When Mitch McDeere signed on with Bendini, Lambert & Locke of Memphis, he thought that he and his beautiful wife, Abby, were on their way. The firm leased him a BMW, paid off his school loans, arranged a mortgage, and hired the McDeeres a decorator. Mitch should have remembered what his brother Ray–doing fifteen years in a Tennessee jail–already knew: You never get nothing for nothing. Now … the FBI has the lowdown on Mitch’s firm and needs his help. Mitch is caught between a rock and a hard place, with no choice–if he wants to live.

I read this when it first came out, and I still remember reading it to this day. A truly unforgettable page-turner story.
This is a very good book if you are a Grisham fan. I would not put it quite up there with The Client, which was for me maybe his best book, but it is a very good read.
This is my favorite book of all time (just behind Gone with the Wind)! So suspenseful and wonderful characters. This book made me a life time Grisham fan. One of those “the book is so much better than the movie” books. Everyone should give it a try.
A great story by a master
This was definitely one of John Grisham’s best books.
One of Grisham’s finest works, and the one that made him a known author, even though A Time to Kill came first. Read the book and then watch the movie with Tom Cruise as Mitch.
Awesome Awesome book. 6 stars
One of the first of his that I read and it gave me an appetite to read more by him. He is a great author and I like his colorful writing and the excitement in his books. I highly recommend this.

Suspenseful
Great read
Wow!!! This is a fantastic read!
Love all his books!!!!!
One of my all time favorites!
Read A Time to Kill after this, which is better.
Absolutely great ! But the movie ending was better.
Excellent book. This was the first John Grisham book I read and it certainly made me look for other books written by him. Exciting and unpredictable plots.
One of the best books I ever read which turned me on to John Grisham
This was a page turner, and a little scary. Much like Stepford Wives it kind of made you wonder if this is really happening.
i believe i would have liked the book better witha differnet ending. The case was interesting and characters were good, but i thought the author should have omitted the girl. It seemed liek she was added to make the book longer and rush the ending with a “and they rode off into the sunset”. ending.
The start of something big.
