Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.
Worse, Sicarius, the … Sicarius, the empire’s most notorious assassin, is in town. He’s tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills… or someone wants her dead.

This is your introduction to the wonderfully talented Lindsay Buroker. The series is fantastic, and the humor and characters are right up my star lane. Amaranthe and Sicarius start the slowest-burn romance ever, but the payoff is well worth the wait.
The Emperor’s Edge was the first of Lindsay’s books I picked up and I absolutely loved the world building and character development in this book and the rest of the series. Each character is well fleshed-out and original and Lindsay does such a great job of getting these misfit individuals to work together, despite the odds and despite their …
I loved the world building in this series. Amaranthe is a fantastic heroine, in part because she makes a fair number of mistakes. But rather than let herself wallow in them, or worse, end up needing to be saved from them, she gets herself out of her own jams and fixes her messes. The ensemble cast is great, and each book in the series gives a …
I was introduced to this series by Bookbub. I absolutely LOVED it! I thought the characters were well developed and that the snark and wit displayed was perfect. Some readers may argue that Sicarius’s abilities and Amaranthe’s powers of pursuation were unrealistic, (and they might be) but I thought that they were well thought out and didn’t bother …
I love it when I find a female lead that doesn’t have a chip on her shoulder or something to prove. Amaranthe Lokdon is one. She isn’t particularly deadly or fashionable, but she has a talent for seeing the good in people and bringing them together. I loved all the characters (who all add different sorts of humor) and if the “grand plan” in the …
I loved this book and series. I highly recommend it. The characters are fun and relatable, and Amaranthe is a great main character. I thought making her a bit OCD was both realistic and entertaining. I’ve always reviewed Buroker`s books favorably, but this is a great first book to a wonderful series.
I’ve been on a Lindsay Buroker kick for a while now. I’m even reading this book that I have read before as her books are very addictive. I love the banter between her characters, the chuckle out loud comedic relief amidst tense moments, the action, the inner thoughts of Amaranth, her heart, her desire to right the wrongs of her people and do …

This whole series is just brilliant
My first introduction to this author and it was fantastic. I just loved Amaranthe and Sicarius as the unlikely couple. Their subtle romance was framed around a great supporting cast as equally compelling and well crafted as our hero and heroine. This author is very good at her character development and equally good with world biulding. Each book …
The characters were so fun to root for!!
This was a delightful opening to a fantasy series. I liked the characters, especially Amaranthe with her moral compass and OCD. Sicarius remained a bit distant, but other secondary characters had their own personalities and interesting back stories. The plot had a clear goal, save the emperor, but the road there was odd. The part about tanking the …
It was horrible, nothing in it was good
I love a good fantasy novel and this fit the ticket. The characters are magnificent and fallible. The story is rich and promising.
I enjoy all Lindsay’s books. I can’t get enough of them!
I do not leave many 5star reviews, but this book definitely deserves it. Very fast paced, well written story.
This is what I like/dislike about this book (and all other books of this series, though not all deserve my 5star rating, but none is below 4stars):
pros
– characters: the protagonists are heroes in their own ways, but they are not …
Unusual story that I really enjoyed. The characters were multidimensional.
It’s rare to find a really original great book these days, but this book truly is wonderful! I save the 5 star rating for books like this that stand out as unique, engaging, and non-put-downable! :0) I have stayed up until the wee hours reading just one more chapter of this and other books in the series. I love the plot, characters, and …
This is a marvelous series — funny and clever, exciting and fast-paced. I love all this author’s work.
As usual, Lindsay Buroker creates an enchanting world which leaves you asking for more. The plot is twisting and turning, leaving you on edge, the characters are multi-layered and above all – Buroker’s sense of humor is ever-so-present.
