A man tortured by his past doesn’t think he deserves love. A young lady grabs his attention and doesn’t let go. Maybe she is the answer to help him get over his guilt and nightmares, or will he push her away. A little longer than I think it needed to be, because the hero couldn’t get his act together sooner. I did enjoy the plotline.
Paulett Golden is a new-to-me author and the blurb to this story pulled me in. The chapters and the writing however, kept me intrigued and turning the pages
Lizbeth escapes the ballroom to hide in a parlour to avoid her matchmaking aunt. There she meets and is intrigued by an unknown, rakish, yet intelligent man. A man that challenges her and is willing to debate with her.
Happy in her independence, and spinsterhood, she is not looking for a husband. She is looking for freedom. But, this unknown man has her wondering what marriage could be between equals.
Roddam is a recluse by choice. He believes his life is too dark for friendship or love. But, after a tete-a-tete with a young woman, Roddam is intrigued and wants to spend more time with her. Thus, he sets out to do so. He knows she wants nothing from him and sets out to try and make her his lover.
In each other, however, they find a kindred soul. Someone who is looking for escape and to be free of other people’s demands and judgements.
Is it possible for them to become more than just friends?
I was enveloped in this world. it swallowed me whole.
There are small twists and turns in this story that will keep your attention. For me, however, the characters were what kept my undivided attention.
I loved seeing how Liz breaks down Roddam’s walls. He does not trust easily and she simply decimates any barriers between them. I could feel Roddam fall under Liz’s spell. Enchantress indeed!
The connection/spark between these two characters when they first meet is instantaneous. You can feel the pull between them and it leaves you wanting more.
As for Roddam, he is broody and untrustworthy but is so very full of caring and love.
The passion and friendship between Roddam and Liz are beautifully crafted. They will have you smitten.
As for the aunt? My god! I LOVED HER! What a shock that woman is!
I loved this book. Fell in love with its characters and was swept away to another place, another time. I was enchanted throughout.
I am more than eager to read the remaining books in this series.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Book one in An Enchantress Novel series a well written story that kept me turning pages. This is only the second book by this Author that I have read, I found the story to have a great storyline and the story flowed smoothly from page to page. Lizbeth Trethow and her husband Sebastian Lancaster the Earl of Roddam’s story. Sebastian had so much from his past that he had to get over, especially the things his Father accused him of doing as a child. It will take all of Lizabeth’s strength, belief in her husband, and her love for him to find the answers she needs for him. What a first book for this Author. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
We see Sebastian with his family and Lizbeth with her family. When they meet it is great minds think alike and they are both taken with each other. They both claim that they don’t want to get married. They both have their own issues. He has secrets. You have to read to find out if it all works out.
The whole time I was reading it I was rooting for Lizbeth and Sebastian to get married and have good life. I enjoyed the story. It was nice to have a book that does not stop when they get married it actually went longer.

I thought this book was a great start to the series but it would be fine as a stand alone as well. The characters were well developed and drew me into their story. I absolutely loved Aunt Hazel and hope that she is a staple in the series!! I felt that there were a few places in the book that were a little slow but over the book read well. I would definitely recommend this book. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
In this historical romance, an unlikely couple finds a connection at soul-level, that makes it difficult for them to negate their true feelings. Despite having strong ideas against marriage, Sebastian and Lizbeth discover that becoming friends leads the way to love. However, there are so many obstacles to overcome that at times one despairs for the couple. I do like Sebastian, in spite of his dark character, and Lizbeth is the epitome of a pearl of great price as she reaches in to dig out his past and discover his secrets. The book is generally well written and emotive, however, I did find some of the passages a little slow moving especially those dwelling on the couple’s inner turmoil. I found some of the ancillary characters unpleasant and shallow and in view of the fact that this book is the first in a series, I truly hope they will redeem themselves in the future. This romance is a standalone and comes to a happy and satisfactory conclusion. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review
Lizabeth is fiercely independent and has sworn to never marry. At the age of twenty five she would rather be a spinster than give up her freedom.
Sebastian has very little use for society and even less use for the empty headed young ladies he meets in society.
While attending a ball Lizabeth sneaks into the library to read while trying to dodge her matchmaking Aunt. The library is a popular place because Sebastian has already settled himself in front of the fire to read. A conversation ensues and they find they have a lot in common. Will Lizabeth be able to bring Sebastian out of his tortured past and will he reveal his deepest secrets to her? I liked this story and I’m sure you will too.

The two very charming and compelling main characters in Paullett Golden’s debut novel have nothing keeping them apart but themselves. Each of them has very good reasons for avoiding love and marriage but they are also lonely and want more from life. Their journey to find their HEA is a lovely one where they have to learn to trust each other and open themselves to love. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and getting to know all of the characters. Each character was fully developed, robust and very relatable. I just knew I’d love aunt Hazel if I met her, she is so funny and caring, but I didn’t care for Charlotte or Drake. However, I understand there is more to Drake than meets the eye, so we’ll find him and maybe Charlotte redeemed in the next book – where they are the main characters. This book is well-plotted and well-delivered – an all-in-all excellent first book.
Lizbeth Trethow and Sebastian Lancaster, Earl of Roddam first meet when each steals away from a crowded ballroom looking for a moment of peace and solitude. Each is intrigued by the other, but since neither is looking for marriage, they know that this will be their only interaction. Neither of them could stop thinking of the other and when Sebastian’s cousin, Drake, Duke of Annick, decides to pursue Lizbeth or Charlotte for his bride, Lizbeth and Sebastian are thrown together more and more.
Lizbeth is a fixer, a healer of souls. She and her mother were very close and spent every day together frolicking on the beach, romping through the fields and delivering food to the workers at her father’s mine. When Lizbeth was seven years old, her mother died in childbirth and her whole world changed. Her happy, loving father withdrew into himself for years after his wife died and Lizbeth basically had the care of her father, the house and her sibling on her small shoulders. Now, she’s treated as a partner by her father and values her independence. She doesn’t have anything against marriage specifically, but she knows there isn’t a man out there who will treat her as an equal once they are married.
Sebastian had a horrible childhood with an abusive, mad father. Sebastian’s mother was sweet and loving to Sebastian, but she died when he was seven and from that point on he was abused both physically and mentally by his father. Those physical and mental scars run very, very deep. He feels unworthy and carries a huge load of guilt with him and he couldn’t possibly tie some poor woman to him for life. Besides, he has absolutely no idea how to love somebody, he’s never seen love and certainly hasn’t felt it. Sebastian is very, very, very slow to trust and very quick to see betrayal whether it is there or not.
Lizabeth is the balm to Sebastian’s wounds, but it comes at a price – he has to be honest with her and tell her all of his secrets. But, if he does, he knows he’ll lose her forever. Will he be able to conquer his demons and trust Lizabeth?

“I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.”
Really great story, romantic, entertaining and adventurous. Characters are very engaging and the story although focused on Lizbeth, it also deals her somewhat conceited sister and her love of society expectations versus Lizbeth determination to not marry without love. Sebastian is a wounded lonesome soul with a compassionate heart. She entices him and challenges him to open his heart to love as they deal with preconceived notions and skeletons.
