What the heck did I just read? My mind is blown in the best way possible. I’m not sure what I can write in this review that won’t give anything away. This story was dark amd twisted and so full of secrets I barely knew which way was up. All I will say is this, I loved every single word of this book and you need to read it right now.
This was no ordinary love story this was a messy tangled love between unfortunate souls.
Her love story began when a fifteen year old boy who’d looked across the chain link fence saw a girl sitting on her porch. Her story had a tragic beginning and paints her in a trashy slutty way, yet when you hear her story you’ll soon understand why she behaved the way she does.
Overall:
This was a very sexually explicit story with Rainey trading sex for drugs. The story contains abuse, rape, and violence. It’s graphic. It’s twisted. It’s dark. It’s not for the faint of hearts.
In order to get to the truth you’ll have to endure Rainey’s telling of her story from five years prior. Let me just say it’s a graphic story. Rainey didn’t live a life most could understand. I know I struggled with her choices and the lifestyle, but that’s what made this so appealing. I love the broken ones who seem unworthy.
The Lily voiced Rainey’s character so well that she got under my skin. I couldn’t get her out of my head. I felt every ounce of pain as she delivered each word of abuse.
Lily White has become my new favorite writer/author. Since I read Asylum I couldn’t stop with just that book, so I looked into her other books and found a slew of books I needed to read. Something about her writing style clicks for me. The way she voices her characters is so enthralling and entertaining. Each book is a page turner with unexpected twists and turns.
Lily kept me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. This was a well thought out story and it was executed well. Without a doubt I can recommend this book. I recommend to those who enjoy a dark read without judgment.
This is a good one. So far my favorite by Lily White (I’ve only read a handful of her books).
Morally ambiguous characters abound in this book; some I rooted for more than others. Like the Scars series by Sinden West, there were times this book gave me Gillian Flynn vibes. All these books feature flawed, troubled heroines. The Five starts slow, with a hard-boiled detective tone, but soon turns into a sordid tale of Rainey’s past that leads up to a satisfying finale.
I don’t want to write anything else, except to encourage anyone interested to give this book a try. The writing, plot, pacing, characterization, etc were all top notch. It’s best to not know much before going in.
A dark, psychological suspense novel. Should not be classified as a romance though. Interesting. Couldn’t quite make up my mind about the book the entire time I was reading it though.
Every character in this novel is carefully drawn. Every plot point is meticulously illustrated. I love books like this. The assembly of the characters, setting, mood, plot; everything comes together to tell a haunting story about a girl who never had a chance to be innocent or good. I really don’t want to go into plot. Just know that this book is great. Very dark, non consensual scenes, consensual scenes. If you have triggers, don’t read this one.
Wow! This book is unbelievable! I’ll admit, I went into this book knowing nothing (I just really liked the cover) but what I discovered blew me away. This book is unconventional, raw, dark, gritty, and at times, painful to read. It’s not sick and twisted in a way that other dark romances are. In all actuality, while it is dark and uncomfortable, it’s the psychological scarring that takes place that bothers me the most. I have NEVER read a book like this before. Lily White has stunned me with this page turner. I was continuously devouring this book page by page because I wanted ANSWERS. I wanted to know WHY the “heroine” was the way she was (although really, I already knew) and I wanted to know if it was even possible to save her. Damn! This book took me on a ride and I wanted to let go of the wheel so many times but absolutely couldn’t.
If you plan to read this book I would recommend going in blind. The dark and twisted tales that weaves itself through these pages need to be read without preconceived notions- you’ll really feel this way. But if things like (possible) sex without consent, drug use, prostitution, and things of this nature bother you then you should probably find something else to read.
This book looks at the darker side of love. Love that comes from tragedy and only gets worse from there. Most of the book doesn’t even really FEEL like a love story. But when you get to the end and everything falls into place you will know it was there all along. This book will make you feel a little sleazy when reading it, but not enough to totally turn you off. It’s just an original piece of work that is likely to stay with me for a long time. I HIGHLY recommend it to those who can keep an open mind. It’s an awesome and unique read!
I felt bad for Rainey! Not your typical love story and some potential triggers if you’re worried about that. Lily White is so dang creative! Not sure how she comes up with these storylines. This one takes a bit to build up but it’s worth it.
Wow! The Five took ahold of me and just didn’t let go. It was like watching a scary movie with your hands over your eyes but you need to see what happens next so you keep peeking. You know you shouldn’t keep going but your so captivated that you just can’t stop. It was brilliant but it isn’t for everyone. If you want a wild addicting ride then get a copy and hold on tight!
As a side note It is a dark book and does have some major triggers so be warned ahead of time.
