This is the first I have read from this author. I normally really enjoy domestic thrillers but for some reason, other than the fact I figure out the twist very early on, this one did not hold my attention very well and I found myself laying it down to do other things.
I was torn with what to rate this and finally decided on 3 stars because the book is very well written but the story just wasn’t for me this time. I will definitely give the author another chance and look for to seeing what she gives us in the future.
Thanks to Minotaur Books for the advanced copy.
If you like a book that is filled with secrets, plot twist and turns, and an emotional rise then this book is for you. Definitely for you if you loved The Other Woman.
This is the story of Alice. She loses her first husband in a skiing accident. When she meets Nathan she finally feels like she can start to move on. Her and Nathan eventually marry. They have a daughter. They start a small business together. Things are also going well with her Bff Beth. They share alot with each other. One day Alice has doubts in Nathan’s fidelity. She finds a lone earring in the car. She also finds hotel bill with couples massages. And finds mysterious text messages. She confides in Beth. Beth begins to seem off. Is Beth the other woman? Is Nathan really having an affair?
The only reason I’m not giving this 5 stars is because for me it started off a little slow. But around 25-30% it started to pick up for me.
If you loved her book The Other Woman you will definitely like this one.
WOW!! This book was such a page turner with twists at the end that I definitely did not expect! Sandie Jones is one of my new favorite authors! Great book!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.
This is my second book I’ve read by Sandie Jones and it’s obvious she is a talented psychological thriller/mystery/suspense writer. She takes characters that seem normal at first notice, but then turns us all around until those same people leave us questioning everything about them.
I found The First Mistake a quick and fast paced read. It was tantalizing. At the beginning, I wasn’t sure where she was going to take our seemingly successful couple, Alice and Nathan. They seemed quite normal. 2 kids, a nice house, successful business and a wonderful marriage. What could possibly be wrong with this scenario? We are then introduced to a few side and past characters. We learn more of Alice’s first husband, Tom and what happened to him and their marriage. Her friend Beth, who’s daughter is best friends with Alice’s youngest daughter. Then, just to mess with us, the author decides to write a section in Beth’s POV. Why do we need to hear about her past? How well do we know any of these people and what mistake is going to be made on who we trust??
The characters, the setting and the development of their story to lead us to the end was nicely paced. It was more rapid fire and easy to read as opposed to being drawn out. I enjoyed that a bit.
Although I did figure out the twist rather early on, I was still turning those pages quite quickly to see if I was right and where she was going to take us. The lies all the characters told made me want to hate everyone. Yet, here I was pulling for some when I know I shouldn’t. I didn’t get all of the twists right away, so I was still left in shock with certain aspects, but I loved the way it ended. Some may not, but I am one to think in the brilliancy of being left with a question.
You will enjoy this if you enjoy a domestic thriller. No one is who they appear to be. Or are they?
I absolutely LOVED this authors first book The Other Woman and I was excited to dive into The First Mistake. I read this book in one sitting. It is fast paced, with twists and turns, I had no clue what was going to happen next, and I love that! The characters were complex with a well crafted storyline. There was a shocking twist at the end that blew me away. Great psychological thriller by a fantastic author.
I did not read much on the plot of this book ahead of time so went in a bit blind. I found myself a little lost through the first 2 chapters but then wow…just wow… this book took on the speed of a freight train and never stopped.
There were twists throughout that you NEVER see coming…I even had to go back a page a couple of times because I could not believe what I was reading! I could not tell who was lying, who to believe and where on earth the story was going (in the best possible way) until the very end.
Lots of twists and thrills throughout will have you up way past your bedtime! Fabulous read and I highly recommend! Thank you to NetGalley. the author and publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this book. It’s the first time I’ve read this author and I’ll be adding her to my list to keep an eye on. This was a fairly quick read and held my interest. The mystery was handled well and while it didn’t take a genius to figure it out it was still very entertaining. I liked the characters even though I felt like Alice was a little gullible. All in all, a good book.
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher and voluntarily chose to review it.
Are you ready for a series of reveals that would be at home on the soapiest soap opera? Then this book is for you. Towards the end I really had to suspend my disbelief as everybody’s secrets were revealed.
The story of Alice and her friendship with Beth, and her marriage to Nathan. The book is divided into 3 parts. Part 1 and 3 are told from Alice’s point of view. Part 2 is a flashback told from Beth’s point of view. I really enjoyed Beth’s story. It made her a much more sympathetic character.
The book is well written and the plot is compelling. Once I started reading, I was drawn into the story and wanted to see what would happen next.
I received a free ARC from the publisher and the author in exchange for my honest review.
Alice has survived the death of her first husband and found love again in Nathan, her second husband. She has everything she could possibly want, a successful business, a beautiful house, her children grown. Life is good for Alice, even her best friend Beth has been there for her through it all. But when her husband, Nathan starts acting strangely she turns to Beth to see if she can find out what the problem is. After a while, Alice is beginning to wonder if that wasn’t a big mistake on her part. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from Minotour Books.
