The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope is an unconventional and passionately romantic love story that is as breathtaking and wondrous as The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.
During WWII, teenager Evelyn Roe is sent to manage the family farm in rural North Carolina, where she finds what she takes to be a badly burned soldier on their property. She rescues him, and it quickly becomes … She rescues him, and it quickly becomes clear he is not a man… and not one of us. The rescued body recovers at an unnatural speed, and just as fast, Evelyn and Adam fall deeply in love.
In The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope, Rhonda Riley reveals the exhilarating, terrifying mystery inherent in all relationships: No matter how deeply we love someone, and no matter how much we will sacrifice for them, we can only know them so well…

It’s been a long time since I have been compelled to anxiously wait until I could continue to read a book. I didn’t devour it at one sitting, but rather slowly absorbed it. This story is unlike anything I’ve ever read. And I’ve been a reader since 1962. It’s beautiful, touching, magical, gut wrenching, and will stay with me a long, long time. I …
The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope is strange and powerful, a hybrid work that’s part Alice Munro, part Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and entirely, marvelously, itself. In her debut novel, Rhonda Riley has written the most resonant and touching love story I’ve read in a very long time.
When it ended it seemed like it could have gone on for a whole nother book. One of the best books I have ever read. I’m 77 and I have reading since The BOBSEY TWINS and the first NANCY DREW stories.
All in all, I enjoyed this book. The play on gender fluidity was timely, and well done. I felt setting it in rural North Carolina in the 1940s on was both interesting, and slightly unbelievable. Perhaps it’s my northern bias, but it took a bit to convince myself someone so steeped in her culture would so readily accept all she did. Once I got over …
I love this unique and original story. So beautifully written. I did not want to put it down and was sorry when I read the end. This book has stayed with me for over a year now.
I’m not sure how to classify this masterpiece literary novel; it’s a story of love, relationships and wonder, but it is not a romance novel. The story uses magical realism, but it is not fantasy or science fiction. I agree with other reviewers who’ve compared it to The Time Traveler’s Wife or The Story of Edgar Sawtell, perhaps even a touch of the …
Shades of Alice Hoffman. I completely fell into this other worldly story. While it does have a touch of fantasy to it, the main character’s telling of the story, makes it seem so believable.
Bizarre premise but it held my attention.
While I found much of the story almost absurd, I give the author an A for effort. I continued to read and consider the entire novel. If you want to read a story that makes you wonder about “origins”, read on!
Truly unusual love story
I first thought the story was crazy, but then I got hooked and couldn’t put it down. Really enjoyed this whimsical story. Sorry to see it end!
Read a lot, and never read anything like it. For me scifi, or whatever it is, with a very original setting. I would give it a 4.5 if possible. I only give out a 5 once in a while.
One of the strangest books i have ever read. There were two many loose ends in the plot for me to say I enjoyed it.
Still thinking about this book. Strange story, but compelling and thought provoking.
Very different; well written, bit of a page turner.
Enjoyed very much!
A book that drew me in and made me think. What does it really mean to be human? To be like or different from others? To love unconditionally? It’s a really, really thoughtful and thought provoking book. I am glad I came upon it.
This is such an adorable book. You will feel every feeling as you read it.
I loved how “A” was carried throughout the book, fantastic story
A beautiful book! Lush. True Love knows no boundries, it’s not about the way a person looks, it’s the beauty of the soul. This author captured that perfectly. My new favorite novel.
