The First Mistake grabs the reader from the first page all the way to the surprising ending. This is a real page turner with twists throughout, strong characters, & a plot that will have the reader shaking their head on every page. Loved this book!
If I could give this more than five stars, I probably would do so! I absolutely loved LOVED loved this book! Sandie Jones is officially an auto buy author for me! First The Other Woman and now The First Mistake—it’s clear this woman knows how to write an unputdownable book!
Intrigued by the story from the first chapter? Check! Three sections with different points of view? Check! Storyline that keeps you going back and forth between what you think could actually be going on? Check!
The jaw dropping twists were so superbly well done that I had to just sit and think about them for a few minutes because they were that brilliant. The main characters had both horrible and redeemable qualities. And I truly had a gamut of emotions throughout this book. There were a few times I nearly cried and my heart was breaking. Other times, I was angry and fed up with some of the things a character had to put up with. And the suspense left me on the edge of my seat! It is rare for me to find a thriller complex enough to do all of that.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It will likely be on the list of my favorites of 2019!
Available June 11th!
I received this ARC from Minotaur Books, I loved her first book and this one if possible I loved even more. I read the whole book in about 2 hours without stopping, the book was fast paced, well written with twists and turns to make you keep thinking about what is going to happen next. Although I had basically figured out the storyline before I finished the book, there was quite a shocker toward the end of the book. If you enjoy suspense/thrillers then you more than likely will enjoy this book I would certainly recommend it to others.
A disturbing read with twist and turns and ups and downs leaving you just as miffed as the women, as they tell their stories and their lives entwine in ways they could not possibly have foreseen. One woman lost the love of her life, leaving her heartbroken and alone with her young daughter. As her mind fractures and she finds herself unable to even do the most basic things she meets a man whilst she is being treated. Years later she is still struggling, but with a husband, two daughters and a business that is going places she is pushing through. Trying to be happy and live. But things happen and she finds herself doubting everything she thought she knew. Her bestfriend has her own story of loss and betrayal that have left her bitter and alone, with a daughter that has no father and desperate for answers she confides in her friend who vows to help her. But life never goes the way you think it will and secrets have a way of coming out no matter what you do to keep them hidden. An interesting story that kept me occupied throughout my day, held my attention and left keep feeling satisfied with it, from start to finish.
The First Mistake is a dramatic little page turner that will have dangling helplessly from the edge of your seat from beginning to end! The story opens with a glimpse into the busy life of Alice, a mother and wife that appears to be handling all of life’s challenges to the best of her abilities. Between her growing business, and raising her children with her second husband Nathan, she stays busy from sun up to sun down. But she is about to find out that her life isn’t quite as “handled” as she thought, people around her are keeping secrets, and her best friend Beth might not be as friendly as she once appeared.
As things begin to unravel she begins to see that putting her trust in those around her may have been her biggest mistake, and it leads her second guess the relationships she has formed. She is certain someone has it out for her, but when you can trust those around you where do you turn?
I really enjoyed this one, it was riddled with thrilling action, unpredictable twists and turns, and high stakes drama that kept me captivated the whole way through! Another outstanding tale from Ms. Jones!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
This was a fast-paced and enjoyable thriller. This is the first book I’ve read by Sandi Jones. Alice’s husband Nathan lives in the shadow of her first husband Tom. Alice has two great kids, a loving husband, and a successful career- so why does she feel like something is wrong. Fiona’s best friend Beth has always been there for her. When things start to unravel, will Beth help Fiona discover the truth or is she hiding something herself. Thanks to Minotaur books for the ARC of this book and the chance to review it!
Book Review: (ARC) The First Mistake by author, Sandie Jones
I was truly drawn too this story. A thriller, not my usual genre of choice, but intrigued as to its possibilities based on description.
An interesting, intertwining story, with a slow start, that unfortunately left me a bit discouraged. I had trouble connecting with the characters, but decided to forge ahead.
As the story built, clues and other tidbits of information became something I had almost expected, which unfortunately flattened the narrative for me, personally.
