“Picture Sweet Home Alabama meets Hope Floats with a touch of something totally unexpected. Hollywood needs to pay attention to this one!!”-USA Today Bestselling Author, Diana OrgainThere’s a reason Emmeline Frothingham left her hometown of Creek Water, Missouri as soon as humanly possible. That reason is small-minded, judgmental people who wouldn’t know the truth if it was coughed up on them … on them like an errant furball.
After graduating from college, Emmie gets her dream job in New York City. As the head buyer at Silver Spoons–a high-end boutique, and single girl about town, her life is ideal. That is, until the night of The Event, her company’s annual award’s ball at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nerves plus too much tequila leave Emmie dealing with a wicked hangover, the unemployment line, and a surprise to end all surprises.
Facing the repercussions of her wild night, Emmie is forced to go home to work in her family’s business. But her return puts her dead in the sights of the gossipy country club harpies who drove her away in the first place.
Will Emmie make peace with her past and embrace the love of her family? Will she discover that the man who seems to be judging her most has a secret of his own? Find out in this deliciously fun romantic comedy, sure to put a smile on your face!

Whitney Dineen’s sparkling wit and brilliant humour shines bright in this delightful tale of coming home and second chances.
This book was a real page-turner, and I had a lot of fun guessing what was going to happen next. The author did an amazing job with world-building (her descriptions of Creek Water, MO were so detailed and vivid I felt like I was there!) and creating very quirky and memorable characters. I’m excited to read more about the Frothingham family in future books!
Funny, quirky, heartwarming, small town drama. I love the way Whitney sucks you into the story so easily. From the first line and throughout the entire book, I found myself smiling and laughing and swooning. I didn’t want this story to end!
Just simple pleasure to read.
I read the first one of these Creek Water, Missouri books recently, also my first Whitney Dineen novel, and was utterly charmed. The plot is a bit predictable (aren’t all romances?), but the characters are fun, the dialogue is a delight, and the setting is really brought to life. Cootie is a fabulous villain. I read the next two in quick succession, even the one that says it’s a rock star romance. (I have zero interest in rock star romances.) These books are just plain fun to read, like you’re putting your feet up and snacking on bonbons. Not that they’re just fluff. They also have a good (lightly handled) social conscience.
How can you not love a romcom that has a villain named Cootie? In addition to author Whitney Dineen’s sparkling wit, The Event has a delightful twist at the climax. It’s one of those things that ties everything up in a sweet, happy bow, and one that I, at least, didn’t see coming. Truly satisfying. It all works to elevate this small-town, sweet romantic comedy above the ordinary.
What a GREAT start to a new series! I love fun, quirky stories that make me laugh and Whitney Dineen gives me all of that and more.
When Emmie’s job in New York goes south…She goes South too, back to her family in Missouri. Join her and her family for more of the laugh out loud humor this author is known for, but with a Southern twist. I highly recommend it.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I laughed until cried! I want to live in this town, with these characters. Picture Sweet Home Alabama meets Hope Floats with a touch of something totally unexpected. Hollywood needs to pay attention to this one!!
Really good read. A good plot including some humor and a couple of real surprises.
This is a fun read. Emmie is funny, strong and has a big heart. She wants to do the right thing – as long as she’s not drinking tequila – but doesn’t know how. When she heads home to join the family business after a certain mishap derails her career, she’s determined to succeed in her new role and love is the furthest thing from her mind. Her loving, supportive and slightly insane family concocts a story about a fiancé who died a tragic death to protect the single mom from the town busybodies, against Emmie’s will.
The new job pairs her up with Zach, an acquaintance from high school who grew up to be drop-dead gorgeous. Emmie’s instantly attracted to him and she thinks it’s mutual but Zach is all mixed signals, making her head spin. She’s trying to make sense of their interactions while juggling her new career with the town bullies, so Emmie really has her hands full.
I loved Emmie and Zach’s story, even though it was predictable. There were no twists or surprises here, but it was still a fun read. The supporting cast is fantastic, from the country club mean girls to the meddling moms and zany uncles. This isn’t typically the kind of romance I read but I enjoyed the characters and storytelling enough that I’ll check out the next book in the series so I highly recommend this for a quick, fun read.
I love this author and everything she writes is witty and truly keeps your attention. I always look forward to a new book from her. I love the characters and would love to be their next door neighbor and friend for sure!
A laugh out loud, witty story. I loved Emmie’s crazy family. Good moral about the power of gossip and how it hurts. I believe Zach has learnt never to let Emmie have tequila ever again.
Fun, easy book to read. Part of a series that builds on the same family characters. Happy endings all around.
Good feeling read about importance of family and remembering what’s important in life! The characters are relatable and easy to like… being the first book in a series – it’s got me wanting to read more about this group from Creek Water!
Cute
This book is part of a 3 book series. I enjoyed each one. Fun reads, but with wisdom underneath if you look for it.
A must read!
Great quick read to take your mind off your troubles. I enjoyed the southern charm, family interaction, and the bossy country club Ladies. It ends very satisfying. There are a few too many editing errors which is the reason for 4 stars.
The Event was such a refreshing read!!!! I loved all the characters; however, I started getting a little annoyed with Emmie’s family being involved in EVERYTHING….but as the story progressed, it was evident that with it being a small town, that’s how it worked.
I just adored Zach!!! I had a little “feeling” of what truths were going to be revealed; which honestly, that was fine because the story was so great!
I giggled so many times too!!!
One of my fav quotes:
