Elaina Trent, the Marchioness of Hopkins and her husband Tristian have been married for three years. Theirs was a love match and they are now the parents two children, life seems perfect. But today, Elaina and Tristian are having a fight, she wants to go to France to see her dying grandmother, Tristian refuses to even consider a trip because of the war, but Elaina refuses to listen and when Tristian leaves on estate business, she takes the children and leaves. When Tristian returns to find them gone, he is angry, but when his children are returned without Elaina, who was lost at sea, he is heartbroken.
Three years later, Tristian has been trapped into marriage and is forced to have Elaina declared dead. But Elaina is not dead, she is on the island of Alderney suffering from amnesia and on the brink of becoming betrothed herself – that is until Tristian’s brother Harrison finds her and returns her to England.
Tristian is overjoyed at her return and quickly has his marriage cancelled and Elaina’s life restored, while he is doing that Elaina is sent to stay with her brothers – small bits of her memory return and her brother Xavier, a doctor refuses to let anyone tell her anything, insisting that she has to remember in her own time. The problem is Elaina doesn’t remember Tristian or their children at all and even after reading her journals from her life before she married, no memories return, she does however begin to come to know Tristian and thinks she is falling in love with him all over again.
After weeks of staying at her brother’s house, Tristian insists that they return to their home, but for some reason, Elaina is terrified at the prospect. Tristian hopes going home will unleash the memories she can’t seem to grasp, but at the same time, he worries that seeing their children could destroy her.
WARNING – MIGHT BE SPOILERISH!!!
This was a good story, but honestly there were just things that didn’t work – first and foremost, there was a man on the ship that saved her, he heard someone shout her name and his memory was intact – so he obviously knew where the ship was headed – why didn’t anyone try to find her family? Why didn’t Tristian hire investigators? Second, Tristian’s “secret” marriage, it was far-fetched and unbelievable – he was able to have her declared his wife who has been “missing” for three years declared dead in less than a week without any sort of investigation? And then when it turns out his dead wife is not dead – the marriage is just dissolved? Personally, I saw absolutely no point for the marriage to have taken place – betrothed, fine, but the marriage was unnecessary and pushed the limits of believability for no reason, at least nothing that furthered this story. I also found myself getting annoyed with Elaina, she would read something in her journals and then get angry at Tristian about it, it seemed incredibly immature. I thought the writing was good and the story did flow nicely and I liked watching them rediscover each other, but I don’t think I would read it again.

I loved this story.
After being swept overboard in a storm and rescued by the people of Alderney Elaina is left with amnesia. She has absolutely no memories of her past and three years on accepts the proposal of a local man, feeling she has no choice but to continue on with her life. Luckily for all concerned, before the marriage can take place her true identity is discovered and she is returned to her family. However her husband is a total stranger to her and must woo her all over again. Loved all the characters, the sibling relationships and the growing romance between Elaina and Tristan.
There were a few typos, and oddities within the storyline but I was able to overlook them because I was enjoying the story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Well, I have to say I hesitated reading this when I saw that he was married again but thought I would give it a go. If that is holding you back, don’t let it. There is so much more to their story. Beautifully romantic, this book is like nothing I have read before. Each character is beautifully written and described. They all have such unique and interesting personalities. I can’t wait to see who meets up for the next book.
