I highly recommend this book!
It was two books in one. The first was the action part, and the second part was the government trying to control what was released to the public. This is realistic and happens more than what anyone thinks.
Robert Dugoni is flexing his literary muscles of late, branching out from his legal thrillers and police procedurals to literary fiction (Sam Hell) and spy thrillers. Except that I actually think The Eighth Sister is a combination of spy thriller and literary fiction. I loved his unlikely (older) protagonist, and the relationship he has with his son. I also really enjoyed the Robert Ludlum/Tom Clancy feel a lot of the book had, albeit with much more character development and depth. Looking forward to the next Charlie Jenkins book.
Robert Dugoni, Author of “The Eighth Sister” has written an intense, captivating, intriguing, chilling and thrilling, suspenseful, action packed, page-turning novel. The Genres for thiovel are Espionage, Mystery, Suspense, Legal and Criminal Thriller. . This novel plays out like a game of chess, or cat and mouse game. There are twists and turns. The time-line for the story is in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events of the story. The author describes has dramatic cast of characters as complex and complicated.
Former CIA Agent Charles Jenkins, is now in his sixties with a young family. He is also working in a security consulting business with some other partners , which is going bankrupt. It seems luck might be with him or not, but a blast from his CIA past, his former boss approaches him and offers him the opportunity to work for the CIA and save some lives and also make some fast cash. Jenkins will have to go to Russia, and locate some people. This is dangerous, and if his mission goes off, the CIA will disavow any knowledge of him or his activity. Now this has become a game of life and death.
It seems that Jenkins has some very formidable Russian agents after him. Not only that, if Jenkins makes it home, he has other major problems .I would highly recommend this riveting novel for readers who enjoy suspenseful stories.

I received a copy of this story from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was so thrilled when I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley! I was first introduced to Robert Dugoni with his Tracy Crosswhite series and I was excited to explore his writing with a different character.
I have to say: I enjoyed this book a lot! I love conspiracy theories and procedural storytelling so it was something of a given that I’d like this story. But the layering in of Russia and Russian culture, a behind-the-scenes look at CIA field work, and an older cast of characters made it all the more appealing. Charlie Jenkins is a guy I’d like to chat with!
Robert Dugoni never disappoints with his storytelling. It was intriguing and dynamic and moved at just the right pace for the story he was telling. And while his cast of characters was extensive, they joined in seamlessly with the flow of the narrative. This felt realistic; it felt like an article I could read today.
I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read!
Robert Dugoni is a master storyteller. The Eighth Sister is a nail bitting, thrill of a ride read that is current to today !
Charles Jenkins is a retired CIA agent who happens to be desperate for money, comes out of a long retirement to take a dangerous assignment in Russia.
Things don’t go as plan and the escape is on !!
The pages fly by, you want to know how Charles will manage to escape ; I spent time yelling at him, don’t do that !
Don’t want to give anything away so pick up your copy, clear your calendar and enjoy a great ride.
Please take time to read the author’s notes at the end of the book, it totally enhances the book.
Thanks again to Net Galley and the publisher Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read The Eight Sister !! Can’t wait to get a copy for my bookshelves.
An Espionage and Legal Thrillers in One Fast-Paced Novel
This novel opens with a secretary leaving the Russian White House and arrives home to find two FSB officers in her apartment. She is accused of being one of seven elderly women spies for the US known as the Seven Sisters. Then the story switches to Charles Jenkins, an ex-CIA agent who owns his own company, CJ Security, with one client, who is behind paying him that Charles is in danger of losing his company and his home. He is contacted by his old CIA boss who talked him into working for the Agency again and to go to Russia. He is to contact the FSB and provide some information of spies and specifically on the Seven Sisters. The purpose is to find the identity of the counteragent uncovering these spies. Charles accepts and the story is off and running.
The main storyline is proceed quickly and fairly straight forward as counterespionage on both the US and Russian sides story. There are not many twists or turns, but when the few occur they hit the reader like a truck. After things go south, the storyline turns in to an intriguing cat and mouse story.
Upon returned to the US, Charles does not like what happened and contacts the FBI in hope of finding if he really was reactivated that also would let the CIA know that there was a leak or mole. Quickly, the FBI focused on him and arrested him. The storyline then turns into a legal thriller with David Sloane as the attorney.
