My book club community, The Otherworld, just read this book for January’s Book of the month. This was a great read with a fast pace, and some really great characters. My favorite part about this book was the setting, which portrayed Scotland, its history waiting at every corner. I really enjoyed the notion of magical candymaking, something that has not been done before, and the whole whimsical idea of it was really cool. After Aini’s father is kidnapped from his candymaking lab, she goes on a quest to find him, which results in her discovering many more secrets and past history lurking in her family’s heritage. The story was very easy to read with relatable characters, I just wish there was a little bit more connection and romance between Aini and Thane, and I did find the whole story a bit predictable. Overall, a great book.
Good story. Good alternate reality setting. Conflicted characters. Slow pace with near constant tension and sporadic action.
Based on Kindle Unlimited version borrowed on 30 June 2018.
A unique read!
A candymaker’s daughter…
Secrets and revelations…
A revolution…
Danger at every turn…
Will the Seer rise?
Or fail?
A mysterious and suspenseful read that will leave you panting for more. I absolutely love the darkness of the novel – so alluring and seductive.
Love the candy shop, especially the uses for it. Such a great and interesting idea.
Full of darkness, magic, deception, secrets, mystery, a forbidden romance, sixth-senses and a revolution.
Perfect for readers of urban fantasy romances.
Audiobook
Oh. My. Word. I absolutely loved the narrator’s accent – she killed it!
I didn’t know what to expect going into this but I knew I would enjoy it bc I love Alisha’s writing. This was just fantastic!! Never read an alternate history that’s set in modern times.
Aini is very by the book. Plays by the rules. Likes her lists. I relate to her very much!
I love Thane! What hot sexy Scot He’s book smart but also tough and street smart.
His and Aini’s chemistry is awesome.
Myles is such a character. Their comraderie is great. That’s something I think Alisha writes really well! The banter, teasing, goofing off…
Thane is member of the Campbell Clan which is basically a Scottish mob. Drama ensues.
Great for fans of THE CONFECTIONER’S GUILD.
Some Quotes
A little truth turned lies to gold.

“You need all of us,” Myles said. “End of discussion.”
“You sound like me,” Aini mumbled. “I know. So bossy and sensible. Neve,” he said, his voice echoing down the hallway outside her door. “Say something I can turn into a dirty joke. I’m not feeling like myself.”

Aini MacGregor was definitely going to be the death of him.

“What if this is all a big mistake?” she asked quietly. The wind blew over her head and lifted strands of her hair.
He took her fingers in his. “All we can do is our best. Look for the Waymark Wall here. If we don’t find it, look at another spot. When you feel you’ve searched all you can, then decide what to do next.”
A sudden smile rose on her face like a sunrise. “Why, Thane. I think you just made a to- do list.”
He laughed. “Aye. I think I did. You see the effect you have on me, hen?”
Second read through for me. Things I absolutely adore about this series: alternate future, biracial heroine, Scottish slang, and the most powerful thing available is boutique candy. This is all such a fantastic setup for this series and it sucks you in immediately.
Not at all what I expected when opening.
Wonderful story of mystery and intrigue. Unjust government and ancient feuds. Colorful details describing it all. Many wonderful characters. Well worth my reading time.