An extremely enchanting story of a second chance romance that nearly did not happen. I loved reading this story. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning. There was an argument, tempers tested, defiance felt, an orchestrated escape. The heroine, Elaina and her two toddler children went to France against her husband (our hero) Tristan’s command she not go during war time. A storm came devoured the ship, she survived but had no memory of who she was or where she was coming from or going to. The one thing she was sure of was her first name, Elaina. I found Elaina’s character to be strong willed with complex emotions and feelings. She is kind and loving, appreciated those around her and accepted her limited housekeeping skills. She realized what she was good at and helped as often as needed. After three years of not remembering, she decided to move on with her life and marry. At a dinner party at her betrothed turned her world upside down. Her real husband’s brother was there, recognized her, reintroduced himself, filled her in with what he remembered that fateful night of the storm aboard the ship. But he was careful not to tell her too much for it may overwhelm her. It did not jog her memory. She felt nothing, nada. She decided to go back to England with him. When she arrived she did not recognize her husband. But when she arrived at her childhood home things started coming back to her. Her four brothers made it more difficult treating her like she was finest china that would break on a whim. They too were holding back telling her anything, even their names. I could identify with her how frustrating that would have been. Over time she gained nothing more from being there. Although Tristan had spent as much time with her as she allowed, he was determined that if she never remembered their life together that they would start anew. He would court her again and woo her. They had their ups and downs but deep in her heart she felt something special for Tristan. When the decision to take her home where she and Tristan lived, she became anxious and fearful. Tristan and all her brothers overrode her not wanting to go. She had a difficult time being there. In the first hours of being there for some reason were traumatic. She ran to the beach with Tristan hot on her heels. A storm was brewing, lightning struck she was wading in the water when all of a sudden she realized why she did not want to remember and she broke down and cried. Tristan pulled her out of the water as the sea was becoming rough and would have taken her down with the currents. Now Tristan’s character was amazingly patient with her. Although from time to time she frustrated him. But that was one of the reasons he loved about her. They did argue from time to time because he was withholding information from her and she knew it. She was tired of the hovering of him and her brothers. Tristan became her confidant while at her childhood home. But now at their home, while pursuing her on the beach, he was as gentle as rain. For she was going through a shock of remembering something so awful so terrible she wished she would die. Tristan proved to her over and over again how he loved her and she saw the evidence of it after they returned to the house and she realized how he never gave up on her while she was lost. He lived believing that one day she would return and now she had. This book takes a good look at dealing with people with amnesia. The hit or miss recommendations that Elaina’s brother the doctor was putting on her and the entire family. I felt for Elaina. It was easy to identify with her struggles to remember and her frustrations. I could even identify with her anger and despair. Tristan had excellent control over his thin patience with Elaina’s brothers. But always, always never lost his patience with her. He was amazing. The love he had for Elaina jumped off the page and his struggle to temper his emotional and physical attachment to her was not easy to keep at bay. One could not help but feel the warmth of his love for Elaina, the depth of his love for her and the willingness to do whatever it took to make her his again. But he knew it had to grow otherwise who knew what the consequences would be. Elaina and Tristan’s characters were well written, realistic and their personalities were well developed. The reading itself was 99% spelling and pronoun error free with excellent proof editing. An extremely satisfying read. There is never a dull moment and if you are like me, will want to read it straight through. It was that good. I highly recommend it and look forward to Jane Charles next book. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Tristan and Elaina were married, in love and had 2 children before Elaina disappeared and believed dead for 3 years. When Elaina was found she lost her memories and does not remember Tristan and her children. This was a nice story of Elaina getting to know Tristan again and finding love. At times I felt sorry for Tristan because he really loved Elaina and he sometimes thought she would never remember him and their love. Jane Charles is such a good author, I was so into this story and all the emotions I was feeling.
I received a copy of this book for an honest no obligation review.
How to recover from losing the woman you love? Trying to go on but never giving up… Then she returns and has no memory of her husband or their life. Will she ever be able to love him again when he has never stopped loving her?
Jane Charles has begun this new series with an amazing tale of the heart and what it can endure when there seems no hope. An emotional tale with a few twist and turns that will pull at your heartstrings. I am not sure who I felt worse for, Elaina or Tristan.
I could not wait to find out what happended and did not stop until the last page was turned. I highly recommend and cannot wait for the next book in this series!!
The Forgotten Marquess is book one in The Other Trents series by Jane Charles. I can’t give it more than a 3 star rating and here’s why. I have never read her previous series called The Tenacious Trents. Since I’ve not read any of the Trent books I found myself completely lost through most of the beginning of the book – the first 9 or so chapters I was floundering. Why not just make this book 11 in the Tenacious Trent series? I think labeling this book first in a series implies that the reader doesn’t need knowledge of previous stories or characters. If this book is meant to begin a new series then I shouldn’t have to go back and read anything else prior to this story. I finally threw in the towel at chapter 19 out of 34. I will probably go back and read The Tenacious Trents series when I have more time. Charles is a good author. I have read Her Muse, Lord Patrick and loved it. I was given a copy of this book.
Such a good story! I think I went through all of the emotions while reading it. Really enjoyed it. I received an ARC of this book.
