Cryptic clues left at the … clues left at the scenes–obscure bible verses, odd symbols–have the police stumped.
Amos Decker and his FBI colleague Alex Jamison are in Baronville visiting Alex’s sister and her family. It’s a bleak place: a former mill and mining town with a crumbling economy and rampant opioid addiction. Decker has only been there a few hours when he stumbles on a horrific double murder scene.
Then the next killing hits sickeningly close to home. And with the lives of people he cares about suddenly hanging in the balance, Decker begins to realize that the recent string of deaths may be only one small piece of a much larger scheme–with consequences that will reach far beyond Baronville.
Decker, with his singular talents, may be the only one who can crack this bizarre case. Only this time–when one mistake could cost him everything–Decker finds that his previously infallible memory may not be so trustworthy after all…

I love Amos. This book is about a small western Pennsylvania town that has fallen on hard times. But a new fulfillment center has come to town, offering good paying jobs. Thing is, most of the applicants can’t pass a drug screen. Opioid addiction seems to be the local passtime. People are dropping like flies.
Decker and Jamison are visiting her sister, Amber, and Decker finds two bodies. He has to get involved. He finds out this is not the first murders in Baronville. There have been four others.
The only living heir of the original founder of the town is arrested for the murders, but Decker thinks something else is going on.
Good read.
Baldacci always writes good books. This one is the latest in his ‘Memory Man’ series, starring a former cop/NFL player/FBI consultant named Amos Decker, and his partner, Alex Jamison. They’re visiting Alex’s sister in a tapped out town called Baronville in western Pennsylvania. It’s supposed to be a vacation, but then bodies start piling up and Amos just has to get involved. A good read.
I just completed reading this fourth book in the Amos Decker series. Each one is better than the last. This time Amos isn’t sure if he’s losing some of the abilities caused by his brain injury. Even on vacation he and Alex get involved with catching the bad guys. David Baldacci is an excellent author that captures your attention from the very beginning. Exceptionally written and definitely fits into what’s happening right now. I had a hard time putting it down. Looking forward to whatever he has in store for Amos and Alex in the next book.
Another story about The Memory Man Amos Decker. Wish the character would get with it and finally cement a relationship with Alex Jamison. This story is about a crime they just happen upon and it leads the reader through a few twists and turns. A side of Decker is seen this time as he interacts with Alex’s niece. Good read.
Even when Decker’s off-duty he manages to find a new case to work. Decker and Jamison are a great team. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
An enjoyable read with quite a convoluted plot and very likable characters.
The story takes place while Decker is on vacation with his work partner, Jamieson’s family in a small town they recently moved to. The first night two dead bodies are discovered in a neighboring house. The plot is complex with two main threads, a rumored fortune hidden in the town’s founder’s house and a large number of families collecting huge insurance payouts following drug overdoses. The two come together in a great finale.
A long book, it mostly held my interest but there were a few times the read seemed to drag.
My one niggle is occasionally the author doubts his reader and feels a need to explain things a reasonably attentive reader would have already worked out themselves.
Overall, an intriguing, twisty read I recommend to thriller fans.
Baldacci continues to be the wiz that consistently plants his work on the best seller lists. The Fallen is no exception. The characters are vivid and worthy of caring about. The action moves. Nicely done! –Chris Malburg, author
David Baldacci never let’s me down. I can count on him for a great story. Besides a compelling read, there was some informative insight into the opioid crisis.
Very reminiscent of the first novel in the Amos Decker series. He has got himself a good mystery, It seems even on vacation, fate calls on him to solve a towns deep dark issues that shock everyone to their core.
The Fallen is the fourth book in David Baldacci’s Memory Man series. FBI agents Amos Decker and Alex Jamison are on vacation visiting Jamison’s sister in Baronville, Pennsylvania. Decker and Jamison are soon involved in a murder investigation in the small town. Cryptic bible verses are left at the scene and the local authorities are at a loss. When Jamison’s brother-in-law is murdered on his daughter’s 6th birthday, it touches Decker who lost his father at a young age. A wonderfully written work with a great ending. Be prepared for the little six-year-old to tug at your heart.
Oh my! I love the Memory Man (Amos Decker) series! Once again, thank you to a friend for introducing me to this series. I have enjoyed David Baldacci books for several years, but this is one of my favorite series.
Amos Decker is unique…for many reasons. But he always manages to figure out what is going on behind the scenes. And even if he’s not on a case, he will find something that drags him into the middle of a mystery. And this book finds a humane, caring side of Decker that you don’t usually see. And he is just a teddy bear while protecting the family of a partner.
I am hoping Baldacci continues the story of Amos Decker and his unique medical condition. I am hooked!
Another great Baldacci book!
The Amos Decker series is one of my favorites!
All of David baldacci’s books are excellent
One of my favorite authors
Mr. Baldacci has again caused me to lose sleep. I read before bed and had difficulty putting the book aside to go to sleep. The night I finished the book, the little hand on the clock was pointing to the 3. If this is the first time reading Baldacci, go back the first book in the series.
Amos Decker is back in the fourth installment in David Baldacci’s series. And in The Fallen, he is supposed to be enjoying a brief vacation with his partner, Alex Jamison, spending time with her sister who has just moved to the depressed town of Baronville. A former bustling center of industry where the Baron family ran mills and mines in which the local residents toiled, Baronville is in the grips of America’s opioid crisis. Unemployment is at staggeringly high rates, but a local fulfullment center where Alex’s brother-in-law is employed represents the town’s chance for economic revival. At the top of the hill stands the dilapidated Baron mansion in which the surviving son, John, quietly resides. Reviled by his Baron’s citizens because his family’s excesses, failures, and haughty treatment of generations of Baronville residents, John is, like most in the town, just hoping to eek out a living sufficient get by. When Amos inadvertently witnesses activity in the house adjacent to Alex’s sister’s, he springs into action, unable to ignore his intuition and training. He — and Jamison — quickly find themselves embroiled in a murder investigation, as well as the targets of the criminals who do not want them to discover what is really happening in Baronville. Fast-paced and full of Baldacci’s signature, frequently shocking plot twists, The Fallen also takes readers deeper into the heart and soul of Amos Decker. Alex has a young niece whose life is inalterably impacted by the events unfolding in Baronville, and his interactions with her dredge up the pain Amos carries about his own family’s demise. Baldacci allows readers to understand Amos better through heartbreakingly tender moments with the little girl. Once again, readers will fnd themselves thoroughly satisfied with the story’s resolutions and anxious to read the next book in the Amos Decker “Memory Man” series.
Thanks to NetGalley for an Adavance Reader’s Copy of the book!
Amos Decker is a well-developed entity who continues to improve.
Keeps you interested in what is going to happen.
I have become a bit addicted to Amos Decker. He is unique among the genre of “flawed” protagonists I enjoy. His relationship with the world has evolved a bit in this novel. I look forward to the next one.
