The brand new novel in Bernard Cornwell’s number one bestselling series on the making of England and the fate of his great hero, Uhtred of Bebbanburg.
BBC2’s major TV show THE LAST KINGDOM is based on the first two books in the series.
From the day it was stolen from me I had dreamed of recapturing Bebbanburg. The great fort was built on a rock that was almost an island, it was massive, it … massive, it could only be approached on land by a single narrow track – and it was mine.
Britain is in a state of uneasy peace. Northumbria’s Viking ruler, Sigtryggr, and Mercia’s Saxon Queen Aethelflaed have agreed a truce. And so England’s greatest warrior, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, at last has the chance to take back the home his traitorous uncle stole from him so many years ago – and which his scheming cousin still occupies.
But fate is inexorable and the enemies Uhtred has made and the oaths he has sworn combine to distract him from his dream of recapturing Bebbanburg. New enemies enter into the fight for England’s kingdoms: the redoubtable Constantin of Scotland seizes an opportunity for conquest and leads his armies south. Britain’s precarious peace threatens to turn into a war of annihilation.
But Uhtred is determined that nothing, neither the new enemies nor the old foes who combine against him, will keep him from his birthright. He is the Lord of Bebbanburg, but he will need all the skills he has learned in a lifetime of war to make his dream come true.

Good Book and a Good Series
GOOD READ FOR THOSE WHO LIKE HISTORY BASED FICTION
Quite possibly the best historical fiction writer out there . I read just about everything that he writes
Always a great author and a historical subject that is interesting.
Bernard Cornwell is a master at depicting fiction history and particularly battle scenes. His characters become real and the books are page turners. This book continues the saga of 9th and 10th century England and the struggles between Saxons, Vikings, Welsh, Irish and Scots in the crucible of the formation of England. Highly recommended to all history buffs and particularly to those interested in the Early Medieval Britain.
Not Cornwell’s very best book, but long awaited by all Uhtred fans. A must read!
Another great story by Cornwell
Love all of Bernard Cromwell’s books
This book seemed to tie up a lot of the loose ends in Uhtred’s story. I almost felt that this could have been the end of the saga. However, ‘there’s more to come’, I suppose…not a BAD thing. As always, great battle scenes, wonderful information about the habits, customs and mores of the times.
Great read.
I love Bernard Cornwell!

Love this series. Go Utred!
I’ve read them all and they are all great!!
Mr. Cronwell’s 10-book series, Saxon Tales, is my absolute favorite historical fiction book series. He is a wonderful story teller!
Again Cornwell does not disappoint. Uhtred is a worthy figure to follow through his life. And as he nears the end it of great interest to see if he will finally reach his lifelong ambitions!
Excellent!!
Great addition to the series
The absolute best series of books I ever read. Warning — start at the beginning and read through all ten to this point. Can’t wait for the next installment.
