When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of “rogue” wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd’s last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn’t take them.In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as … family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.
The Elephant Whisperer is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad account of Anthony’s experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, it is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

Great story about one man’s relations with the herd of elephants he saved. I enjoyed his story.
The Elephant Whisperer is a fascinating story about the relationship between a man and a herd of elephants. He puts himself in harms way in order to build trust, and he learns how to relate to these majestic creatures, and they learn a lot from him as well. His conservation philosophy and his approach make you want to go on safari at a Thula Thula where you know they are doing everything possible to preserve the natural way of life for all of the wild creatures in Africa.
This wonderful and true story lasted in my thoughts for months, even years, after I read it. I highly recommend it, especially for those who recognize the importance of protecting our endangered species and habitats.
It’s fascinating to see how wildlife is managed behind the scenes at safari lodges. I don’t think he can communicate with elephants as well as he claims, but he does seem to have developed some relationship with them. I loved it.
This book discusses the challenges and rewards of operating a wild game ranch in Africa.
Thrilling to see such devotion to preserve animals being crowded out of existence.
Elephants have long been my favorite animal, and I don’t know why. This book, to me was all the things that have been marked above. I just love elephants.
Well written and presented
Neat story about man & his wife who save elephants about to be destroyed. Inspirational!
Loved this real-life story set in an animal preserve in Africa. If you love elephants, this is a wonderful book about their personalities, relationships with other elephants and humans and their actions/reactions.
I absolutely love this book. I learned so much about elephants. They are highly intelligent, loving giants. I won’t spoil it by saying more. The author is an amazing man too. It’s a very well written book. I bought the book for my granddaughter and she agrees with me. You won’t regret buying it!
This was one of the most beautiful books I’ve read in years. The author pulls you into his life of being charmed by, and learning a lot about, a group of these beautiful creatures
This was a delightful book that transports you to the world of South Africa and a life that most of us only live vicariously. I only allowed myself to read small portions every day so as to savor it for a longer time. Excellent read in my opinion.
outstanding!!!!!!!
This is a truly wonderful true account of a naturalist dedicated to saving the wild animals of Africa.
I loved this. It was interesting to follow the progress of the elephants and how they came to trust. I learned they are so much smarter than most of us realize. I didn’t want the book to end.
I very much enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it.
Fascinating story of commitment to an ideal. Incredibly inspiring patience as the narrator attempts, fails many times, and still continues until he wins the trust of the elephants he so desperately wants to save. Not a straightforward path to his goal, but beset with challenges, set backs. Overcoming those with the help of so many selfless, dedicated people keeps the story realistic and worth reading.
I loved this book. The author did a great job of keeping the reader engaged all the way through. I learned a lot about the African wildlife. I would definitely recommend The Elephant Whisperer, in fact I already have.
Loved this book. The author recounts his experiences as the owner of the Thula Thula wildlife game reserve with such empathy for the animals it instantly causes you to love both his animals and him for working so hard to maintain the reserve.
