Some secrets are best left buried. All Iris ever wanted was to have a peaceful life. Living mostly in solitude, she found joy in helping young girls accept the beauty of song and dance. She never expected her visions, inherited from generation to generation in her family, to take her on a journey where everything she’s known is in question, including her existence. If she is not a human witch, … human witch, then what is she?
Fern spent his entire life trying to do what’s right for his people. The Fae, banished to their own realm, have been slowly dying but agreeing to help the deranged king almost costs him his life. Now he must follow a witch, who isn’t supposed to exist, to the depths of hell. Those like her were hunted down centuries ago. So, why is he willing to do anything, to make sure she stays alive?

Maya Daniels weaves an amazing story, following the Witch, Iris, and the Fae, Fern. Iris has some hidden talents and the Fae need her to use her magic and save the realm. Sparks fly when Iris and Fern, can’t deny their attraction any longer. This story has many twists and turns, I loved the chemistry between Fern and Iris and the final scene in the book is epic.
If you love PNR and mystical realms, then this read is for you. I can’t wait for the next installment of this great series.
The First Secret is the second book in the Hidden Portals Trilogy, and there is no second-book-slump with this little beauty.
This is Fern and Iris’ story, and we are able to catch up with Raphael and Artemis too. I love Iris, and have done from book one. She is sassy, has an attitude, and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself against ‘others’. Fern fights his attraction to Iris, fearing her to be the same as Lazarus. It takes a while, and some ‘advice’ from others, plus a near death experience before he realises he is an ass. And don’t we all love it when that happens?!
Once again, this story is complete by itself, but it does lead you nicely to the next book. As with all Maya Daniels books, there were no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading. I love her world-building, and the characters are just amazing. I am loving this series, and have no hesitation in recommending both the book and the series.

I love how fresh this series has felt to read!
This time we’re following as Iris and Fern try to save the realm from the shadowed threats lurking, but to be able to do that, they’ll have to face their own internal darkness and shadows to discover who they really are ~ not just as individuals but perhaps a whole lot more.
Iris and Fern returned to the Fae world and now this is their story! The second book in the series brings us to Iris, Fern, and another Fae to take a trip into the caves to find The First Secret. Ivy believes that Iris will have the capability of revitalizing the Fae realm. She has the ancient blood line from the prophecy…but what is she? Something happens between Fern and her that only Fern can explain! The secrets she stumbles across can cost someone a life! But, who is the person guarding the secrets that Iris needs? What does he want with her? Will she receive the secret in time to help the Fae? Will Fern and their other companion survive in the caves? What will happen when they return to the castle, or if? This second installment is filled with LOL moments and plenty of snark! It will keep you glued to the pages until you are finished wanting to go onto the next book..but wait we have to wait for that next book! This one ends in a cliffhanger! I received this book as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.
The First Secret is the second book in the Hidden Portal Trilogy. It has a unique storyline, filled with daunting adventures. I enjoyed it, and look forward to reading book three.
