negative self-talk and all those pesky worries about what OTHER people think (tip: they’re only thinking of themselves) that tends to eat you alive. I reread this every few years, even though at this point it’s ingrained for life. This is a “happily ever after” for you, and for keeps. Highly recommend.
Only Four? yes; there are only four agreements. But trust me, four is enough. It will take all of your dedication and perserverance to remember all four and to follow them. When you are able to do that, your life will have changed forever. You will love and respect who you have become.
It would be great to see this empowering and practical book on school required reading lists. Just buying this book increases your Emotional Intelligence quotient! It also comes in a tiny book format, highlighting each agreement. I shared the pocket book with the teens in my life.
