I have a wonderful reading with very funny situations. A wonderful family that loves you and that are ready to have your back at any moment. The antics of moms and aunts to stop the antics of others, in the name of one person that still hold a grudge for not marring the person that she thought was the right person for her. The downside of the story for me was the ending. I was expecting more but maybe next time with the second book in the series.

Cute romance with Southern Charm
4.5stars
I love the wit and zaniness author Whitney Dineen instills in her characters, along with the ensemble, family feel that makes you want to meet these people. This short romance set on the shores of the Mississippi carries her signature witty, easy-to-read style and includes some great side characters, like heroine Emmeline’s uncles, the family arch nemesis Cooty, and Emmeline’s flowerpot-wearing granny.
Emmeline is pretty smart, efficient and grounded EXCEPT when she is cheated out of a hard-earned award and/or drinks tequila. Her single mom status does not bother her but the gossips in her small hometown are fed a line to keep them off her back. Does it work and what about baby Faye’s absent father figure? The path to happy families does not always run smooth but it sure is a trip!
The start of a new series I am really looking forward to reading. Bring me more, Seymour!
Emmeline Frothingham left her hometown of Creek Water, Missouri, as soon as she was able due to the small-minded, judgmental people. But now she’s back, looking for a job – she had gotten into a bit of trouble out there in the “real” world, which she refers to as “The Event”. She had worked after college as head buyer for Silver Spoons Enterprises in Manhattan, an exclusive gourmet/kitchenware boutique chain. The Event was the corporate dinner dance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where all the bigwigs gathered to recognize top-performing employees. With her financially successful idea about using linens instead of paper napkins to lessen paper waste and add elegance to dining, she thought she was definitely going to get the award. She was so sure that when they called Allison’s name as winner, she also walked up and grabbed the award – even made a thank you speech! When Allison grabbed the award from her, they had a fight in front of everyone. She ran out, got super drunk, and woke in someone’s apartment in Brooklyn – and later discovered she was pregnant!
Emmie’s friend, Lexi, encouraged her to go back to the baby’s father and get child support. But she had been so ashamed that she ran out and has no idea who he is or where he lives. Then Silver Spoons laid her off, which worked out anyway since baby Faye arrived a month early! Her family insisted she come back home rather than try to raise a child in New York by herself. Her uncles offered a job and gave her a warm welcome when she showed up at their office. Then Uncle Jed asked if she remembered Zachary Grant, as a tall, gorgeous man with green eyes get off the sofa and walk over to greet her. He sure had changed since high school! The shy senior had built up the courage to ask her out to the Spring Dance at the Creek Water Country Club back then, but she and her Mama were not members and she didn’t want to show up there and draw attention from the nasty gossips. But she didn’t say that to Zach and he assumed she didn’t want to be with him. He had stopped talking to her and ignored her after that.
Her uncles continued to tell Zach that Emmie and Faye came home and she would be working on the project with them to turn a building they bought into a restaurant, coffee place, gourmet food shop, and the like. Zach asked who Faye was – her little girl. He was surprised that she was married, but they told him her fiancé, whom she had been with for 3 years, was killed in the Middle East. She was stunned but went along with the lie. But it seemed that Zach may have shot her a nasty look as he left.
Emmie’s uncles show her the warehouse and then ask her to stay with Zach to learn his plans on the plumbing since he’s their contractor. He acts judgmental toward her, makes comments she doesn’t like. What is his problem?
This well-written book was enjoyable and funny. It had all of the Southern Charm feeling, with amusing quirky characters living in a small town and hilarious happenings that will have the reader laughing out loud. The descriptions of the town and people are so well done that the reader feels like a part of the town and easily envisions the areas the author vividly describes. As Emmie settles into life back home, will she ever think about her baby’s daddy? Will she wonder about his identity? And will she figure out why she reacted the way she did with Zach when she felt his breath and fingers on her neck when she begged him to help fix the buttons on her dress? Grab a copy of this terrific book and enjoy the perks of Southern charm!
Emmaline has a little problem with tequila. Thankfully she has drunk it only rarely, but imbibing one night after an embarrassment at a work party leads to her baby girl Faye. She was out of it enough not to even have an address or name for the father.
A return to her hometown for a job with her family and a chance for her mama to take care of her baby instead of handing her off to strangers puts Emmie back with a world she had left in her rear view. On the one hand, there are many kind and generous folks in the community. On the other, there are some small minded, mean and nasty bullies and gossips.
Emmie finds true family again, along with some love and respect for herself, her mother, and some folks in her community she did not expect a connection with.
Funny, sweet and moving.

