When Mitch McDeere signed on with Bendini, Lambert & Locke of Memphis, he thought that he and his beautiful wife, Abby, were on their way. The firm leased him a BMW, paid off his school loans, arranged a mortgage, and hired the McDeeres a decorator. Mitch should have remembered what his brother Ray–doing fifteen years in a Tennessee jail–already knew: You never get nothing for nothing. Now … the FBI has the lowdown on Mitch’s firm and needs his help. Mitch is caught between a rock and a hard place, with no choice–if he wants to live.

Still, Grisham’s best.
Loved the drama and suspense in this book more than the movie even. A must read.
Excellent, early Grisham. can’t put down, must read
I read this while traveling with my husband on our honeymoon. I couldn’t put it down… but obviously I did because we are celebrating our 27th anniversary. The characters stuck with me so deeply that I’m still mad at the main character. You’ll have to read it yourself to find out why.
Grisham is always good. This is no exception.
One of his best. A terrific story.
fun but not memorable
A little formulaic, but so much fun to curl up with.
If Grisham could figure out how to end a book he’d be a really good writer.
I actually liked the movie ending better than the ending of the book.
This was my first John Grisham book and I couldn’t put it down. Great characters, great plot and well written. A perfect legal thriller!
Simply great writer!
Read this almost non-stop many years ago. It’s great
Loved it!
This is one of my all-time favorite books as well as movies. It’s such a clever plot. It moves so quickly. You’re totally on the side of the hero and want so badly for everything to turn out well for him. Just plain great writing
Typical Grisham book with a compelling story line and great characters.
This was a great book and makes you think how often does this happen?
Kept me reading when I wanted to go to sleep!
Outstanding!
You must not miss any work by John Grisham who is a unique author of our generation. Great experience to read.
