NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The fifth book in Diana Gabaldon’s acclaimed Outlander saga, the basis for the Starz original series. Don’t miss the new Outlander novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, available November 23! “A grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries].”—CNN The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie …
The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser’s wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy—a time-traveler’s certain knowledge.
Born in the year of Our Lord 1918, Claire Randall served England as a nurse on the battlefields of World War II, and in the aftermath of peace found fresh conflicts when she walked through a cleftstone on the Scottish Highlands and found herself an outlander, an English lady in a place where no lady should be, in a time—1743—when the only English in Scotland were the officers and men of King George’s army.
Now wife, mother, and surgeon, Claire is still an outlander, out of place, and out of time, but now, by choice, linked by love to her only anchor—Jamie Fraser. Her unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past; her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead—or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.

I love this series. The narrator’s command of the voices is such that I know who is speaking without the character having to be identified. I love the look into life in colonial America, how everyday people lived without modern conveniences.
The two main social events — the gathering at the beginning and the wedding –did drag on a bit. The story loops back in places and picks up characters and events we “met” in the first four installments. Delightful.
The books and tv series are the besr
Outlander series…they are all wonderful.
The book is #5 in the Outlander series. As with all of the books in the series, The Fiery Cross is well written, scrupulously researched and treats readers with a rich tapestry of characters and story.
Though I have read these books since the beginning, I had not listened to this one. It is even more wonderful on audio! History is a favorite subject and Ms. Gabaldon is one of the best writers of early American history. I feel like I am going through it all right along with the characters. Best historical series ever!
Great writing and story line
This is the best book series I’ve read. The first time I picked up one of her books, it was the Drums of Autumn that had just come out. I began reading it when I discovered it was the third book. I purchased the first book so I would know more about the characters and I have been hooked since. Wonderful descriptions of the time, place, and characters. A lot research goes into the story telling. It is amazing how well written the books are. If you choose to read it, give yourself time to discover all that that is taking place.
I loved all the Outlander series until I got to this one. In fact, I still haven’t read the 6th book because this one was so bad.
The saga of Claire and Jamie just keeps getting better and better. Particularly heartbreaking.
All of the novels in this book series starting with Outlander/Cross Stitch are wonderful. The author is a master story telling and she really draws you into the story so that you actually feel as though you are a part of the story.
This is my favorite book series. Read this book you won’t be disappointed.
Best Series EVER
I love the entire Outlander series.
The Outlander series is a wonderfully original story that never fails to completely entertain!
Amazing. Everything Diana Gabaldon writes is incredible!!!
Excellent writing and editing throughout the entire series. Waiting less patiently for the next installment…I realize many people are fans of the Outlander Starz series, but seriously, read the books, they are better.
Adventure
It’s taken me more years than I care to admit to get through this fifth book in The Outlander series and I honestly don’t know why. Maybe because I read them all in a row and the monotony of day to day life in colonial America got to boring. I don’t really know. But I felt I kick in my backside with the start of the next season of Outlander right around the corner and felt I must know what happens before it watch it on TV!
And so I have braved it again and found that I am more than ready for the next few as well! There may be a lot of the day to day living, but there is plenty of action, intrigue, love, bravery, war, terror and of course the nitty-gritty of life. I shed a few tears and by the last few chapters was so invested I’m finding it hard to go back to reading anything but Jamie and Claire, Brianna and Roger and all their neighbors and loved ones. It’s a beautiful and intense tale of love that supercedes time and space and is worth every sacrifice. I can’t get enough and I am again, very glad I decided to go back and try again. A book unfinished is a life not fully lived and I almost made the mistake. Thank you to the author for this amazing world and the stories I have lived whilst reading it.
Love how the author incorporated history.
Love all these books, hate when they end
