The Eye of the World is EASILY one of the greatest fantasy works ever written! Action packed pages, amazing character development, and a world carefully created and thought out makes a deeply immersing novel. Most of the book, while having several exciting moments, leads up to the last 50-100 pages, which, combined, create the greatest page-turning climax that I have ever written. And the system of magic is explained, but also has mysterious aspects that make the reader thirsting for more.
The main characters are just flawed enough to make the reader sympathize. The characters’ thoughts are worries that we all have, and thus make them relatable. The magic users are believable and remarkably human, instead of larger-than-life beings.
The world has been built with thoughtfulness. Lore abounds and is interwoven in the writing in a way that brings knowledge without making the reader feel that he is receiving a history lesson.
Of course, there are some parts of the book that are uneventful, and mostly discussion, but this is integral to character development and overall plot progression. The reader receives much needed information from these times, which benefits later climactic moments. Additionally, the powerful and beautiful language makes the reader content at any moment in the book.
The enemy is larger-than-life and creates a respectful fear. Smaller enemies provide entertainment while the anticipation for the battle with the main antagonist abounds.
The renown for Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time is very, very much justified by his outstanding writing. The Eye of the World is one of my most favorite books, and my love for it will never fade.
Great book that will keep you guessing at what will happen next.
I’m excited to be rereading the Wheel of Time books, by Robert Jordan, after hearing that Amazon and Sony Pictures are adapting the series to TV in the near future! I read the first book, The Eye of the World, in 1994 when I was pregnant with my first child. It’s an amazing fantasy story with all the right elements–wonderful characters, a believable fantasy world and a lot of suspense. I’ve read all the books in the series, except for the last installment, which I’m saving until after I revisit all the previous books. Granted, I’m a little worried about how TV will portray the much loved series, especially after HBO’s rushed final season of Game of Thrones, but I’m more than willing to enthusiastically give the show a try. Rereading an epic and expansive series like the Wheel of time is like returning to favorite haunt or hanging out with old friends! I’m thoroughly enjoying the journey all over again!
Best fantasy series
This book started me on a journey of becoming an avid reader
I loved the whole series and this is the book that started it all. If you are a fantasy geek, this has everything you are looking for.
Book 1 of an excellent epic fantasy series that I’ve enjoyed reading multiple times.
I know I’m late to the game when it comes to The Wheel of Time series, but for those of you who haven’t read it, I guarantee it’s worth the time. At least for the first book. I have heard the story meanders a bit in later books, but right now, I’m hooked. High stakes, action and adventure, immersive world, likable characters, a mysterious magic system… I really loved everything about The Eye of the World.
Loved Jordan’s work.
Great book and series!
Incredible series that started great and kept getting better. All I can say is that each book was finished with me left wanting more. Sadly Robert Jordan’s death (RIP) necessitated Brandon Sanderson to complete the series and Jordan’s vision for this world.
Not a “light” read. Greatly written, and very entertaining.
If only he hadn’t felt he had to go on forever (which he did – dying before the books could be finished)
Perhaps it’s not that original to recommend the first book in one of the best-loved series in all of fantasy literature, but I feel compelled to do so. I spent the year of 2018 reading the entire Wheel of Time series, and I can’t help but recommend it to any fantasy readers who haven’t picked it up yet.
The series as a whole starts out powerfully with this book. The next several installments are a thrilling ride. There will be some books in the middle that might make you doubt your decision to read so many thousands of pages. But when you make it to the conclusion, it’s hard not to be impressed by the journey you just took.
This book, by itself, is also impressive. Filled with wonderful world-building and fascinating action, it’s a book that satisfies and launches the reader on a truly epic journey.
Read this awhile back on the recommendation of a friend, but for some reason never moved on to the rest of the series. Might have to look into it again thru more mature eyes…
It is a long involved series but well worth the read
Really well written. I’m looking forward to the tv show
Awsome book. One of the best books I have read.
One of my all-time favorite fantasy, this the first book was simply outstanding.
Couldn’t wait for the next book…
