Can there be any greater challenge to London’s Ambitious Mamas than an unmarried duke?—Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1813By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend’s sister—the lovely and almost-on-the-shelf—Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth—it’s all an elaborate ruse to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as … mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable.
But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it’s hard to remember that their courtship is a sham. Maybe it’s his devilish smile, certainly it’s the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her . . . but somehow Daphne is falling for the dashing duke . . . for real! And now she must do the impossible and convince the handsome rogue that their clever little scheme deserves a slight alteration, and that nothing makes quite as much sense as falling in love.

The Bridgerton series is one of my all time favorites!!! The characters are very human and have depth and individual detail. I always find myself wishing I was one of the Bridgerton siblings. Was great to re-read an “old” and dear friend, and am re-reading the entire series.
I loved this book start to finish. Im not going to lie i saw the show first, but i enjoyed the witty banter in the book more. Its an easy to read, cute and sometine steamy love story.
P.s. thanks for the second epilogue
I feel a little uncomfortable writing this review. Why? Well, I always shy away from reading historical romances and I chose to read The Duke and I knowing this. BUT, reading tastes change – I know mine certainly has over the years, and I couldn’t not read this having enjoyed the television adaptation so much.
I did enjoy this story, don’t get me …
Revisiting the whole series after more than a decade and a half and it’s just as good. The show is stupendous!
I’m in love. truly, madly, deeply in love with this books.
So I fell in the Bridgerton rabbit hole. I kept hearing about the show and I succumbed to curiosity and watched with my mom. Yes I got her obsessed too. So naturally I got myself the books.
First I have to say that yes the books are not exactly like the series and even though the series …
Book 7 towards my goal of 240! 5/5 stars for this Regency romance! I haven’t read a ton of these, and you know I had to see what all the hype was about! Absolutely loved it! Loved the main characters! Can’t wait to see more from the Bridgerton world! Can’t recommend this enough!
If you are like me, you may have recently binge-watched the magical Bridgerton series on Netflix {sigh}. After watching this excellent series, I decided I had to try the books. Now I have been a long-time reader of contemporary romance and romantic suspense, but Regency romance has never been my forte. I started reading The Duke and I with …
An easy read, quick and light.
Let me preface this with: I do not usually read regency or period romances. I’m a strictly contemporary gal, and this might be why I had trouble with this.
The first half, I was enjoying it. Sure, there was misogyny, but it was dealt with well since that was the time for it. Quinn did a brilliant job balancing a strong heroine and the time …
So I read this quite a while ago but decided to reread due to the new Netflix series starting, I do remember I originally enjoyed it so was looking forward to rehashing it.
I cut my teeth back in the day on historical romance and it is a genre that brings me fond memories and I don’t read it nearly enough as I should considering how much I used to …
This has been one of my favorite books for many years. I am glad to see it come back around. I love the story of Daphne and Simon.
Loved this book as it was an introduction to the Bridgerton family. Loved the whole series.
How could you sell the Bridgertons to Netflix?! Please, please don’t do anymore damage by selling others!
I might be the only romance author who hadn’t read The Bridgertons! With the Netflix series coming up soon, I needed to catch up. I’m so glad I did! What lovely characters, engaging dialogue, and swoonworthy romance. Absolutely worth the hype! I just finished Book 2. Only 7 to go! Highly recommend.
So I got the gist on what was going to happen before reading this. After hearing so many people rave about it, I HAD to start it eventually and dismiss the fear of getting my hopes up with the hype. Needless to say I loved it! Oh man the Bridgertons are hilarious and I laughed especially at the duel scene. Anthony is such an overbearing older …
This! This book is proof that participating in reading challenges is a wondrous thing. I needed a historical romance off my shelf that met the criteria for a #Romance-opoly Challenge space and this one fit the bill. I’ve been meaning to read this author and this series for eons (you’ve never said that before, right?) So, finally, here we are. Me …
I picked up this book because 1) I wanted something easy and breezy to read after trudging through The Most Fun We Ever Had 2) This series apparently widely beloved and has legions of fans and 3) Netflix are adapting it and Julie Andrews is involved so that’s me sold. The plot was a bit ridiculous (which to be fair I expected and was braced for) …
I’m a recent fan of Julia Quinn having read pretty much everyone else before ‘discovering’ her Bridgertons. Witty, engaging, warm, sweet, and utterly delightful. Halfway through THE DUKE AND I I bought the rest of the series. Fantastic characters and some of the best dialogue I’ve ever read.
To all of society it appears Simon Basset, the new Duke of Hastings, is thoroughly enamored of Miss Daphne Bridgerton and about to propose. But this is all a ruse between the two of them to keep Simon from being hounded by the matchmaking mamas of the ton and to catalyze other men into seeing Daphne as more than just everyone’s friend.
The more …
A great series
