In an elite suburb of New York City, girls are dying. That doesn’t happen in Greenvale, with its immaculate lawns, exclusive yacht clubs and multi-million dollar mansions. But behind its perfect façade, its trimmed hedges and luxury cars, a darkness lies. Girls, dependent on Adderall, outmaneuver each other to get into top colleges, while the mothers’ need to live vicariously only makes it worse.… worse.
Bella DeFranco is one of the Bronx’s top SVU detectives. At only 37, she disarms everyone with her stunning good looks, yet she is as tough as most men—and a lot smarter, too. Yet when is summoned to Greenvale, she finds herself getting lost in a case that even she can’t comprehend. She stumbles into a land of secrets, a place where husbands hide their pasts from their wives, where friends are not what they seem, and where no one wants to know too much. As she digs deeper into layers of suburban dysfunction, she comes to learn that, behind all the fake smiles, there is a subtle violence–rivaling even her crime-ridden streets of the Bronx.
With a killer on the loose, time running out, and a new partner who never recovered from his washed-up alcoholic days, the odds are stacked against Bella. She is determined, though, to save these girls, whatever the cost. Yet as she gets close, the depth of psychosis she discovers shocks even her….

This was my first Alexa Steele book in the Suburban Murder Series, and I’m glad I took the chance. You can’t help but like Bella, and I see her partnership with Mack as developing into a super team. One word near the end of the book opens up the whole mystery, and BOOM solved! Already purchased the second and third in the series.
Learned a bit about the morgue.
I liked the book but it seemed to go on too long. So many sick, shallow people.
interesting concept. great out side the box detectiving, very innovate. kept me turning pages way into the night.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There were some typos, but it didn’t interfere with the storyline.
A child and another person know the secret. To bad this is a story of addiction is so timely now. So sad.
Liked this book very much. The characters were interesting and seemed real. The story was intriguing. The first few pages, I was afraid it was going to be all cursing in which case I would have deleted it. After those pages though, there was very little cursing – little enough to overlook. There was not graphic gore nor sexual scenes. It is …
A truly scary story of life in an upscale neighborhood. Money is everywhere but so is death. Who isn’t what they seem? And could getting into a “good”school really be a reason to kill?
A fast and entertaining read. For a small town, Greenvale sure has a lot going on. First of all, the rich are crazy, but in this story, they are also drug dealers, murderers, and really insane! When Bella and her partner Mack come to town to investigate a murder, they were ready to write the rich housewives of suburbia off as empty-headed and …
The book was different in as it showed
many different life styles from the very rich to unbelievable way that children were abused easy read SAR
Disappointing
Mystery is solved but you have to get the next book to follow the victims next step.
A very good read. I was concerned that this was designated as book 1 of 2, but took the chance that it concluded and was not a cliffhanger. Glad I did. This was a well thought out ploy that moved along well. The police detectives were very human and relatable and I enjoyed the time spent with them
Loved the characters and the twisting plot.
It’s an amazing book! I would highly recommend!!!
what a good story line, loved the female detective with her feelings re rich women & pricey naborhoods, they were so real. both detectives were well written & believable. i’ll watch for more from this author, this was my first read from her.
I loved this book from the beginning! I was hooked and spent every page trying to guess who was the bad guy, who had committed the murders, and I didn’t get it right! Alexa Steel did an amazing job creating this story with twists, turns, and all the information we need to keep us hooked and guessing.
Great read and I will be purchasing The Lost …
Emotionally engaging, spine tingling. Two very different detectives work their way through a wealthy, shallow and destructive town to solve the senseless death of a woman and two teenagers.
I enjoyed the story and liked the development of the woman detective and her partner. It’s sad people raise their children to be shallow.
Good book, I’m planning on reading another story by this author.