A decent thriller, and for the most part, entertaining, but too little was made known to the reader of the characters themselves, and I feel that had the backstory been given more depth and substance, this book may have been a good fit for me.
I thank Monotaur Books for the gift of this ARC so that I may read, and review, honestly.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book! I loved the author’s first book, The Other Woman, and her second book is just as amazing.
There are twists, and turns, and then more twists. And just when you think you’ve figured it all out, there are more shocking twists. This is literally a sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat story that has you gasping as you frantically turn the pages to see what will happen next.
The author has done a fabulous job of developing the characters, drawing you into their lives, and making you feel invested in their story. She has woven a web of deception that has you guessing, making assumptions, and when you close the book you will sit back, take a deep breath, and wonder what just happened.
I can’t wait for Sandie Jones to write her next gift to readers!
This book started out pretty slow. It took me forever to get into it, so much so that I had reread some pages to get an idea what was going on. About halfway through the book it picked up and I didn’t want to put it down. But then the ending! I’m so confused, I don’t know exactly what happened. This is the second book in a row that had a terrible unsatisfying ending. I received the book as an advanced reading copy by mail. It is a beautiful cover, but I much prefer an e-book to a physical book. It had such small print and it is a big book, that won’t fit into my purse. I know they wanted the real physical books in peoples hands to generate social media excited with the beautiful cover. I think that is a great idea. But I just can’t go out to social media now and recommend the book. I have passed it along to a coworker to see what she thinks of it.
Alice, a successful interior designer, and single Mom, marries Nathan, after being windowed for a number of years. Her former husband, Tom had died in an accident.
After being married for a while, she begins to think that Nathan is being unfaithful, and begins to distrust him. She confides in her friend, Beth. But, can she trust Beth either?
The book was a thrilling book, I had thought I had the ending all figured out, but there was a twist, I did not see coming at all!! I won’t reveal the twist, as you will have to read it to see. 😉
** I will be honest, I almost gave up on this book, as I felt the beginning was dragging, and it took a while to get to the good stuff, and I am glad I held out, as I really enjoyed this psychological thriller, and if you like a book that leaves you surprised you will love this one!!
Thanks so much to @MinotaurBooks @StMartinsPress for sending me this ARC. Love getting #BookMail . The book will be releasing June 11!
Psychological thrillers are some of my favorite books! In the past I have read The Other Woman by Sandie Jones, recommended by Reese’s book club. I was so excited to see the release of The First Mistake. The immediate suspense and fantastic writing will suck you in from the very beginning. So many clues imbedded in the plot of this book, including twists and turns have you trying to figure out how this amazing story ends. Highly recommended, Sandie Jones has me hooked!
The First Mistake by Sandie Jones
I received an Advanced Copy of The First Mistake by Sandie Jones and am thrilled that I did. What a great read! Twists and turns that I never expected. Things happening to different characters that I never would have guessed. Sandi Jones definitely kept my interest as I followed the story.
First we are introduced to Alice, a woman who lost her first husband and is seemingly doing very well with her second one. Then we meet Beth, who quickly becomes Alice’s dear friend. But, is all as it seems to be? Is Beth truly the dear friend she seems to be? Should Alice really trust her?
Relationships are never easy; even the most precious ones have their problems. Sandi Jones weaves an intriguing tale of relationships; those between husband and wife and those between best friends.
This is the second novel for journalist Sandi Jones. I hope there are many more to come.

A fun read! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2810283057
Oh my, reading this book is a roller coaster of a ride. I thought it started off a little on the slow side but it soon picked up and never let down until a very surprising ending. The author did an excellent job connecting all the dots of the different story lines that were going on. I highly recommend unputdownable book to anyone who loves a good thriller. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this great book that I really enjoyed.
This was my first read for Sandie Jones and holy wow, it was a doozy! A grieving widow meets a new man and seemingly has the picture perfect life until her husband starts doing a bunch of things that has Alice questioning everything she knows. Turning to her best friend Beth is second nature for her, but before long, she starts questioning her friendship with someone she thought she knew and could trust.
