The Dying Hour introduces Jason Wade, a rookie crime reporter with The Seattle Mirror, a loner who grew up in the shadow of a brewery in one of the city’s blue-collar neighborhoods. At The Seattle Mirror, he is competing for the single full-time job being offered through the paper’s intense intern program. But unlike the program’s other young reporters, who attended big name schools and worked at … at other big metro dailies, Wade put himself through community college, and lacked the same experience.
Wade struggles with his haunting past as he pursues the story of Karen Harding, a college student whose car was found abandoned on a lonely stretch of highway in the Pacific Northwest. How could this beloved young woman with the altruistic nature simply vanish?
Wade battles mounting odds and cut-throat competition to unearth the truth behind Karen Harding’s disturbing case. Her disappearance is a story he cannot give up, never realizing the toll it could exact from him. The Dying Hour is a bone-chilling, mesmerizing page-turner that introduces readers to an all-too-human young hero who journeys into the darkest regions of the human heart to confront a nightmare.
The International Thriller Writers (ITW), selected The Dying Hour as a finalist for a Thriller Award for Best Paperback Original, 2006.

Not as good as his other books….but I still liked it
Another great by Rick Mofina! In this story, Jason Wade is a rookie intern reporter vying for a job at the Seattle Mirror. Since his shift is night crime reporter, his job is to sit by the police scanners and listen for a possible story. He latches on to an abandoned vehicle the police have discovered along a lonely stretch of highway after a bad storm. What ensues is a gruesome tale of a religious fanatical serial killer and Jason’s determination to find the missing driver.
This is a great book you have to keep on reading it once you start.
Anything by Mofina is worth the cost read.
Anything by Mofina is exceptional!!!
I liked the story and the character Jason Wade. I thought the descriptions of the torture were a bit too much. Really was disappointed in that. Otherwise good book.
Good read, kept me entertained for hours
It keeps you guessing right until the end!
I had to revise my review, to state that The Dying Hour grew more intense and exciting with every page. Somehow, Rick Mofina balanced his protagonist’s personal life, misgivings, and strivings, with an incredibly taut, complex thriller which cascaded then coalesced into a memorable finale. And I lost some sleep! But have become a confirmed fan. Thank you!
Suspenseful even after you figure out who dunnit!
This book kept me on the edge of my seat. It was difficult to put down
So real. Made my heart race.
Good pace
Held my interest
Thought this serial killer novel approached the mystery through the eyes of a junior reporter. A different way to get into the story. Unique.
This book kept you turning pages and anxious for the end. The book was a little gory in detail for my taste but was part of the story. Was hard to acknowledge that there could be such evil.
The book had a complicated plot, as have all of Modina’s books I have read. It was hard to put it down.
Hold your interest and keeps you reading to see what is happening next.
Hooked by the first chapter, the world had to stop until I had read every word. What a wonderfully haunting, chilling story.
Found this book to be a page turner!