I have not read any of the David Sloane series of novels. I understand that Charles was a character in several of them. I did not find this out until after I finished reading this novel. I did not feel that I was missing anything by not having read those novels before reading this one. The B-storyline provided a rich background on all of the main characters and was woven well into the main storyline making the reading of this novel richer and more enjoyable.
As for vulgar language there were not any f-bomb and very little lesser vulgar language. There are not any sex scenes either. There should not be any issues with readers who are sensitive to these two issues.
I really enjoyed reading this novel. Its fast pace right from the start set its hooks into my imagination. I read it late into the night and every chance during the day that I could. This is my major criteria for a high star rating. There were not any loose ends when the novel finished. I rate this novel with five stars and recommend it even if you have not read any of the David Sloane series of novels.
I have received a free kindle version of this novel through NetGalley from Thomas & Mercer with a request for an honest, unbiased review. I wish to thank Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read this novel early.
A truly fascinating read by Robert Dugoni. Former CIA Charles Jenkins is approached by his former station chief to undertake an assignment in Russia to locate the eighth sister. The eighth sister is believed to be killing off the members of a group called the seven sisters who have been secretly spying for the United States. Charles walked away from the CIA decades ago and is married to Alex, with one son and another baby on the way. Needing funds for his security business, Charles agrees to be reactivated knowing that if the mission goes awry that he will be on his own. What he doesn’t expect is to be arrested and charged with treason upon his return to the states. He has been set up. But why? This is a whirlwind ride that captured me from the very beginning as Charles survives the many dangers in Russia to the realization that he must now defend himself against charges that he was spying for Russia. With the help of his lawyer, David Sloane, will he be able to beat the charges or will he be sentenced to prison for the rest of his life? I don’t normally read books that involve Russia and spies, but this is a must read! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Charles Jenkins, ex-CIA agent in his sixties. A hero I can identify with! First book I’ve read by Dugoni. It won’t be the last.
Charles retired CIA living on the San Juan Island with a wife and two small children. Once again pulled in, the last two sisters who had gone undercover in Russia, having no communication from them. Trouble begins when they put him on a kill list, when the mafia son is killed.
The words flow in this good plot. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion from Net Galley and Thomas Mercer. Feb 22 , 2022
I have read all his books, but this is my number one favorite. I read it twice in a few months time.He definitely knows how to keep the story going strong. Loved it.
The true test of a book is if I transfer it to my husband’s kindle. This book has made the mark
Heart pounding suspense and intrigue. Charlie Jenkins is reinstated to go on a CIA Op. He takes the job to help his family’s business. Russia isn’t a friendly place. How will Jenkins get out of this fix and get home before his baby is born? How will he, and David Sloane, prove that there was an Op?
Excellent book, can’t wait to read the next installment…The Last Agent….
This is my second book by Robert Dugoni. The first was The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell, which I loved. So I decided to read The Eighth Sister. Wow what a difference! I was totally engrossed especially during the escape from Russia.
This was a different kind of suspense book for me. I’m not an espionage/overseas setting type of reader; however, being that I’ve read 5 of the Tracy Crosswhite books from Mr. Dugoni, I decided to take a chance.
This had everything a suspense/thriller/mystery/courtroom/ reader could want. Tight spots for the main character, Charles Jenkins, ex-CIA, to get out of; life at home with wife and child; and the thrill of a courtroom drama. Taken all together made a very interesting and entertaining read.
Will I read another Jenkins book? I’m still out on that. BUT, I’m in the process of reading another Dugoni book called The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell and have really enjoyed it. (Review will be posted later). Also looking forward to the next Tracy Crosswhite book A Steep Price in my TBR stack.
Thanks for such great writing to help pass the time during this pandemic, Mr. Dugoni.
Excellent writer, excellent espionage story. The sequel is also great.
I read this book when it was recommended by a dear friend and she was right! From the first chapter until the last, it was full of eery surprises, realistic character settings, and suspense which rocked my perception of the international “spy game”. Powerfully provocative and riveting.
Not every twist and turn was unpredictable, but it was an enjoyable read! Nice balance between spy novel and courtroom drama.
An interesting, above average thriller. It took a little suspension of belief in several parts but on the whole was a good read worth the effort.
