A wonderful story. I love Morley and June. They are such wonderful people. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading The Duke’s Second Chance first to get the whole story. The Standish sisters are so much fun. I can’t wait to read their stories. This was such a fun story to read with a lot of different emotions. I kind of wish there had been an epilogue, but that would probably ruin the series, so I will have to wait for the next book to see how things turned out.
I liked this book a lot. I liked it more then the first one in the series. I thought it was very well developed. I loved the relationship between June and Marlow. There were many times where you wanted to tell them to just tell each other how they felt. I loved how Gerald set everything up to try and help his friend be happy. I thought the characters were well developed and that we could see more of who the sisters will be in the next books.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, The Duke’s Second Chance, and I loved this one just as much! During a card game, Lord Morley wins a a crumbling estate from his best friend, the Duke of Granbury, but the estate comes with the responsibility of five sisters, including the eldest sister June that Morley met previously and can’t forget. I loved that the story is told from two points of view though I was at times frustrated by June because she was so stubborn. However, I can understand how defensive she must be feeling responsible for her four sisters. I love how patient Morley is and the romance is so sweet and sigh worthy.
I loved seeing familiar faces from the first book but you don’t necessarily need to read it to enjoy this one. I am intrigued by the other sisters and can’t wait to read their stories in upcoming books!
I received an advance copy of this book but am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed this book. It is the second book in the sisters of Sussex series, that could be read as a standalone. The character development was great, if everyone could have a Lord Morley in their lives – sigh. Jane was more of a mother hen, but still is deserving of a love match. I think the plot of the story is good and interesting. This book gave some good insight into her sisters, which I assume the following books will be about. I did feel like there could’ve been a few more twists and turns, or obstacles thrown in the way, But it was still a good story and I am excited to read the next book in the series. It is a clean wholesome regency romance.
A Delightful Happily Ever After!
My goodness! Morley certainly won a handful, very well planned out by the Duke of course.
I loved reading this story.
I did not like Smallwood, Annabelle, or Lady Morley even a little bit. I knew they were up to something. I liked seeing how it all played out. June is a wonderful, selfless woman. She deserves happiness. I don’t normally give spoilers but I think my headline does.
Romance, schemes, gowns, picnics, a ball, a castle, and sisterly love are all part of this delightful, must-read story.
The next book in the Lords for the Sisters of Sussex series. Lord Morley wins an estate in a game of cards with his best friend, the Duke of Granbury. The estate also comes with the responsibility of the five Standish sisters who are of royal blood but because of the rules of heredity they’ve been living in a drafty cottage and relying on the kindness of others for several years. Morley wonders what Gerald was thinking when his let him win that card game?
Poor Lord Morley. He seemed surprised by his feelings for the oldest sister, June, who also seemed surprised by her feelings towards Morley. I completely understood Morley’s dilemma–how would June feel if he admitted his feelings towards her? Would she think they were true or just Morley feeling he needed to care for her and her sisters? June was truly a selfless sister, putting aside thoughts of herself to care for her sisters and make sure they had matches to decent, honorable men. But she could be a tad stubborn.
I loved reading about the castle renovations and the discovery made during them. I also loved the excitement the sisters felt about getting new ball gowns and attending the ball. It had been so long since they’d had anything brand new and gotten to go anywhere. I liked how appreciative they were of the gowns they received from the duchesses. The sisters could’ve been quite bitter about their circumstances but they weren’t.
This is a lovely Regency read and I’m glad Morley gets a happy ending like his best friend Gerald. This is part of a series, but each book can standalone, although it’s fun to see the recurring characters.
Sweet, clean regency romance.
I hoped to love this one as much as a the first in the series but book 1 still holds my heart. Still, this is a nice read. There were parts of the book that felt odd since I’m used to the Ton looking down their noses at those that have fallen in fortune and these sisters are befriended by women who didn’t have to show any attention at all. However, their attentions are kind of a competition to see who can be the most benevolent. The sisters are very gracious and thankful to these ladies for sharing their last years fashions but it kind of bothered me. June didn’t want to be beholden to Morley but she was willing to be toward these great ladies. It felt a bit inconsistent. Do we just love pretty dresses so much that it can be overlooked? Lady Annebelle and Smallwood as well as Lady Morley were all more what I expect from the Ton. Actually I kept anticipating that Smallwood would be much worse. I was waiting for him to do something truly evil. He wasn’t as bad as I thought he would be.
I liked Morley but thought him rather naive in asking a woman who keeps throwing herself at him to assist him in caring for the sisters. Does he not see a disaster coming straight at him? But he is a good man.
And June is a good and caring sister. She is strong willed and perhaps a little uncertain in love. But I liked her. And all the sisters. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
No sex, language or violence
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Romance – Sweet and Clean
Language – None
Violence – None
Recommendation – High
Series – Book 2 (There is a prequel novella to this series also)
I loved this book! I was just going to start it at bedtime, and ended up staying up reading the entire book because I could not put it down. It’s THAT good!
