Whitney Dineen has done it again! This was my second book from Ms. Dineen and I loved it!
Emmie grew up in the small southern town of Creek Water surrounded by her loving, well-meaning family, but she yearned to escape from the gossipy old biddies who run the country club scene there. School in NYC and a budding career keep her busy and afford the perfect excuse to avoid trips back home. That is until one event changes everything.
Emmie finds herself back in Creek Water trying desperately to avoid the scrutiny of one Cootie Wilcox; the worst buddy of them all. Emmie’s reintroduced to a boy she grew up with and boy has he grown up! Zach and Emmie spend a good portion of the book running hot and cold as neither seems certain of how to proceed and takes their cues from the other. Eventually they talk and work things out much to the joy of both of their families.
In the end Emmie and Zach’s story will come full circle. This was a happily ever after ever ending that was very unexpected and even better than I hoped for. I highly recommend this book.

It’s outlandish and quirky and just so ridiculously silly. I had so much fun reading this book. I genuinely laughed out loud on many occasions. Though, Emmie’s ability to completely overlook the obvious drove me batty through most of the story. For me, there was nothing unexpected about the little twist in the tale. Well… I guess, what was unexpected was that Emmie never saw it coming. We may not get the opportunity to live inside Zach’s head, however I thought he did a really good job of making his thoughts clear. Now I’ve gone and fallen in love with the whole Frothingham clan and I badly want to read more about them.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.
Ms. Dineen works her magic again in this witty and wonderful romantic comedy. I laughed, I smiled, I even shed a few tears. Now, I’ll have to wait impatiently for her next book…
With a plot that’s equal parts ludicrous and hysterical, it’s hard not to enjoy this romantic comedy. It was most certainly never boring, and constantly keeping me on my toes. Well written and told exclusively from the heroine’s perspective, the reader is left guessing about our hero’s true intentions. Sure, there were a few things I didn’t love, but the story definitely held my interest from start to finish.
The story follows Emmie, a woman who has a work incident so embarrassing it can only be described as “The Event.” She goes out and gets drunk on tequila, waking up in a stranger’s bed with few memories of the night before. What she does know is that she’s now pregnant and unable to locate the father. After she’s let go from work, she moves back home to raise her baby. But her small town has some judgmental individuals, so her family makes up a story about the baby’s father and she plays along. Emmie keeps running into Zach, a guy she knew back in high school, who seems torn between being pissed at her and wanting her. As they spend more time together, Emmie still isn’t sure of Zach’s motives, but she does know that her own attraction to him refuses to go away.
I really liked the light-hearted, funny tone of the book. There’s a lot going on that seems a little too out there to be true, and not having Zach’s side of the story leads the reader to make a lot of assumptions. But I caught myself smiling or laughing many times throughout the story, and it seemed to fly by. There’s no explicit sex, but definitely some chemistry between Zach and Emmie. All in all, if you’re looking for a romantic comedy that doesn’t hold back on the humor, this is certainly worth a read. I received a free copy via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review of this hysterical book.
Emmeline Frothingham is from a small town, with small-minded judgemental petty people. When she grabs the opportunity to leave and makes her way to New York City to become the head buyer at Silver Spoons a posh boutique, that is until “The Event” that changes her life in every conceivable manner.
It’s like the Beverly Hill Billies meet the Real Housewives of New York City, only it takes place in Creek Water, Missouri.
Once again Whitney Dineen pens a story that is kindred, comparable with some outrageously hilarious events that you could picture in a romantic comedy movie but also real life. I truly enjoy this woman’s style of writing it’s clear, concise, witty and while reading her words you can picture the events unfolding in your mind’s eye. Her words always leave me with a light heart and kindness that I wish to last forever. An excellent romantic comedy which I hope is picked to become a big-screen hit!
Missouri is not a southern state. Never has been, never will be. People from this area don’t talk like that. The book got better when the author quit trying to make everyone sound southern. It was rather like she had an idea of what southerners might sound like but never actually spent time in the area.
Best book I have read in a while. Truthfully enjoyed this book and author.
This was weird to read because I’m from the south. We don’t talk that way. The book was better after the author quit trying to sound southern. Missouri is not a southern state. It has always been considered a northern state. Again, weird. Like the author wasn’t from around here and made up stuff based on false beliefs.
Enjoyed it so much I bought the series. The Event was wonderfully entertaining and such a joy to read.
Loved it!
Very enjoyable and a good read. Made me happy during tragic times. I needed this.
Cute story.
This book was JUST WHAT I NEEDED! (A light, entertaining, fun read with a happy ending.)
I loved the characters (and boy were they characters!), the wit and the story so much I was thrilled to find there were two more books after this. The perfect way to shut my brain off at night and to take a little break from work and kids. Very excited for the 4th book to arrive.
Captures gossips and make-up of small towns
Wanted to keep reading to see what happened.
I lived the series! Read them straight through.
I enjoyed reading a book with imperfect but insightful characters
This book is ha-ha funny! Loved it!
Distained by country club set in bumpkin land Missouri to New York Buyer…. to once again distained by CC set in Bumpkin land. Way way too long (over 50 chapters), most of which is country bumpkin that is supposed to be country club set? Way to hoakie. Way to misrepresentative of Missouri. Way too much detail. The interesting storyline is lost in the extra stuff. Country Club bumpkin who felt looked down upon by rest of country club set makes good going to prestigious college. Makes a Jerk of herself at a company awards dinner so she gets totally plastered .. so totally that she doesn’t remember running into a guy she knew in high school and had drunk sex with and got pregnant. Goes back to bumpkin land and puts up with family whitewash and the guy who got her pregnant is there…. plus the side stories of mama’s manipulating the romances of their kids and who is allowed to love who amongst the country club set.
Okay but did not work for me
The Event is the first book in The Creek Water Series by Whitney Dineen. This is also the first book I have read by this author and after reading the book description I was looking forward to something light, funny and sweet, maybe with a bit of salty and spicy added in.
For me this was a mixed book. There were things about the story-line and characters that I liked and parts where I laughed. But then there were other things that I just rolled my eyes and and groaned, thinking you have to be kidding me right. I think for me there were just a lot of predictable things and people which when added with the fact this is a 300+ page book it just dragged out. I guess I as expecting something and ended up being disappointed.
So while this book was not for me that does not mean that other readers will not love it, as we all have our own tastes and opinions.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