Wow. I’m speechless. What an amazing story. I should have known I’d not be able to read just a few chapters and put the book down. Nope this book took over my afternoon and I loved every minute of it.
This is a twisted dark read that messed with my head. Rainey’s story is unpredictable and I’m sure like most readers it will stay with me for a long time.
If you enjoy a story that will mess with your head then I recommend this dark gem. Yes I’ve got a warped mind and enjoyed every word of this story.
I’m seriously in awe of this author. What goes on in her head I’m not sure but I certainly ain’t complaining. I’m so looking forward to reading more from this unique and very talented author.
I needed to take a huge breath after finishing this book! It was riveting, heartbreaking, and it sucked me right in! Rainey’s interview revealed all the sick, twisted acts she endured by The Five. As much as I felt for her situation, I wondered if she was a victim of her circumstances or whether part of her wanted to keep making those deals with the Connors. This was a tough read, yet at the heart of it all was a little glimmer of hope. Could Rainey Day truly escape the hell that was her life?
The Five by Lily White was an incredible and unpredictable read!
I absolutely adore this author’s books, but she blew me out of the water with this one. It was unpredictable, spine chilling and oftentimes difficult to read.
However, that is what I love about this author, she knows when to push the boundaries just right, and sometimes, completely go over them.
For those who can handle darkness to the max then I would recommend this book AND this author. Absolutely fantastic!
The Five is my first book by this author and holy crap it did not disappoint. I mean I didn’t know what to expect, but seriously she blew this out the park. This story is dark, twisted and all types of fucked up and I loved it.
The mystery and the deaths surrounding Rainey just keep you turning pages. Truly enjoyed this book and i will be reading g more from this author.
5 Stars read!!!!
This is the Lily White that I love! Mindf*ck all the way. It’s Hitchcockian in the mysterious, suspenseful telling of chilling depravity with a hint of romanticism. The brutal realism got me, the misdirection was brilliant, and the nuanced storytelling was a thing of beauty. There’s such a wrongness to the feel of the story that it got under my skin like an itch and I couldn’t put it down until I was scratched raw. What is the five? I hate spoilers so this is going to take a huge effort to formulate a review that doesn’t give anything away. Any hint of where this author is going with her story will ruin it. What characters! Rainey is lush, sympathetic and a wonderful creation. Is she the innocent victim, the knowing Lolita, the crafty mastermind, or all three? As she tells her brutal, cringeworthy story in horrific detail to psychologist, Justin, she appears to switch between personalities and draws him into her life as he tries to help her and uncover clues to the case. Justin appears to be a wonderful hero. His job sucks as he gets so twisted up in Rainey’s story that he is conflicted in his feelings and professional conduct. I’m not even going to start on the Connor men/boys only to say, wow! Never have I read a more whacked out, gross family. Shoutout to Rowan though. So solid and lovable; until he isn’t. There is a romance in the story that’s quite lovely in its own messed up way. The twist had me going between “yeah” and “oh no she didn’t” and the ending blew my mind. I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. I usually have some clue as to where a story is going but not with this one. The fabulous storytelling had me missing the clues. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC. Thanks The Next Step PR!
I have missed Lily’s writing!! The Five is a book that will suck you in from the beginning. It unravels ever so slowly and I wasn’t sure what to think at first. But as the story unfolds, I came to realize the pacing was necessary to set the stage for what is one of her best twisted stories she has written. I thought that I had the story figured out, but in typical Lily White fashion, I found out I didn’t really know anything. I went back and forth on what to think of the characters. Some were irredeemable, some I was on the fence about. I loved that the story was told the way it was. We get Justin’s perspective on Rainey, and Rainey’s perspective on the events that happened. So we got to understand his confusion, attraction, and empathy. Rainey is a paradox of sin and innocence. Is she a product of her environment, or a cunning young woman who took advantage of certain situations? As with most Lily White books, to say any more would spoil the book. If you love psychological twists and turns with your romance, then you need this book.
OMFG!! That was some seriously effed up
sh!t, but Damn what a twisted depraved exhilarating story.
Rainy moves next door to a family of brothers and let’s just say they use her for their own sick perverse agendas. All with the exception of the youngest, he has his own obsession with Rainy that’s different than his brothers.
Justin is assigned Rainys case after a series of murders. He needs to prove this fragile beguiling young woman is innocent and a victim of circumstance.
It becomes clear that Justin is in way over his head when Rainys story unfolds. It’s a tale of Survival, obsession, perversion, lust, debauchery and depravity.
Theres more to this girl than meets the eye but is she a killer?
