The #1 New York Times–bestselling author introduces readers to “a great detective, a detective’s detective,” New York cop Edward X. Delaney (Kirkus Reviews). New York Police Department Captain Edward Delaney is called to the scene of a brutal murder. A Brooklyn councilman was struck from behind, the back of his skull punctured and crushed with an unknown weapon. The victim wasn’t robbed, and … The victim wasn’t robbed, and there’s no known motive. The commissioner appoints Delaney to head up a clandestine task force, but soon this effort ignites an internecine war of departmental backstabbing. Distracted by the serious illness of his wife, Barbara, Delaney begins his secret investigation. Then the killer claims another victim—slain in the exact same way, leaving the strange puncture wound. As more young men are found murdered, Delaney starts putting the pieces together. Soon, he’s faced with a cop’s dilemma: He knows who the killer is, but the man is untouchable. That’s when Delaney lays a trap to bring a monster to justice . . .

I love all the Deadly Sin books and even though they’re a bit dated now, the wonderful characters stand out. If you like hard-boiled detectives and crime-solving you won’t be disappointed starting this series.
A man whose life has been previously bland but for his mountain-climbing hobby finds his calling in life: random murders. And the police detective opposing him tries to discover his identity from the thinnest of clues. The titular sin? Pride.
I didn’t care for the opening–I hadn’t heard of the book, and I was worried the whole thing would be …
One of the best books ever
Boring with unnecessary details
I am mixed on this book. I loved the parts that involved the police captain who did the investigation, including the process he went through to identify and find the killer; however, the killer was a perverted individual who engaged in sickening practices that almost made me put it down. An excellent crime novel on one hand, a sickening display of …
Out-dated!
I read this book for the first time when I was 17 and it was unlike anything I had read before. I managed to read the 600 page book in one day. When I saw it on Bookbub, I decided to reread it to see if it was as good as I remembered. Overall, the story has held up well but some aspects of it are dated, particularly with technology. The …
I lost myself in the case, finishing the book (in one sitting) at 3 in the morning.
I read this book years ago and I plan to read it again now that I have it on my nook.
Love every one of the books in this series ~
Overall I enjoyed this book, however, I felt that the ending was drawn out a little unnecessarily. Overall this book was a very good read. Recommend to all.
I am a huge Archie McNally fan, this book (part of a different series) was a disappointment. I absolutely could not get into this book. I finished it, but it was a struggle .
I read this years ago. Scary.
I have read all his books, enjoyed them as much second time
Found it very disturbing and not what I was expecting.
It started out good but the ending was anti climatic.
I bought this book because I like different police characters. That held true for the Captain in this book. I hope to read more books about him. BUT…
half the book was written in the ‘voice’ of the murderer the Captain is chasing, and he is so depraved and unrealistic and gag-worthy that half the book was wasted on me. I loved the police …
A true classic. Very powerfully written.
Simple answer here…..I read the hardcover book decades ago…..it was such a keeper that I ordered it for my Kindle the first time I saw its availability. I can’t give a better recommendation that that.
I loved all 3 of the Deadly Sins books.