I have to admit, my favorite character is our Hero, Lord Morley. He is so good and so kind, everything you expect our leading man to be. The way he seems to adopt all of the girls and comes to look upon each one as a sister, with of course the exception of June. She takes up a special place in his heart.
I do want to go back now and read the prequel novella that sets this series up, as I have not read it yet. However, this definitely can be read as a stand-alone. I just want to read his story because he and Amelia are fantastic!
*****I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. It in no way influenced my opinion of this book.****
Super cute book with a clean regency romance. It will be fun to read each of the sisters’ stories as this series continues! June is a great heroine because she is strong but caring. Morley is a great hero because he is noble but timid in love.
I loved The Earl’s Winning Wager by Jen Geigle Johnson! The characters were wonderful. I enjoyed seeing so many characters from the previous book in the series and I look forward to seeing them in the following books. There was so much personality and depth to each character, so much caring and goodness, with a bit of opposition. Just a really great and fun, sweet, clean love story. And the ending was perfect. Except that it ended and I didn’t want it to end. But that’s the great thing about a series—you get to read more about them next time! I definitely recommend it.
This is a well written book that was a joy to read. It’s a sweet clean regency romance that will keep you turning the pages. The author makes the story come to life with her words. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I received an ARC copy of this book and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. It is the second book in the sisters of Sussex series, that could be read as a standalone. The Earl’s Winning Wager is book two in the Lord’s for the Sisters of Sussex series by Jen Geigle Johnson. I enjoyed this book. When Lord Morley wins an old castle in a card game, he discovers that he also wins a family of five beautiful women. What happens when he begins to fall in love with one of them? I think Johnson tells a sweet love story. There were a few slow spots but on the whole a nice romance.
This is a story almost as old as time. Does she love me? Does he love me? Is it just my imagination? False hope? The difference in this book is Ms Johnson’s delivery. An easygoing cadence with some anticipation at the results. And when all is said and done you are left with a smile on your face at the wonderful HEA. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed this story about Morley and June. It is about 5 sisters who have been left destitute but are distant relatives to royalty. Because of their connections they have many people who help and care for them. But until the Duke of Granbury takes over their estate their was really no hope they would ever have a chance to marry. The Duke knows his cousin and best friend Morley had an interest in the oldest sister when they first met (which happened in book one) so he purposely loses the estate to Morley in a card game. His hopes is to be a match maker in some way for Morley and June. But the results of the wager didn’t have the immediate desired affects that the Duke would have desired. This story is about how June and Morley and the other sisters bond and become like family and find love that might have never come to either of them otherwise.
This is the second book in the series and I really enjoyed it. It was in some ways, quite fast paced and the character development is different to how the author usually writes, however, we were introduced to all of the characters in the first book, so I definitely recommend reading that before this one if you can, since it helps to build on the characters personalities.
I really enjoyed Lord Morley’s character in the first story so I was looking forward to reading this one. There is a bit of subterfuge in this story to keep things interesting and we get a better glimpse as some of the other sisters characters/personalities. I’m really intrigued with Charity’s character and am looking forward to her story in particular. For some reason, I identify with her the most so that adds to the intrigue.
This is a clean, wholesome read with a feel good ending. We also get to meet the Duke and Duchess from the first story again throughout this one so again, I definitely recommend reading “The Duke’s Second Chance” first.
I received an ARC of this book from the author, with no obligation to leave a review.
The Duke of Granbury gifts his best friend Lord Morley an old estate that includes a set of sisters as an unusual matchmaking attempt.
Miss Standish is the oldest and she acts like a mother figure to her younger sisters and feels like she needs to take care of them.
I like that each sister’s personality is so unique. Grace is an adorable little sister who chatters away, and I can’t wait for Charity’s story. She really stands out and has some interesting opinions.
This was a lighthearted and fun book that helps you take your mind off of things going on in the real world.
“Sometimes when I focus on all we have lost, I forget all we have gained.”
There are a few minor structural things but none to keep me from continuing on and enjoying the Standish Sisters and Nicholas Morley. I read it on KU.
Such a delightful story and satisfying read. With enchanting characters and a quick trip to the Regency Era it will be sure to entertain you and leave you breathless.
The Earl’s Winning Wager continues the delightful Regency saga of the sisters of Sussex—June, Charity, Lucy, Kate, and Grace Standish. This book works well as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading The Duke’s Second Chance first to better connect with the story and characters. Although this is June and Morley’s story, we also learn more about the personalities, hopes, and dreams of the other sisters. With a steadily flowing plot; wonderful characterization; lovely Regency settings; and the introduction of a family mystery involving jewels and William the Conqueror, this book is a cleverly written, entertaining read. I look forward to reading the other books in the Lords for the Sisters of Sussex series. I recommend this light, easy-to-read book and the series especially for lovers of Regency romance.
