Jack Reacher. Hero. Loner. Soldier. Soldier’s son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army’s brightest stars. But in every cop’s life there is a turning point. One case. One messy, tangled case that can shatter a career. Turn a lawman into a renegade. And make him question words like honor, valor, and duty. For Jack Reacher, this is that case. New Year’s Day, 1990. The Berlin Wall … Berlin Wall is coming down. The world is changing. And in a North Carolina “hot-sheets” motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Jack Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. But this situation can’t be controlled. Within hours the general’s wife is murdered hundreds of miles away. Then the dominoes really start to fall.
Two Special Forces soldiers—the toughest of the tough—are taken down, one at a time. Top military commanders are moved from place to place in a bizarre game of chess. And somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the U.S. Army, Jack Reacher—an ordinarily untouchable investigator for the 110th Special Unit—is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have.
But Reacher won’t quit. He’s fighting a new kind of war. And he’s taking a young female lieutenant with him on a deadly hunt that leads them from the ragged edges of a rural army post to the winding streets of Paris to a confrontation with an enemy he didn’t know he had. With his French-born mother dying—and divulging to her son one last, stunning secret—Reacher is forced to question everything he once believed…about his family, his career, his loyalties—and himself. Because this soldier’s son is on his way into the darkness, where he finds a tangled drama of desperate desires and violent death—and a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed.

This time Reacher’s involvement wasn’t random. He’s the right man for the right job.
This goes back to a time I remember. Some of the details about the Army and the world of Special Operations at the time made me scratch my head at times, but it’s fiction and entertainment.
We learned a bit more about Reacher’s past. My wife’s mother is from Strasbourg so there was an interesting connection there.
It might sound funny but the reality is these books are fantasy for those who want to believe in the modern knight in shining armor and that’s fine fare.
I did not find out that The Enemy was originally written as the prequel to Child’s first book. I enjoyed the read because it sets a tone for future books in the Jack Reacher series. The book certainly shows Reacher as we know him; in charge, a realist, unflinching. But Reacher also shows a vulnerable side. In The Enemy, Reacher is still on active duty. He’s assigned to investigate the murder of an Army general found murdered in a sleazy motel. The general’s briefcase is missing and things go downhill from there. An excellent read.
“Warning Spoilers” The only thing I liked about this story is Reacher & Joe family scenes. The rest of it didn’t interest me.
Fabulous as always. And the parts with Reacher, Joe & their mother—so moving!
Every book in the Jack Reacher series is terrific. This one takes you back to his army days and he gets involved with a conspiracy at the highest levels. Great read
love jack reacher
I like all the Reacher books I have read. I space them out so I can enjoy how unique his style is. This one was no exception…I got right inside his thinking and went along for the ride! Action to the end and quite an enjoyable read.
Love all Jack Reacher books. Some more than others.
Lee Child rocks!
I like Jack Reacher but this one got a little long in places. All in all a good book.
Jack is still in the army in this book. He is transferred to a new posting and assigned duty over the New Year’s holiday. He feels from the start this is a bad move and is reminded as death unfolds and is magnified that he knew this was going to be a bad/difficult time in his career.
Jack fights to find information as the deaths keep piling up and his new commander is set to make things as difficult as possible. Hang in there with him, as usual, he will prevail.
I always a Jack Reacher book.
A lot of action.
Another great read from a great story teller!
Child’s Jack Reacher character is always in the midst of trouble, able to sniff it out where we mere mortals would walk right by.
Never met a Jack Reacher book that I didn’t like. Have read almost all of them — probably all, but I lose count.
You can’t go wrong with any of Lee Child’s books. All action packed!!!
Reacher never disappoints.
All the Reacher books are great!
Any Reacher book is a gem. Child never disappoints.