What a fun book! It’s a laugh out loud look at real life in a small southern community, gossips and all. The lengths people will go to avoid petty judgement and the bullies that do the judging. If you believe in fate and Emmie’s belief that you usually end up where you’re supposed to be. A one nighter ends in a little souvenir nine months later and the guilt of not remembering the baby daddy due to tequila intolerance that blanks the memory. There are many nifty surprises in this story. Enjoyable and entertaining. Well written!

A good clean read from Whitney Dineen, Emmie has a bad night with an alcohol blackout one-night stand and doesn’t stick around to see who it’s with or remembers where she is; later to find out she’s pregnant. She decides to move out of NYC back home to a small town, (where everyone knows everyone’s business and is ruled by a bully, Cootie) to raise her daughter. She has a job with her uncles and Zach, a handsome contractor, who she went to school with. Can they get beyond they complicated pasts?
I love Whitney Dineen’s writing! The Event was excellent as all of her books are. This one had a southern charm thing going that was very sweet, but it still had her trademark family quirky closeness and small town vibe. The characters were vibrant and distinct and the plot is very character driven. Loved it.
Oh boy – The Event is just like living in the south! It has all the quirky characters, loving crazy relatives who will “fix” your problems for you AND bury the bodies. It is hilarious. I will say I figured out a key plot point early on but it didn’t ruin the story for me, at all. Emmie (Emmaline) Frothingham is a very strong, lovable, crazy character and Zachary Grant is such a great guy – they are the perfect match for this story. Zach fits right in with all the town craziness! Of course, he is a home town boy so it works for him. And Baby Faye… She may not say much but loved her. Really good read with all the feels and laughs you can handle, y’all!
Chuckles throughout ~ leaving a smile when finished
How enjoyable was it once Emmie moved back home to her close-knit extended family and the local turmoil of Creek Water, Missouri! If there’s an “event” … leave it to Emmie to step right into the middle of it, and then walk out the other side with her spine straight and her head held-high. Each character was unique and almost all were very likeable. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting each member of her Frothingham family, and continued to be surprised how she applied her southern charm to help each one. I’m really looking forward to THE MOVE now.
The Event has all the elements I adore in a rom-com: a small-town Southern setting, relatable characters, and a witty, fast-paced storyline. Dineen bring her usual sparkle and hilarity to this super-fun novel.
Whitney Dineen never ceases to amaze me with her penchant for writing original and engaging stories. The Event is all that and more. Do yourself a favor and download this sweet book filled with Southern charm and laugh out loud moments. You won’t be disappointed.
When Emmaline gets confused and embarrassed at an awards ceremony, the only thing left to do is go get drunk and forget the night ever happened. And that’s exactly what she does, except nine months later she gets a beautiful reminder of that night. But who’s the daddy? And what do you tell the gossiping ladies from the country club when you move back home to your loving but very meddling family? This book had me laughing out loud and smiling the whole time. Highly recommend!
First in new series . The ending wasn’t a surprise but this was an enjoyable read. I love all the characters, the Moms are great and family texts LOL. Emmie goes home to raise her daughter Faye, she is an unknown one night stand surprise, this part reminds me of the song Tequila makes her clothes fall off. While back home she reunites with an old sort of friend Zach. Mishaps, miscommunications, misunderstandings and hilarity ensue. Whitney Dineen has a knack for the quirky, lovable and relatable characters in her books. So far I am really enjoying her stories. Can’t wait for the next one!
