I am hooked on this series and this is a great purchase for binge reading. Providing backstory for two main characters, this completely introduces these characters and helps the reader understand and begin to love them. Since I was new to this series, I have begun to purchase the follow-on series and I already know and love the characters! I highly recommend this series!

Review of The Empire’s Rogues Vol 1 by Richard Parry
Two space adventures with hand to hand fighting – 3.5 stars
Fast read set up as novellas.
Set up as two apparently unrelated stories with young people out to do the right thing. Lanky space-born Nate sets out to rescue a space tourist at Ganymede, Don, who is not as weak (but is much richer) than he looks.
Nate’s friend Valerie is the brains of the pair. She can make computers sing and robots dance. Don just wants to save the Empire from itself. (Don’s father is the current emperor who is just a bit corrupt). Nate, Valerie and Dom take on the (evil) empire and (can you guess?) stay alive. Predictable but fun.
In the contrasting but unrelated story set at Starfire Station, Grace is a self-assured 15 year old. She is merely an assassin and spy with excellent sword skills who escaped from earth. Grace can read emotions and supports herself as a thief. She trusts no one until a friendly customs agent offers her an opportunity.
Escaping from her father who has places a big reward for her safe return, Grace tries to stay one step ahead of potential captors with fancy footwork and modest mind alerts from potential advisories.
Don’t worry, the good guys always escape and suffer only minor abrasions.
These stories are light and shallow — A good escapist breakaway.
I have read all six books in this series and loved them. They are light on gore and death and there is no bad language so they are fine for YA and those who prefer clean stories. These six stories focus on the early years of Nate, Captain of the Tyche, and Grace, Tyche’s assessor, and how their actions molded their adult characters.
I bought this book and sent it to my 15 year old grand daughter because I knew she would like it too. Her father decided to read it as well, he said, “Looks interesting!” Proof that Parry can write for all ages. Buy the book, you won’t be disappointed.
I am biased I fell in love with these books when I started to read them and so I don’t believe any of them could be bad, ill explain. I started reading Richard’s books with the Chromed series and I thought I like this is there more, then I started reading the Ezeroc wars it was like finding a family you didn’t know was missing, the crew of the Tyche remind me of Serenity and not in a copy kind of way but in a oh my god why didn’t Richard write the second season of Firefly kind of way. I am already emotionally invested in the crew, so to me The Empire’s Rogues is just the logical extension to the world I am living in, I want to know where Nate became Nate, I want to know why Grace is Grace and why her dad is a %&^%$#@%&. I don’t want to spoil anything so all ill say is this, if you enjoyed the Ezeroc wars and why wouldn’t you then you need to read The Empire’s Rogues all of them, then we need Richard to write more because i’m going to run out of books to read and that would be bad.

I’ve enjoyed each one of the stories immensely, during my initial read-through. Parry writes with a clarity of purpose, and depth to his characters, that is simply extraordinary, and his dabbling with YA has proved himself a true writer! I enjoyed each episode all over again. Empire’s Rogues bursts with ideas and proves once again that Richard Parry is one of SF’s great world builders, a Storymancer! I highly recommend the series.
This is a collection of the first six stories in the author’s young adult series in the Tyche universe.
The collection features three linked stories of a young Nate and three linked stories of a young Grace. As would be expected, all of these stories are very well written with lots of action, great characters and a solid plot. If you haven’t explored this universe, then this is the perfect opportunity to get started.
I cannot recommend this series enough.

