Living on the edge can be murder.Garnet McGee returns to her small Vermont hometown, all set to finish her master’s thesis in psychology, and convinced that the paranormal experiences of recent months are now behind her. Then she stumbles across a body in the strangest of places, and starts getting unsettling visions of the woman’s life and death. Local police assume it was suicide, but Garnet is … police assume it was suicide, but Garnet is sure it was murder.
Egged on by her eccentric mother, Garnet starts investigating. Police Chief Ryan Jackson is intrigued by the “readings” she gets about the case, but others are determined to stop her amateur sleuthing. Meanwhile some inexplicably strange things are happening at home.
Garnet is determined to find out who killed the beautiful woman loved by so many, but that will mean taking the leap into trusting not only others, but also her own growing psychic abilities. Yet every vision puts her in greater danger. As she gets close to discovering the truth, Garnet realizes that the killer will do whatever it takes to keep the truth hidden. Even if that means killing again.
Gripping and unpredictable, The First Time I Fell is a suspenseful and haunting murder mystery with a psychic twist. Makes great reading for fans of Paula Hawkins, Gillian Flynn, Ruth Ware and Liane Moriarty.
This is the second book in the Garnet McGee series that started with The First Time I Died, but can be read as a standalone novel.

“I definitely recommend this series! It might just be among my favorite Adult-audience mystery series, and all of the characters are just so likable. (Except for, y’know, the… murderers). As with the first book, this is a mystery that keeps you guessing, there’s absolutely nothing predictable about it, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a refreshing mystery read!” – Dream With Your Eyes Open Book Blog

“Birth in the physical is death in the spiritual. Death in the physical is birth in the spiritual.” ― Edgar Cayce (1877–1945)
In this, the second of what I hope is a long series, Garnet McGee moves home to house and dog sit while polishing her thesis. While walking the dog, she comes across a body in the quarry. The local police believe suicide, but Garnet’s psychic response is murder, and she sets out to prove it.
Peppered with her hometown locals and a few other characters, this book has a sense of humor while dealing with murder. Her tenacity which was introduced in the first Garnet book (The First Time I Died), and again brilliantly shine here. The story might keep you guessing until the very end, and leaves you craving more.
Well written with great characters: like Garnet’s Mom, this book slides Jo Macgregor’s place in the mystery genre. Highly recommended. 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it]
“The First Time I Fell” is a solid 5 star follow up to Jo MacGregor’s first book, “The First Time I Died”. I loved everything about it. The characters are fabulous, the storyline intriguing…. with a plot that is sure to please readers of many genres.
I adore the main character Garnet, who has captured my heart. She is a sassy little spit fire with a no holds barred attitude. She is strong, independent and fierce. Garnet’s psychic ability really adds an exciting element to the story. Her unique abilities are fascinating and truly amazing.
I eagerly await the next book in this beyond thrilling series. I highly recommend not only this book, but this very talented author to anyone who enjoys stories with that “Wow” factor, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
“I received an advanced copy of this book. I voluntarily reviewed this book and this is my honest review.”
I absolutely loved The First Time I Died, which is the first book in this series, and couldn’t imagine how Jo MacGregor was going to continue this series. She did it though and The First Time I Fell is equally just as amazing.
The best way to describe these books is a younger generation Stephanie Plum meets Ghost Whisperer and some minor hints of iZombie (minus the actual zombies of course). The humor and sass is perfectly on point and if you are a fan of Grandma Mazur you are going to absolutely adore Garnet’s mom. So many times I was left shaking my head due to that woman and her shananigans or inability to keep her mouth shut.
(5 out of 5 stars) What I really love best about this series is Jo MacGregor is a master at smoke screening. In both books I could have sworn I knew who the bad guy was and then next thing I know it’s the last person I suspected. I enjoy the mystery and intrigue this series contains and look forward to continuing this wild ride with Garnet McGee.
First off… that cover is BEAUTIFUL. It was an entertaining suspenseful mystery paranormal story, and kept me guessing at every turn. I knew one character was creepy but had no idea how creepy. And those beauty pageants… wow. That town is a pretty cool town, would love to see what else can happen there. Ooh and that ending… can’t wait to see what comes next.
This is book 2 in the Garnet McGee series. This series is best read in order.
This is the second book in The Garnet McGee series. I loved book 1 so I was excited to read this.
In this book we get more insight into Garnet and find out more about her unique psychic abilities that are growing stronger. They’re becoming harder for her to deny especially with her eccentric Mother urging her to embrace her gift.
Strange things happen when she returns home to Vermont. She discovers a womans body, which triggers a series of visions connected to the victim.
Garnet decides to investigate determined to find the killer. Once again she crosses paths with Police Chief Ryan Jackson who is intrigued and somewhat open minded about her abilities.
The story takes us on a suspenseful murder mystery ride where everyone seems to have something to hide or gain with regards to the woman’s death.
I really enjoyed this story the plot and pace flowed well and kept me on the edge of my seat. The whole who done it aspect kept me guessing throughout.
I’m looking forward to more from this series, I’m hoping to see Garnet and Ryan get closer romantically. I definitely feel a connection there.
I love Garnets crazy mother too, she’s quite a character.
I’m intrigued to see which direction the Author takes with book 3.
Garnet is such a strong character I can’t wait to see her flourish and develop her abilities further.
