In the beginning, there was darkness. Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave. But fate had something else in mind.Till darkness dies. From the barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a … to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a fairy who began with nothing, became the Emperor of Evening Stars.
This is a roughly 200 page novella told from Desmond Flynn’s perspective.

I really enjoyed getting Des’s POV and his back story.
This novella didn’t disappoint! Such a great series and I have no idea what I’m gonna read now LOL!
This was such a good book. To experience what his mother had to go through and what his life was like as a child, how he was treated by others was hard to read but at the same time his mom’s love for him was everything. I cannot believe that he found out that he would have a human mate so many years before he ever found Callie, that was a nice surprise I was not expecting. I especially love how at first he was like no way would I ever have a human mate and now we know how much he truly loves her. I was surprised to find out what he did to two men in Callie’s life that were horrible people and she never knew. With this story you could tell how much Des struggled with his fairy nature versus him knowing what was right and wrong, he wanted to be with Callie so badly but he knew she was too young but he just liked being around her until that fateful night. It was so heartbreaking reading how Des tried to get back to Callie all of those years. It was gut wrenching to experience what Des went through when Callie went missing and exciting at the same time to see how he came to her rescue. I feel that this book really added alot to the series and made me love this character even more.
4.5
‘The Emperor of Evening Stars’ is a novella based on Des’ POV that should be read between book two ‘A Strange Hymn’ and book three ‘Dark Harmony’.
From a lanky and poor kid to the powerful Night King, Desmond has had a tough life with many secrets and battles. Now it’s time to get inside the Bargainer’s head and see the life he has been leading before and after Callie came into.
I knew it was going to be great to get inside Des’ head, he has fascinated me from the very beginning. But I had absolutely no idea what to expect and I was not disappointed. The only thing I have to say that I was upset about was that it wasn’t long enough, I’m not ready to leave the dark, mysterious and interesting mind that is Des.
I can honestly say that this book has been the most intriguing and highlight of this series. I’ve been enjoying this series but am a little annoyed with Callie’s character as she is a bit of a self sabotage but being able to see the man behind the facade that Des shows everyone has been an enjoyable read.
Getting inside Des’ head was so great. We finally get to see how Des became King and then we get to see some pivotal moments between him and Callie. I’m a just flying through this series and I loved this novella.
Beginning 270 years ago this is the story of Desmond Flynn and his origins.
From the caves of Arestys to Barbos The City Of Thieves after his mother’s murder.
His time spent amongst the brotherhood The Angels Of Small Death.
With a Prophecy and a hidden destiny to fulfil fate’s path leads him along with his close friend Malaki to join the Night Kings military, a means to an end and a way to get closer to his father so he can attempt to take him out and finally achieve vengeance for his mother’s senseless death.
These are the events and experiences that have forged Desmond into the fairy and king he is today.
This was a fascinating insight into Desmond’s true character and what makes him tick and after reading this, I feel like I know him intimately.
His humble origins and life lessons giving him a slice of humanity that you don’t usually get in a fairy.
Desmond’s compassion towards humans was there to witness in his early life but I was very surprised with his initial inbred prejudices when it came to him learning his mate to be was a human and then so pleased to see him evolve from this limited and bias mindset and embrace his forthcoming destiny.
Loved experiencing the bond from Desmond’s side and learning just what goes on in our Bargainers head.
It really gave me a whole new insight into just how much he loves and cherishes his human/siren mate.
It was beautiful just watching him take care of her just for the want of her comfort and happiness.
I think I now love Desmond even more if that’s possible, and the desperation and panic he felt after her final wish and he realised the price it had exacted hurt my heart.
Loved experiencing this all from Desmond’s POV and I am looking forward to getting stuck into the final book in this brilliant series.

Of all the books I’ve read before, I have never had such a fiery want for a hero being a real man. Desmond is everything! EVERYTHING!
I like this novella, which provides the backstory of the Bargainer (aka Desmond). Within these pages, the author provides a deeper glimpse of the soul of the fae king, and I came away liking him even more. I understood him better, recognized just how much he loves Callie and witnessed the great lengths he has gone through to get to this point.
Great little book about the character Desmond Flynn and how he came to be!!!
