I really, really like this book(first of a series). I have the books and the audio cd. Settle down and dive in. You’ll love this book.
Think of this as a revision to Lord of the Rings, an updated and massively expansive revision.
best fantasy ever
I love this book! Rand is a great, reluctant hero. He is relatable and real. Jordan is part of a handful of fantasy authors who have changed the genre for all those who follow, contributing to the realm of what I call “realistic fantasy.” The mythic is not as prevalent as the real, which takes the story and draws it in tighter, gripping the reader even tighter. There are still clear comparisons with Tolkien, a female Gandalf-like character, etc., but allows the reader to see inside what Tolkien shrouded in legend. Highly recommended!
Absolutely loved this series!!! Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a gripping story!
This is a long series with lots of characters but it is worth the time. Women are the magic users and men are not allowed to practice since a man comes along every so often who can literally crack the world with his magic. People who like complex, interwoven, stories and subplots will love it while everyone else will find a character they identify with and stick with it just to see where that character goes.
My go to series. Have read the entire series at least 5 times.
I read the whole series, it took half way through the first book to become intrigued. This is the epic that got me into sci-fi – fantasy, and generally back into reading for pleasure and stress relief. Towards the end of the Robert Jordan books it began to slow down and become a bit redundant. Unfortunately Mr. Jordan passed away. Brandon Sanderson came in and completed the last several books. Fantastic job, may be the best finishing book of an epic series I ever read.
This is probably one of the best fantasy series ever written. If it was half as long I gave it only 3 stars because over that last 25 years I have tried 3 times to read it all the way through. I can’t do it. It’s just too dang long! Half way through I quit caring what happens.
The Best Epic Fantasy Series
This series was written when there was no internet, or cable tv. There wasn’t as much to do then as there is today. The world was a much slower pace.
So, climbing into a book, and sinking into this new world was much, much easier to do, because there really wasn’t much else to do.
Eye of the World, is a very slow paced book. It’s sort of slice of life style writing. The author takes his time, and gives lots of detail, really trying to build his world in your mind.
In today’s fast pace world, it’s really hard to appreciate this style of writing. You really need to slow yourself down.
Really try to put yourself into this world, into the shoes of every character. Look at this world through their eyes.
The way I see this series, it has like 6 main characters.
If you take your time, and read the book, I think you’ll really enjoy it as well.
A powerful and well thought out fantasy novel. One of my all time favorite series! Strong characters, interesting plot, and a whole host of potential and twists await!
The book enjoyed by my husband and I. The characters were very interesting. They interact with each other to make the story move along.
I would recommend this book with a couple of cautions. First, I have mostly given up the fantasy genre, to a certain extent because of this series. Second, back when I was reading fantasy, the first three books were quite good, and came to a satisfying conclusion. The problem is that the author decided to keep writing, and they lost focus by about book 6 or 7. I finally gave up after book 10. My advice would be read the first 3 and call it a series.
Grew up reading this series. Can’t recommend it more! So glad Sanderson finished it for us.
I can see why people like this series much more now compared to book 0. Book 1 feels like a much better story, and did a much better job at making me want to keep reading the series. But I can’t help but have many issues with the book, but might still keep reading the series. So lets go with the stuff I really didn’t like about the book first.
* The Length: Wow was this book long, and I’m kinda confused as to why it was so long. I don’t feel like what happened in the book took up as many pages as it had. With most of the pages being filled with descriptions of people and places and just kinda random stuff. I realized I kinda skimmed over many portions cause I just kinda lost interest in what it was saying. And reaching the end of a chapter and thinking about how that entire chapter is essentially just setup for future books and events feels kinda pointless at the moment.
* The Characters: I found so many of the characters just kinda annoying and obnoxious. As a whole I felt the characters almost played a lesser part in the story than the world itself, given they were almost going places just to let everyone know about the history of the world and who is who. Which I feel really hurt the characters purpose.
* Heroes?: I guess that is the best way to say my issue, everyone is somebody special, why? I can understand wanting a “Chosen One” who will be the hero to save the world. But by the end of the book, every single person on this trip is somebody who will be amazing or have some massive purpose in the world. I wouldn’t have many issues with it if other non-story characters were also popping up as special, but they don’t. It feels like somebody decided that everybody in this tiny village is going to have some amazing secret, or incredible backstory so they can have a role in the larger story.
* The Ending: What the heck was that ending. What happened, did he realize he had written 800 pages and was running out of space that he could use? All these words, and the final battle is some nonsensical mess that happens in a single chapter. It took me a couple rereads just to fully understand anything that happened in it at all because of how sudden and unexplained it was.
Now for some stuff that a did like about the book real quick. Cause no it isn’t all negatives at all.
* Page Turner: Despite everything, I kept wanting to read the next page and learn what was going to happen next. It kept me interested the whole way through and constantly wanting to learn more.
* World: I can definitely see why everybody says this is one of his strong points. The world was incredible well set up and detailed. Those 800 pages went fully into exploring every little bit he could at the time, and I can see how one book could fill many wiki pages. And just descriptive detail of buildings and places could let you build entire paintings in full detail.
Overall I would have to say I have mixed feelings about the book in total. While I dislike many things, I still want to keep reading the series. And probably will in a short while after reading some other things to mix it up. I feel like I will have to wait for book 2 or even 3 to make a serious decision about reading the full series.
This is a great first novel. It is part of a long series that is very uneven.
But this is a great beginning to the series. Great novels usually have an ensemble that comes together. In this book, every member of the ensemble is memorable and engaging. They are loyal, brave, and learning together.
An enjoyable page-turner.
This book brought me into a world reminiscent of medieval legends, and magick. Expertly told with enough detail, that I could picture everything in my mind. I couldn’t wait to read the next book!
This is the first book in an amazing series. It is up in the top 3 of my favorite series I have read so far. Every re-read you still find more things that you didn’t notice before. The characters are so real and show flaws that make them relatable even with all the fantasy elements involved. Read it, I promise you, you will keep thinking about it until you pick up the next one. And the cycle continues.
One of my all-time favorite series. The details and characters draw you into the story — it only gets better after this book.
Enter the world of Taveren (spelling might not be right) where three young men from a small out of the way village have all grown up, each born within a week of one another. One of those boys may just be “The Dragon Reborn” and as such, a witch of sorts has been sent to take him to be “gentled” before his abilities can grow to a level where he might one day break the world. Too bad – the forces of evil are wanting to kill him and have sent a raiding party of the very evilest monsters to kill him and possibly the entire village. This is just the opening of a truly tremendous and wide-ranging story with multiple viewpoints and adventures by these three men and several women and other characters encountered along the way. Amazing series.