This is one of my favorite authors, he has gotten me to read genre’s I have avoided for years like the werewolf genre 😉 with “Night’s Favor”. His characters pull me in, they are all beautifully flawed and loveable in their own right. The women are strong and can guard your back and never lose the things that make them women. There is tons of snark, which is always great just when things are about to hit the fan. Wont mention the high body count that seems to be a common element in his stories or the sense of family that makes these characters worth cheering on. My first intro to his stories was the Tyche series which I stayed up all night reading back to back. Nathan Chevell is the big brother everyone wants in their corner.
So while these stories in this Volume are short they do pack a punch. We get to see Nate before he met the Tyche and Grace after she escapes her father.
Ganymede Steel
I had wondered if Nathan/Nate also had a savior complex as a young man and boy does he ever. I swear he gets into more trouble trying to do the right thing than one should at times.
Nate is in need of some revenue to right a wrong that happened when someone watched his back and they paid the consequences for his actions. After saving what he thought was a rich “mark” Nate finds himself in a position to finally get the pay day that may be the answer to all of his prayers. As the saying goes if it looks to good to be true it probably is.
This is a fast moving, fast-talking story with loads of snark and a body count that is fast making Nathan a much sort after young man.
Dragon’s Run
I will admit when I read “Tyche’s Grace” it was not my favorite book by this author. I attributed it mostly to my reading too many books with female children of Oriental descent being abused by their fathers. Plus the other books Nathan showed up and he didn’t in her story. Since my first reading of Grace I must say she has grown on me.
This insight into how she survived after escaping from her abusive father combined with how she has acquitted herself with the crew has risen her to a much higher status for me. Despite her tragic and abusive childhood she still has a somewhat hopeful naïve side with her view of people. Her head is all logic and looking for several escape routes while her heart has a sliver of wanting to be accepted for who she is and not what she can do.
This a short fast paced read as you tag along with Grace to see if she can stay a step ahead of her father and those that are hunting her and maybe find someone she can trust.
Ganymede Plunder
Another short fast paced continuation of Nate’s adventure with his rescued friend from “Ganymede Steel”. Nate is realizing he may have bitten off more than he can chew in his bid to get to a possible treasure and in the process keep from getting killed, keep his friends safe and possibly save the town.
In true Nate fashion the body count starts racking up as Nate finds himself in trouble once again with a multitude of different bad guys. Will his new friend be enough to watch his back and hopefully make good on a previous promise.
Dragon’s Bargain
If you have read “Tyche’s Grace” then you will know due to Grace’s abusive father she has massive trust issues. There are times when she has to take the risk and trust someone. She is wondering if her partner has sold her out or is it just sucky coincidence that she seems to be running a step behind the bad guys.
Some of the bad guys are from her father others are just out to end her because she has something they want. All she wants to do is sell what she has and get off the planet and someplace where she can hide from the world and what she is. Shaky alliances are made on a tiny sliver of trust. Is that sliver about to cost her everything?
Ganymede Plague
Nate’s saving the world complex is given a real challenge in this installment. He is caught in a heart-wrenching dilemma between saving his best friends life or saving an entire town. In true Nate fashion he is going to do everything in his power to swing those odds his way. With his new friend who may have a few secrets being kept close to his chest aiding him they find themselves making some shady deals and taking some pretty wild risks in the hopes that their intel gives them the winning hand.
Things take on a “Night Of The Living Dead” feel and staying one step ahead of the bad guys, the infected towns people and an old nemesis that wants Nate silenced keeps this book moving at break neck speed. In true Richard Parry fashion even with all of the action and snark he always has a way of touching a part of your heart and you find yourself doing that extra series of blinks because something got in your eye.
Dragon’s Rescue
Grace’s trust is pushed to the limits as well as her need to survive. She keeps things close to the vest and every once in a while she allows someone in and holds her breath to see if her trust will be betrayed again? She has survived on her wits and for the most part kept her attachments to people to a minimum, now she’s having to make a choice of saving people she doesn’t even know or walking away to live another day.
The secrets to what she sold is coming to light and it’s about to make the world an even uglier place. Grace now has more to deal with than escaping her father, she now has to decide what type of person she wants to be? One who only thinks of herself or one who is willing to sacrifice it all for the greater good?
This is a fast moving staying one step ahead of the bad guys and hoping like hell the people standing with you are the good guys because things are about to get messy type of situation.
