Better the 2nd time around!
This was a reread for me, and it does not disappoint! I pick up so many things the second time, providing more understanding and enjoyment. Truly epic fantasy, yet relatable in the characters and their actions. Ideals and legends that are at once foreign and familiar. Looking forward to rereading the rest of the series.
My all-time favorite fantasy series. With the Eye of the World, I was introduced to what all-inclusive storytelling could be. The characters are fantastic and the story, both within the book and throughout the series, is tremendous.
A most excellent book and beginning of the greatest fantasy series, in my opinion, ever written. A most read!
The beginning of an epic series.
Listened to this story thru Audible. Performance was really good and enjoyed the voices used for each of the characters.
Knowing how long this series is, the development of the characters was well done. I am excited to see where each of them go from here. Really grew to love Rand.
One of the best fantasy series of all time.
I loved this series
One of the most beloved epic fantasy series of all time starts with this book. That he himself didn’t get to finish writing the series takes nothing away from the experience of reading everything he did write. It’s complicated, and dense, and you sort of need a flow chart to remember who everyone is by the 12th book, but it starts very simply here.
This is a great start to an enduring fantasy series.
The prologue, in fact, might be the best I’ve ever read.
The Wheel of Time is a long series, of course, but you can see the roots of many characters and future events here. The first six books are really good.
First of 14 books. Took me a couple of chapters to get into it as Jordan jumps right in with the names of places, people, creatures, etc. But, once you feel your way around the story you get sucked in pretty quick. The main character is easy to identify with. Very dense story with a lot of descriptions. But, some of the best writing I have read since Tolkein.
Very Good – the start of a long EPIC series
Huge tale of a man who, after numerous books, learned to be a god, though the main character would not be happy to be so called. It’s all the trials, terrors, triumphs and sorrows of a hero, from very young man to a mature man of 30 or so years. It’s set in a medieval world that also included an abundance of magic. I read it while it was still being written and looked forward to each new book. I was rarely disappointed. If you take up this story, be prepared to spend a significant amount of time & money on the read ~ there are LOTS of books.
I liked it’s potential and scope far more than the book itself. It’s a better lure into a long saga than it is a good standalone volume/story. Still a decent book, just not as good in hindsight as I thought it was when I first read it.
This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. I recommend it to anyone (and everyone) who loves a great epic adventure tale. I am not one to read a book more than once as there are so many books out there and I need to read them all, however, I have read The Eye of the World four times. It is that good.
The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (1990)
When a global cataclysm ends the Age of Legends, The Breaking of the World occurs three thousand years later. The series depicts ancient mythology and advancements similar to the Industrial Revolution.

The Eye of the World
I read this book when it first came out in paperback. I thought it would take me some time to read through it. I had trouble putting it down. After I finished it, I found out it was part of a series and that the second was currently in large paperback. I knew I couldn’t wait for it to come out in regular paperback. Enjoy.
This is a good book. I first read it 20 years ago and I seem to remember it really gripped me. I’ve just re-read it and I remember why. This is a fun story. It gets moving straight away and takes you on a ride.
Is it original? Maybe not (and lets be honest neither was Star Wars). But it taps into the timeworn good vs evil conflicts that I love to read about. Yes it re-uses a lot of tropes and yes some of the characters and settings feel a little familiar – but there’s a ton of new ideas thrown in that put a new spin on old themes – and I really like that. Jordan has started to take us on an exploration of his own unique world in this book.
From memory I think the WoT saga starts to slow down around book 6 – I never finished the series the first time around. But I recollect loving the first 3 books. This book moves at a cracking pace and does a lot to keep me interested in where this is going – and in what’s happened before. You should definitely read this one.
This is the first in an epic series. The world is rich and the characters, as well as the storyline, held my attention. I’m now on to the second in ‘The Wheel of Time’ series by Robert Jordan.
Wonderful book, really enjoyed the series. The characters were amazing, the story was excellent. Definitely will become one of the classics.
epic fantasy adventure…then soooooo many books in the series made it jump the shark
