Something was stolen from Zamirah. Something she had wanted to save for her first love. The thieves got away with it, while she was painted with all the blame by those she loved most. That was when the ruin began to set in. She was broken, and certain she would never trust anyone again. Ambrose did not get the memo. Ambrose was hard-headed, and he was not going anywhere. He knows Zamirah is … knows Zamirah is strong, but even superheroes need someone to lean on. If he keeps showing up, maybe he can help her learn that even the darkest parts of her are worthy of love. It won’t be easy, but nothing worth having comes without hard work.
Zamirah believes she is ruined, but to Ambrose she is perfectly imperfect, and he couldn’t love her more.

Zamirah had been through a lot of crap in her life already. She had her bff by her side. Little did she know her TA would help her heal and find love after a second attack. I wanted to hurt the professor and the school! It’s scary to know that happens! Glad the way the story ended. With her family and his admission.
Zamirah was sexually assaulted in high school, and made to feel it was her fault by everyone even her parents. She is now in college and goes to class and work. She isn’t really living life and essentially has no contact with her parents. She has her rommate and best friend Serena, and that’s it. She calls out some students in one of her classes, and leaves class, the TA, Ambrose comes after her, but she tries to push him away. Ambrose is very persistent in talking to her and trying to become a part of her life. He saves her from the professor when she is made to meet him in his office one afternoon. She reports it to the police and college authorities, and is made to feel it is her fault. Ambrose is not going to let her words deter him. He is her champion just like her bestie and room mate Serena. Will Zamirah be able to overcome her old fears? Can she handle having a boyfriend? Will she let Ambrose in? Will the professor get what he deserves? There are just a few of the things you need to read and find out the answers for. Oh my – Ambrose and Zamirah had such chemistry, and it was amazing to see them grow and become friends. Also I loved it when Ambrose explained and told Zamirah about the scars he had in his own life. Pertinent subject matter and probably should be read by all college students.
I was a bit concerned when I started reading Essence. I first thought that Zamirah was a temperamental kid. So glad I kept reading! Ambrose rocked it by interrupted the catastrophe that was started when Z was in the Professor’s office. Ambrose and Zamirah’s relationship blooms – persistence and patience paid off. Serena – OMG! What a riot! Love her attitude.
I didn’t want to put the book down. The strength of Z to get where she was and to continue to heal and grow and learn to trust again was beautiful. The story was well written showing the steps needed to get through and be a survivor when you are hit with a life-changing event. I received the book for my honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author did a great job with a hard topic. Zamirah is a broken girl. She is just trying to live a normal lif. Well as normal as she can. She has the support of her best friend and roommate Serena. Ambrose is a T.A. in one of her classes. It takes a while but Ambrose gets Zamirah to take down sone of her walls. Great read.
This was a very emotional book that deals with an issue that lots of woman(and men) have gone through that messes with your head. It shows the reader that even though you go through some horrible times, it is possible to overcome it in the end with help along the way. Good story line with interesting characters. Have those tissues ready when reading.
Such tragedy, but love saves Zamirah and Ambrose.
Zamirah thinks she is ruined and broken. Unable to love, due to what happened to her in the past.
Ambrose is determined to convince Zamirah she is worthy of love and deserves to be happy,
Will she finally lower her wall and let him in?
This was a very emotional book and I highly recommend it.
This was such a great book! It dealt with so many difficult emotions that I couldn’t stop reading it. I just wanted Zamirah to have her happily ever after!
This was an ok book, would have been much better without the errors. A very emotional roller coaster of a book that touches on a lot of sensitive issues. Overall is was a good book.
This book was amazing. Zamirah is a college student that has scars that she wasn’t sure that would ever heal. She was going to school but not living the college life. One friend and work was all she did and was happy. Ambrose was a T.A. in her one class and watch her. He knew she had something ok by that kept her closed off but knew not to push her. He became her savior or hero when she didn’t know she needed one. There’s a lot of pain and healing that needed to be done but he wasn’t leaving her. Great book.
This book deals with some tough topics. It delves into the world of sexual assault and the after affects. Shame, self-doubt, and poor self esteem are a huge part of this telling. The message of friendship and finding love after is a beautiful foundation to this story.
Zamirah and Ambrose are two college students trying to navigate through their attraction to each other and deal with all kinds of emotions due to present and past events. Zamirah is a prickly pear and uses her words as a weapon of self protection. Ambrose is persistent in his quest to befriend Zamirah and is respectful in his gentle pursuit of wanting a romantic relationship. Serena the best friend is a hoot and really adds flavor to this story.
The subject matter of this story is one that in today’s climate all should hear. Yes this story had a predictability that gives a nice resolution to several issues. If you are looking for a good HEA story that works for the YA population than this is it. Happy Reading!
This was a very emotional story. I could feel the pain and betrayal she felt towards the people that were supposed to love her the most. Great book about survival and the power of love.
This could have been a great book but there were so many errors it is in real. I finally started highlighting at page 30 and came up with 22. I don’t know how many I missed. This book had a great subject, two great main characters a great bff but the constant errors kept it from being a 5 star.
