The False Mirror by Dana V. Moison is the second in the Sharon Davis detective series, but it works good as a standalone!
What it’s about: NYPD homicide detective Sharon Davis is back investigating the death of an escort girl that had some very high profile clients. The death looks like a drug overdose gone wrong, but is it possible she was murdered? At the same time in Oklahoma, sixteen-year-old Becky’s life is ripped apart when she comes home to a missing father, a brother who has been shot, and a dead mother. She makes her way to New York where she believes the grandmother she has never met is living. Becky and Sharon’s lives will intersect in the most interesting ways in this fast-paced novel that is a bit romance and full on detective fiction.
As I said earlier, this is the second book to a series, but it does completely fine as a standalone. I have not read Dark Illusion which is the first book in the series, but I had no issues understanding what was going on. There are a handful of references to the detective’s first case, but nothing that gave it away for me so if you started with book 2 and went back you shouldn’t have a problem.
I loved how fast-paced this book is, and I read it in just over 3 hours so this can obviously be read in one sitting. There is a lot of action, and the romance wasn’t overwhelming which is something I really appreciated since it didn’t overpower the mystery. I thought the way that Moison tied the two stories together (Sharon and Becky) was pretty genius and it made The False Mirror even more interesting. There is a tiny bit of gore so if you are squeamish at all you might have to skip a couple parts, but it wasn’t anything too crazy.
Really the only thing that brought the rating down for me was I thought overall the book was a bit wordy, and also overly descriptive when it came to describing characters. I kept reading how beautiful Sharon Davis is and it did start to get a bit old. Other than that, I was glad how descriptive everything else was because it really set the scene for me, and the complexity of the story really kept me going. There was even a shocking ending that I totally wasn’t expecting.
Final Thought: I love detective fiction and if you do too (along with a dash of romance) I would definitely recommend checking out The False Mirror. There is even some material about art which I really enjoyed. I finished around 1 AM and had to look up the artist Moison talked about and it was completely fascinating. Bottom line, yes I DO recommend this book!

different storyline with a little insight into the witness protection ramifications and family issues,
Great Mystery
Quit reading after 20 pages. Typical woman’s whodunit which I avoid. I wish I knew Dana is female, I wouldn’t have started reading the book.