I felt sorry for Tristan through the first half of the book. He loved his wife and never wanted to give up on her being dead, always having hope! Then when she did come back and didn’t know him, he had to make her fall in love with him all over again! Elaina seemed at times more of a spoiled brat. Berating Tristan for things she had written about in her journals while trying to recover her memory. With her outbursts and temper during their marriage and courtship, she would have been a perfect hot tempered Sicilian. I did like how it was tied in that she had a deep fear of returning to her home, the reasons weren’t exactly what I expected while reading the book! Her brothers seemed a mite over-protective, but I loved how Lucien threw caution to the winds at times! I can’t wait for their stories!
Thank you for the advanced copy, this is well worth the read!

Another story that I found both humorous & heart wrenching & which I was loathe to put down, I read well into the night to finish it. The characters had depth & were very likeable. Tristan & Elaina were both strong characters & I’m sure sparks will fly in their relationship. I also like the secondary characters & hope they also have their HEAs. I also loved how characters from other series made appearances. Elaina’s amnesia was handled very well with her memory gradually returning with her remembering little things.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
She’s lost her memory and he can’t forget. Jane Charles writes a powerful, heart-wrenching story that of a love that knows no bounds and tugs at the heartstrings to the point of breaking but one. And the pivotal moment…threatens to snap the remaining heartstring releasing a flood of emotion. Worth every star rating available times 10.

My review :
How a man will get back his wife’s love when she does not know who he is…
At the beginning of the book I was assailed by a myriad of feelings, angst, sadness, anxiety, frustration, angst at Elaina for causing so much pain, sadness for Tristan and what he went through, anxiety for will they find each other in time, frustration at everyone around her tiptoeing like walking on eggs and many much more sentiments.
The basis of the plot brought to my mind a book I read not so long ago, both husbands remarried but when in Mrs Bree Wolf, the second bride was a victim, and I felt sorry for her, here I confess I didn’t even pitied her, she was the artisan of her own doom until I understood she was too a casualty of Society’s expectations.
At first, I thought the challenge would come from the repudiated wife’s side.
But how wrong I was, it is a story with no vilain, only a man who tries to win back the wife who has forgotten him. Thus begins Tristan’s wooing of his returned wife.
It was a beautiful tale of love from all sides, and the strength of the mind.
Tristan is a wonderful man, he subjects himself to begin all over again his courtship because he can’t imagine a life without Elaina being part of it. At time, it was fun but also sad and painful when he fears she might lost to him.
Elaine has a long way ahead as she learns who she has been, the life she has lived prior to her disappearance, but also who is the man she married, how she came to care for him.
I immersed in their story, sucked by this dramatic tale where the memory or its lack hold back a love to flourish, where good intentions can do more harm than perhaps being blunt.
As my first read by Mrs Jane Charles I was gladly surprised by her talent to bring to life flawed characters, they acted like normal peoples, they make mistake, they ask for forgiveness, I felt like i was in the same room with them, a spectator of a fragment of their life unfolding in front of me.
5 stars
I was granted by the author an advance copy, I already preordered my own.
Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

I am absolutely in love with this story & the captivating characters that Ms Charles conceptualized for her readers to enjoy.
The handsome, kind, honorable Tristan Trent, the Marquess of Hopkins lost his wife to a shipwreck in a storm 3 years ago. His two children were saved but his wife was not found & no clues have ever appeared since the fateful night. However, Tristan still can’t let go & still holds hope for her return until he is caught in a compromising situation with a duke’s daughter & is forced in to a marriage of convenience to save lady’s reputation & his honor.
Lady Elaina Trent & her children were returning back to England after visiting her ailing Grandmother in France, when a storm caused evacuation of the passengers. She managed to get her children & their nannies in a life boat but she lost site of them & in her panic she fell overboard. She finally managed to struggled to the shore of a village & someone found her & cared for her but she no longer knew anything about herself or had any memory of anything in her past.
Three years later someone recognized her, it was her brother-in-law, & after verifying her name, family etc., she was returned to her brother’s estate. This begins the journey of trying to remember her past. Tristan is there when she returns & he is so patient, kind & loving – he is afraid she may never remember him, so he decides to court her & try to win her love again.
I highly recommend this the all historical romance readers – the deep emotions & love was so touching. Bring wine & tissues – but it’s a good thing! I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
