Very Entertaining Read!
I thoroughly enjoyed finding out about Rob Frost’s exploits. The story was very entertaining and witty. I recommend that you pick up a copy and give the series a whirl!
Meh.
Delightful tale of murder and mayhem. Rob Frost definitely knows how to fall into questionable circumstances. Reminds me a lot of Maxwell Smart. Hopefully this is only the beginning of his story as it is also tied to the Holly Winter series. It was enjoyable reading but leaves many more options for future stories. I hope that you find is as delightful as I did.
I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest review.
Not the usual cosy, with its creepy beginning, which I am used to by author Ruby Loren. Intriguing and different. I was given a free ARC by the author. My review is freely and honestly given
“The First Frost” A Rob Frost Mystery earns 5/5 Spades for Digging…Delightful and Entertaining!
I am a fan of Ruby Loren’s work, but for me this is the first book in her four-book Holly Winter series. I was not disappointed. It’s short, at less than 100 pages, but it’s not short on entertainment. Although I prefer the “I” perspective, Ruby did well keeping me engaged with an entertaining third-person narrative that allowed me to shadow the search and enjoy the descriptions of London. A well-written prequel centers around a riddle found in a very old book that sends Rob Frost on a search, digging holes in various locations, seeking “the secret key they left behind.” He had been obsessed with something he read as a child, and not deterred by everyone’s response that it was all a work of fiction. But someone else is digging…someone else is searching for the “truth.” Ok, a big WOW!
I’ve been looking forward to reading the prequel to the Holly Winter mysteries since I first learned it was coming. Rob Frost is hilarious! This is a great series and I highly recommend the entire series including this prequel.
I received this free from the author and am voluntarily providing an honest review.
I love the Holly Winter books, and it was a real treat to read the prequel to the series.
Ruby Loren is one of my favourite cozy mystery authors, and this book was another winner.
I love this book… a story full of twists and fun!
Wonderful characters and fast packed actions.
If you love mystery this book it is for you!
I was delighted to read The First Frost, the prequel to the Holly Winter mysteries. Wow – there is a lot of action packed into this dynamic, fast paced short story. This plot is very well written and I could not put it down. I am not going to do any spoilers, but I will highly recommend you read this book.
Great Holly Winter Series Prequel
This book is the prequel to the Holly Winter Mysteries series. The book lays all of the groundwork for the series as well as giving background on a few of the characters. Now I want to go an read the series again! I was given this book for free and this is my honest review.
Rob Frost reminds of a very bumbling Columbo. He either has very good luck or he is smart than he appears to be. Not quite sure yet. Will need more stories to tell. The ending definitely left me hanging.
However, I felt I was missing something. He talks about how he had a defining moment in his childhood. It is referred to a couple of times but what was it and how does it change everything?
This book reads really quick and fast. Can be read in a day.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
A fast-paced, prequel with twists and turns and which ties some loose ends and questions to a back-story to Rob Frost. He wants to be a great detective and is absolutely fun to follow. Ruby writes fantastic descriptions to create a movie in your mind as you read! It shows how he meets Felicity and decides to trust her in his quest since hers is the same. This story opens with Rob on his quest to find the key to a lost civilization he has sought to find his whole life. In this crazy search he digs a hole where he thinks clues lead him only to fall into a tunnel and with the police on his tail, he races through the tunnel only to come upon a group of thieves stealing gold bars. When the police catch up, he pretends he found and caught these thieves and turns them over to the police, only to get away himself. When while looking for his “answer” he stumbles upon a murder – can he dig himself out of this one? A great prequel to the Holly Winter Series, with lots of red-herrings and twists and turns you try to work out the mystery with lots of laughs, but you are kept guessing until the end. Highly recommended. I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I am a real fan of Ruby Loren’s work, she consistently produces very high quality ‘cosy’ mysteries, but in a wide range of styles. I hadn’t read any of the Rob Frost series until the author kindly sent me an advance copy of this book, and it really whet my appetite for the rest of the series.
Rob is a great character, he is engaged in a search for a lost civilisation, which he mainly hunts for by digging up lost artefacts, he has an almost psychic ability to choose the right place to dig. I also liked the rather mysterious character of Felicity.
This is a fast-paced, exciting story, with lots of twists and turns, betrayals and conspiracies, but still keeping it ‘cosy’.
If I do have a criticism, it is that it is quite short, the story is motoring along nicely, when rather frustratingly it just ends, presumably to lead in to the first book of the series proper.
Nothing like searching for clues for a ritual secret organization, and facing scrutiny by officers of the Queen! All in a day’s work – or several days and nights! Rob Frost might be a wiz at finding and interpreting clues, but apparently he is less gifted with women. A fun romp!
A very intriguing book. I really enjoyed reading this book. Gives you insight into the series.
The First Frost, Prequel – I read the rest of the series first, then out came the prequel. I found it intriguing since I was clueless about the storyline. Frost has a Pink Panther type personality and the story if full of dry humor. The story became very interesting with Felicity’s appearance. The is a good intro to the series and sets up Snowed In With Death, book one of the Holly Winters series. I contacted the author to review her books ages ago. 4*
Holly Winters books 1-4 5* Ms. Loren re-edited this series.
Snowed In With Death #1 – Just so silly, it’s funny. A humorous whodunit filled with the egos of six private detectives and a young female amateur sleuth. Even with the disdainful PIs present, the young woman shows them up. Just perfect for a few minutes of humor filled relaxation. 5*
A Fatal Frost #2 – Two stories in one. This book picks up where Snowed In With Death stops. The perfect breakfast opens the story! Another well written, quick murder mystery with our two characters from SIWD. The plot was interesting and kept the reader’s attention; great for a lunch break or a few moments of relaxation. I contacted the author to review her books after reading the ones I had in my Amazon library. 5*
Murder Beneath the Mistletoe #3 – An interesting story, a little more substantial than the first two books in this series. The characters are interesting, although one disappears without really knowing what’s up with him. The ending is kinda cool, which of course is where the next book picks up. 5*
Winter’s Last Victim #4 – Picks up where Murder Beneath the Mistletoe stopped. These four stories are related in more than one way. Interesting plot, the same good and bad character types and a new member to Holly’s “gang”. Plenty of humor, along with a couple of surprises. 5*
Holly Winters books 1-4 end.
The First Frost was an exciting fast paced read. I can’t wait to read more Rob Frost adventures.