I was on the edge of my seat for this story. You can’t help but feel for Rainy what she endures is cruel and sadistic.
The story is quite terrifying at times it will suck you in from the beginning and keep you glued to the pages.
All I can say is…..WOW!!! This book is a 5 star read from start to finish, and I can honestly say, I did NOT see that ending coming! Lily White has done it again, with her newest book “The 5”. The author grabs you from the very beginning and holds you hostage with every sick, twisted and deliciously wicked turn of the page. The characters the author creates come to life and she makes you feel as if you are right there, watching the events unfold. I highly recommend this book if you “LOVE” dark, erotic, psychological thrillers. This book is intended for mature readers ONLY, as it involves intense, graphic sexual content (A LOT OF IT)!!!

Have you ever read a book that leaves you excited and mesmerized!! Well The Five did just that!! This phycological thriller had so transfixed on every word that i couldn’t put it down!! I was literally blown away!! Brilliantly written!! Dark and twisted! Freaking phenomenal!!!
Rainey Day (yes that’s her name) has just been a part of a gruesome crime. Waking up with no recollection and now being questioned by the police, she’s now being seen as the victim who got lucky. With the help of a young psychologist who’s been assigned to get more information of what really happened that night, the past and present of Rainey’s life, becomes the main attraction in this circus of twisted plots.
Because this book deals with a lot of content that some might find disturbing or uncomfortable, I will refrain from going into further details in the story. What I will say is that these characters are crazy AF!! From the moment I started reading this, I’ve had a nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach. I put it on the back burner for the first half of the book because I felt like nothing was going to come of it and everything was going to be ok. Boy was I wrong… I knew it, I felt, and I saw the big neon flashing sign but you know what? I had hope. So much that did for me!! Shock does not even to begin to describe the buildup to that ending!!
“You have a lot dead people around you, Rainey.
We all die. Just some of us sooner than others”.
The lengths that some of the characters went through was not only mind boggling at times, but it’s down right scary. I’ve read a lot of stories where the characters have sacrificed a lot for the other, but this was different and I loved that. I angry when certain decisions were made, felt that flicker of pride for a moment, and held my breath for the unknown that was the ending.
If you like your reads twisted, unconventional, with a side of messed up, then this is the one for you! Lily White will have wanting so much more from the minute you’ve read the words “The End”
Oh my goodness I am seriously scratching my head at what I just read. I went into The Five ready for a suspenseful story but wow did Lily White take it to a whole other level. Going between past and present, nothing turned out as it seemed and I was shocked to the point of speechlessness with every new turn of events. This book could have continued on with no end and still I wouldn’t have gotten enough.
Rainey Summer Day, yes that is her name, is moved into a rough neighborhood after her mom gets dumped again and is hoping to start a better life. Little did either know how wrong that would be. Rainey immediately takes up with the neighbors, the Connor family, trading whatever drugs they had for sex because that’s how she believed her body was good for. The abuse going on for so long it was never even a thought process to do something with any of the guys. The only good thing to come of meeting this family was Rowan Connor, who saw through the act and found a goodness in Rainey that no one else saw. A sort of dance started to take place, Rainey wanting to keep Rowan close but at the same time push him away, believing she was nothing and he deserved so much better. Their friendship was special but not enough to make Rainey stop, which only brought about more pain and bad luck to this girl.
Present day brings Justin Redding into the mix, a psychologist to interview Rainey for what she knows of the murder of four friends with her as the survivor. She takes this as an opportunity to tell her whole story, one of so much abuse, heartache, and low self worth, it’s crazy to even fathom how she woke up everyday to continue on with her life. But the story also showed light to many other aspects of the investigation since this was something the police weren’t taking quite serious enough, so it was Justin’s job to make the final call on who did what, something that became harder by the day because although he was very professional, Justin is still just a man and can only handle being pushed so much by Rainey and her desires.
I absolutely loved all the mystery surrounding Rainey and what all went down in the house she found in. I never would have guessed at anything because the writing was just that good. I also loved how equal the storyline was with going between Rainey’s past and everything happening in the now. Lily White kept me on the edge from page one all the way to the end, another jaw dropper but so fitting with how everything else went down. The Five was my first Lily White book and I’m more than impressed with how this author can tell a story. This is one to go into with an open mind but quickly becomes addicting, one I’m sure I’ll be revisiting again and has also left me very eager for more of her stories.
Rainey is a young woman unlike any other character you will read. She hasn’t had an easy life. Justin is a psychologist tasked with interviewing Rainey and getting her story. Watching the story unfold is part of the fun in reading this book. Sex, lies, murder and temptation are all parts of this story. A tale of suspense that will take hold of you and not let go.
