Can we ever escape our secrets?
In the cobblestoned streets of Luxembourg, Kate Moore’s days are filled with playdates and coffee mornings, her weekends spent in Paris and skiing in the Alps. But Kate is also guarding a tremendous, life-defining secret — one that’s become so unbearable that it begins to unravel her newly established expat life. She suspects that another American couple are not who they claim to be; her husband is acting suspiciously; and as she travels around Europe, she finds herself looking over her shoulder, increasingly terrified that her own past is catching up with her. As Kate begins to dig, to uncover the secrets of the people around her, she finds herself buried in layers of deceit so thick they threaten her family, her marriage, and her life.
Stylish and sophisticated, fiercely intelligent, and expertly crafted, The Expats proves Chris Pavone to be a writer of tremendous talent.

I love thrillers that stay away from the usual tropes. (Ex-military dude with a chip on his shoulder who is the only guy to save the President/DC/World; no real backstory other than an info-dump). Instead, this novel is about a married couple whose secrets could prove fatal. Pavone rachets up the tension superbly. Excellent read.
I can’t believe the rave reviews from some readers/authors on this terribly written book. I’m glad there are some other reviewers, like myself, who find life is too short to waste on an extremely boring, read this before story. Not recommended!
I fond the book disappointing. While there were some interesting twists and turns (especially at the end), the writing was a bit tired — making it somewhat of a drudge to get through. I almost put it down several times, planning to leave it unfinished.
Boring and I couldn’t wait to be done with
I just couldn’t get into this. Probably just not my type of book, but I couldn’t see where the story was going, and found myself confused more than enthralled.
I don’t think Chris Pavone doesn’t get the acclaim he deserves. His thrillers are smart and entertaining. Start with the Ex-Pats and go from there. You’ll thank me later.
Wow, the ending is great! So many reveals and twists … but it took a long time to get this interesting and on a very choppy path with starts and stops of information. Then repeating and adding a little more going back and forth between characters/time periods etc Just couldn’t get a good reading rhythm until the last part of the book and then I …
I loved this book —perhaps because I’ve lived most of my life as an ex-pat or perhaps because this is a fantastic novel filled with twist and turns…
Crisp, literate, engaging … this gem of a modern espionage thriller may not be the most original book in the world, but it proves that the old tricks still work. And rarely has the theme been explored with such elan.
Page turner. I enjoyed the lives of these characters so much
This was very different, set at a good pace, peaked my interest. A woman who is a CIA agent and her husband does not know it leaves the job she loves to move to Europe with her husband and 2 children. Her husband has a great job offer, it will mean more money in their pockets, a chance to explore new places, a good learning environment for their …
A tremendously enjoyable spy story that is also the extremely literate story of a marriage and is full of the kinds of small insights into everyday life you would not expect to find in a spy story. Very enjoyable.
I love the twists, turns, and suspense of this book. Kate Moore and her husband and children move to Luxembourg, but Kate has a secret. In her new home she begins to reinvent herself. Her husband works incessantly, doing a job Kate has never understood, for a banking client she’s not allowed to know. When another American couple arrives, Kate …
The Expats is an intelligent, clever, intricate, twisting story that kept me reading and turning the pages. The frequent shifts between points in the past and the present added dimension to the plot and, for me, made it more interesting than a linear presentation. Chronology is understood from context. Written from the point of view of the female …
This was one of the most fun spy thrillers I’ve read. From the setting to the role reversal of characters – it kept me engaged and hungry for more.