Alice has had a rough time of it. Her husband died in a skiing accident leaving her with a small daughter. She has been battling depression ever since. She met Nathan, had another daughter and life is good. The business she owns is profitable and she has her best friend Beth. Beth is a single mom, and hasn’t had it so well. Then when a shocking secret comes out that affects Not only Alice, but also Nathan and Beth, Alice has to some hard choices to make.
Sorry to make the description so cryptic, but I didn’t want to spoil a single thing for you. This book was SO good. I could not put it down. It had so many twists in it… every time I thought I had something figured out, a new twist was thrown in. I highly recommend this book!
I was intrigued by this story. Alice’s first husband has died, and she is forging a new life with her children and her present husband, Nathan. She is also a successful interior designer, and owner of a company As Alice narrates her story and the decisions, she made that ultimately brought her to this place
in her life. I learned about Alice her first husband and her present husband. My main thought was, how can someone keep making bad choices? While Alice was a likable character, she was also frustrating because she kept making poor decisions .
There was a subplot with Alice’s friend Beth which collides for a twist I didn’t see coming.
Received a copy of this book on Net Galley as an ARC for an honest review. Sandie Jones has written a tale of lies and deceit. Alice and Beth are good friends who enjoy a night out together. Their girls are even good friends at school. The two women don’t keep secrets…. until they release they DO! Alice has worked hard to rebuild her life after the deviating loss of her husband Tom while he is on a ski weekend with friends. Nathan arrives in her life and they begin to build a future life together and work to build a business. As Alice works to rebuild her life she can’t help but remain suspicious of Nathan’s love for her family and his faithfulness. As the plot twists and turns the reader becomes aware life is not as it seems. Maybe Nathan is not totally faithful.
Interesting read. I will look for more from this author
This book was an absolutely page turner. This is my second book by Sandie Jones. The first one was The Other Woman which was fantastic but in this book, The First Mistake Sandie Jones has outdid herself. As you know from the blurb, about Alice and what happened to her and then there is this supposed best friend who definitely has another agenda. As the book progresses, you begin to understand more when you get to Beth’s story. This book has more twists and turns and intrigue and suspense which keeps one reading to the finish. I do not want to give away any spoilers but even in the last chapter there is another twist. I highly recommend this book if you love psychological thrillers. Bravo to Sandie Jones on a terrific, page turning book and thanks to net galley for this ARC I received for an honest review.
Another book that took me by surprise! I had read this author’s other book and it was really good so I was hoping this one would be too. It was just as good!! I really enjoyed the story. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy
Sandie Jones hooks you from the very first Chapter. Her characters are realistic. I love the twists and turns Sandie incorporates into her books. Just when you think you have it all figured out-wham! A twist that knocks you on your booty!
I have also read The Other Woman by Sandie, it us also an excellent read. I’m am not so patiently waiting for Sandie to release another book or two!
Thank you #Netgalley and publishers for the early advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow!! I started this book thinking I’d get a few chapters in before I went to bed. Well 32% in and I had to finally put it away only to wake up early and finish the book!! This is a quick read that would make it great for a day the pool or beach this summer. You’re so caught up in Alice and Beth that you think you know how the book is going to go and then bam it’s not what you think. Those last few chapters have you flipping the pages just to see how it’s all going to end. I didn’t see the plots and twists the author wrote but it makes for such great suspense you’ll be so engaged in the story. Alice, a widower, who remarries is a mother of two with a successful business.. Beth, a single mother and best friend to Alice is determined to find answers she needs for her daughter. Suddenly Nathan who is married to Alice has her questioning his actions. Soon the doubts and Beth’s suspicions take its toll on Alice and the journey for answers begins!
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review. This is the second book I’ve read by Sandie Jones, it did not disappoint. This thriller had me staying up late and waking up early to finish it. I loved the twists and turns and the so many “I wonders”. I truly enjoyed this book, will be recommending to friends and family once it’s published. This is a must read!
Alice is an interior designer with 2 children. The oldest child’s father died and Alice had a nervous breakdown. Nathan her second husband fathered her second child. Alice and Nathan have a good marriage although Alice still has a fair amount of difficulties. Beth is Alice’s only friend. She’s a single mom who has started the search for her baby daddy.
This is a fast read and I read it in one sitting. I enjoyed the book until the end. I really don’t why the author ended it with a hanging story.
Although not unique and very similar to many other domestic thrillers it was a good read. This book is well-written and the author has you always wanting more. If you enjoyed books such as Gone Girl and books by author BA Paris, then you will like Sandie Jones. I am anxious to read her previous novel, The Other Woman.
I really enjoyed the book. It started out as a nice story of love in a second marriage. But then trust is questioned and things change quickly. The ending was a complete surprise, I had not figured it out.