There’s plenty of twists and turns in this story and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. I wasn’t really a fan of the three main characters, especially Alice because of the things she does and says, but ultimately this is her story and just because I would have done a ton of things differently than she did shouldn’t take away from a gripping story told by Ms. Jones.
There are some things that occur that I predicted early on in the plot and other things that I didn’t see coming at all. The pacing of the story dragged in a few places for me and sped too quickly in others, and the story came to an abrupt ending which was kind of vague and left me with wanting more, but overall for my first Sandie Jones book, I was entertained and plan to go back now and get a copy of her first book, The Other Woman.
Thank you to Minotaur books for an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
A well-crafted spun of deceit
Alice has spent the last nine years mourning the loss of her husband Tom—and wrenched with guilt not giving her new husband, Nathan the credit he deserves. Nathan was her knight on a white horse. The man who stood by her side. And the father of her youngest daughter. Nathan has been the perfect husband, perfect father to her girls, and perfect business partner.
Alice’s best friend Beth suffers from trust issues when a love affair left her pregnant and financially betrayed. Nine years later, Beth’s daughter wants to know her who father was. But when Beth reveals the story to Alice, of how she met him and who he was, their friendship will suffer.
With Beth’s revelation of her daughter’s father, the betrayals are only stacking when Alice suspects Nathan is having an affair. But the trails run cold and Nathan has a plausible answer for everything. Alice wants to believe Nathan, especially with a million-dollar-deal on the table. And once again, Nathan has proved himself worthy, and Alice is ready to go all-in and let go of her resolve until Beth has more to reveal.
Sandie Jones has perfectly spun this novel with every trick in the book. Never at one moment think this story is predictable. Right up until the last word. A serious page-turner. Thank you to Minotaur Books for the Advance Readers Edition.
For those of you waiting for new releases to add to your beach reads list this summer, don’t forget to list this book! A fast paced, page turner, that is over before you know it, with twists and turns you won’t see coming. Domestic suspense at its best!
Meet Alice, the wife and Nathan, her husband, enjoying each day of life together, raising a family, getting ready for a huge work project, that could change their whole future. Alice has worked hard to move on with her life after the death of her first husband Tom and through the years has grown close to her best friend, Beth. Beth helps Alice through the tough times as every great friend does. Beth will do anything not to be around the house or participate in events if she might run into Nathan. One day while Alice is going along a normal day, she finds an earring in Nathan’s car. As she pays closer attention to his day to day activities she finds more and more of Nathan’s activities causing her to believe he may not be the husband she’s always believed him to be. Told through the eyes of Alice and through the eyes of Beth, you will feel uncomfortable and wonder what the truth is and how the future is going to unfold. Readers won’t know who to trust and this story will have you wondering until the last word, on the last page.
Thank you Minotaur Books and St Martin’s Press for the chance to read an early release in exchange for my honest opinion!
This is the best psychological thriller I’ve read in ages, I couldn’t put it down. It was twisted and scary, and trying to visualize an ending was impossible.
Sandie Jones writes a web of deception that rivals the best, as she tells the story of Alice, who lost her husband in a tragic ski accident. After bottoming out in her grief she meets Nathan, the perfect guy to get her back on her feet and running her profitable company. He’s a great husband and father, and they build a wonderful life together.
This author is a great storyteller, with great character development, giving you a fun and likable cast. She skillfully brings you along as the secrets, lies and deceit become apparent, resulting in an ending that blindsides. This is a must read, or that would be the second mistake.

I was guessing at who The First Mistake was from the first few pages. Several twists and turns keep you guessing up until the end. Quite a ride in how in all comes together while you’re saying “wait, what…how … hmmmmm…oh yeh” all in one breath. A lot of my suspicions panned out; but I couldn’t put it together, which is good from a reading standpoint. I like to be surprised! Thanks to Minotaur Books and St. Martins Press for the ARC
Sadie Jones has done it again!!! Edge of your seat reading!! I loved every twist and turn that this book took me on and was not able to put it down till the very end!! A MUST READ
